Pierre Alechinsky The Moon, 1969
The workplace environment of the hospital is structured hierarchically. it is upper management that acts disrespectfully toward their employee by deliberately disregarding the structure they use to run their hospital.
The hierarchical structure in these environments is to create a chain of command. The higher the individual is in the chain, the more responsibilities and liability they gain.
Robby in Season 1 is considered to be the chief of the department; by Season 2, Robby is indicated to have received an official title as chair (S2e8). Robby is in two of the highest positions on the department floor. His position is above everyone else in the structured working hierarchy. Everything then should go through him, as he would be the one who directly coordinates with upper management.
In S2E7-E8, it makes sense to discuss with Al-Hashimi as she has training in the area, but Norris intentionally removes Robby from his hierarchical roles in the department.
Upon arrival, Norris calls Robby a playcating, almost mockingly kind, nickname to ease into conversation ("Rockstar"). Robby asks if it's something he needs to know before they announce it to everyone. Norris replies "no".
Not only did upper management fail to forewarn the ED so they could get everything in order, thus supporting everyone in that department and the patients, but when asked why it wasn't also discussed with Robby, who is directly in charge of the floor, Norris replies that he consulted with Al-Hashimi, his "fellow attending".
Norris intentionally removes Robby from two higher up positions he holds, verbally to his face and in front of the ED that has been called together. It also places Al-Hashimi in an awkward position, as she is used to disrespect a fellow employee.
By far, the most basic example of poor leadership and unprofessionalism we see through both seasons. It is one of the most directly disrespectful things they do to an employee.
And yet people will still hate Robby for acting like he owns the E.R. and for calling his E.R. โhis E.R.โ
I think the issue is people who get mad at him when he says "his E.R" are people just...mad at him and that he is in a position of authority.
Whether you agree with the job structure, or with him holding the highest positions or if you think he's right or wrong doesn't really matter. It...just is.
But I dunno about anyone else but it is not uncommon in care fields refer to their work with possession. "My Work" "My Class" "My School" "My practice" etc.
For Robby his identity is so tied in to the ED and that is the reality of how he sees himself, but also that is the reality of being the consistent leadership of the department for five years and it is constantly reaffirmed time and time again that he is apart of it as much as it is apart of him.
Is it healthy? no. But worth being mad over? also no.
god. shinzo abe got his shit wrecked by a goddamn doohickey but the lethal gunshot wound capital of the world cant aim for shit. what the fuck is the second amendment even for

What guts me the most is how frantic Robby is to leave the ED, while simultaneously finding every possible reason to stay for just a little while longer.
Itโs a perfect example of living with suicidalityโdesperately wanting to take action, to enact plans made, and looking for any possible sign to stop you. Itโs being on that edge and knowing that, if you donโt take the leap now, that you might not ever have the willpower again. And that uncertainty is terrifying.
Robby doesnโt want to end his life, he just wants relief. He wants peace. But in order to find that, he needs help. You canโt ever outrun yourself. Thatโs why healing starts from within and branches outward; but itโs up to Robby to take that step to seek help.
And itโs heartbreaking to see that he wonโt seek it out. Itโs heartbreaking to see him poisoning the relationships he fostered with his residents and the rest of the staff. I hope that he seeks the help he needs, and I hope the people who care about him step in when he doesnโt.
Thereโs always a reason to stay, be it grand or mundane. Even if you have to grasp around in the dark, eyes unable or unwilling to see it, itโs there.
Reblog if you wouldn't mind some curious anons
the great thing about the pitt is that it's a show of infinite nuance where every character has moments in the right and in the wrong and no one is irredeemable but also no one is unassailable. the terrible thing about the pitt is that you have to watch people raised by the bad faith no nuance everything-contains-a-moral-failing social media landscape of the 2020s interact with it and enough of that will make you want to join robby and abbot on the roof
I would fold like a lawn chair

love when he randomly gets possessed by pope cody for .1 second
i find it really interesting that santos thinks no one knows where langdon got the drugs from. if i worked in a job where i had relatively easy access to drugs and my coworker was sent to rehab iโd probably be able to make an educated guess about where he got the drugs.
heโs lurking once againโฆ
this shot is actually so insane. its basically a confirmation that Robby is hurting himself or has actively been thinking about it one way or another. Like, now we know that Robby believes that the bike he has doesnโt just symbolise freedom for him but a source of self-inflicted pain and eventual death (if weโre considering everyoneโs opinion on the bike). And I think given next epโs teaser weโll see just how much it actually starts morphing from his sabbatical to his goodbye.
AWWW HE'S SO WORRIED ABOUT HER IM GONNA KILL MYSELF WHITSANTOS SIBLING STOCKS ARE UP!!!
i say once again: i want the season to end with them watching fireworks together

like i love jack abbot guys. but how could no one tell me that pope fucking cody was everything iโve been looking for in the past year. ik this show is going to break me
I hope one day some of yโall can admit that we live in a world where neither Santos or Langdon is 100% correct and lots of things in that situation have gray areas
