lotus pier no war

Nie Mingjue had an absolutely filthy expression on his face. 

“Who pissed in your cereal?” Jiang Cheng asked.

Nie Mingjue waved his hand to a booth, not ten feet away. Lan Wangji was face down on the table. Her brother was upright at an obtuse angle with a very vacant smile on his lips. Before them were two tall glasses filled with ice and something brown. Lan Wangji’s hadn’t had more than a sip taken out of it but Lan Xichen’s was almost empty. 

“I went to the bathroom for five minutes, and Lan Xichen decided to order some iced tea,” Nie Mingjue said, between gritted teeth. 

“They sell iced tea at a bar?” Jiang Cheng said, incredulously. 

“Via Long Island,” Nie Mingjue replied. 

everytime people mention pre-divorce nieyao and don't mention this an angel loses its wings or smth. I mean, I understand why some ppl would like to forget that part. steak too juicy lobster too buttery etc

but like. those are two new sentences and are not necessarily guaranteed by the first.

when i say that, from my point of view, wei wuxian's actions helped lead to the fall of lotus pier, i do not mean that i think he is the primary architect or that i think he deserves to suffer as a result. nor does it mean that i think he should grovel in shame forever, or whatever else.

i simply mean that, from my point of view, there is a cause-and-effect relationship between the events [wei wuxian started shit with wen chao in order to defend luo qingyang] and [wen chao attacks and massacres lotus pier, wei wuxian's sect], and that this relationship is stronger than any of the other cause-and-effect relationships leading up to the fall of lotus pier. i also mean that, had wei wuxian acted differently (ie. if he had done what lan wangji and jin zixuan had done to protect luo qingyang), then the fall of lotus pier probably would not have occurred in the exact way it did.

Unlike the Cloud Recesses, the only damage explicitly mentioned as having been inflicted on the Pier is when Wen Chao demanded that the lotus symbols be removed

In fact, the fact that the Pier seems superficially identical is even used as an added gut-punch. When Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng sneak back into the Pier, we get this scene :

“ The gates of Lotus Pier were tightly shut. Outside, lights glowed brightly. Fragments of moonlight flowed along the crystalline water. Dozens of large lanterns in the shape of nine-petaled lotuses floated by the dock in silence. Everything was the same as before. Yet, it was because of how everything was the same as before that it tormented the heart.”

So why is it rebuilt by the time Wei Wuxian is reborn ? It’s probably meant to be yet another sign of Jiang Cheng’s insecurity. After all, remember what Wang Lingjiao said when she stormed into Lotus Pier ?

“Lotus Pier really is quite nice. It’s so big. It’s just that all of the houses are a bit old.”

And again, when Wei Wuxian revisits the Pier after the Second Siege, we get this scene, that - on top of telling us of Lotus Pier’s new state, is meant to be yet another depiction, I feel, of how the Pier is no longer Wei Wuxian’s home

“The training field was two times larger. Each new building seemed to be taller than the previous, adorned with curving roof decor. It seemed grander than before and had more splendor. But, compared to the Lotus Pier of his memories, it had changed too much.

Wei WuXian felt a sense of loss from deep within. He didn’t know whether the old buildings from the past were blocked behind these impressive new buildings or if they were torn down already.

After all, they were indeed too old”

Now that’s a deliberate echo if I’ve ever seen one. Wang Lingjiao’s catty little jab - especially paired with her subsequent role in the massacre - stung Jiang Cheng so much that he ultimately rebuilt Lotus Pier over it

It also stands as a nice little contrast with the Lan Sect. Because - again, contrary to popular belief, the Lan Sect was not massacred in Wen Xu’s attack. In fact, it kind of seems like it wasn’t an attack at all

From Chapter 52 :

“One of the disciples beside them whispered, “Of course his face isn’t so great. Last month, the Cloud Recesses was burnt down. You didn’t know yet, did you?”

Hearing this, Wei Wuxian jolted, “Burnt down?!”

In the past few days, Jiang Cheng had heard too many of these stories, so he wasn’t as surprised as Wei Wuxian was, “By the Wen Sect’s people?”

The disciple, “You can say that. You can also say… that the Lan Sect itself burnt everything down. The eldest son of the Wen Sect, Wen Xu, went to Gusu. He accused the Lan Sect’s leader of something and forced the Lan Sect’s people to burn down their own residence! It was given pretty names like cleaning up the place so that it’s reborn from the firelight. Most of the Cloud Recesses and its surrounding forest has been burnt down. Just like that, the hundreds of years old paradise had been destroyed. The leader of the Lan Sect was heavily injured. We don’t even know if he’s still alive. Well, well…”

Wei Wuxian, “Is Lan Zhan’s leg related to this?”

The disciple, “Of course. The first place that Wen Xu ordered them to burn down was the Library Pavilion. He declared that he’ll teach anyone who wasn’t willing to do it a lesson. Lan Wangji refused. He was attacked by Wen Xu’s people and they broke one of his legs. It hadn’t even been healed yet, and he was dragged out here again. Who knows what they’re trying to do?!”

It kinds of sounds like Wen Xu pulled something similar to what Wang Lingjiao attempted in Yunmeng - only, you know, successfully. Wen Xu simply walked in the front doors, accused the Lan of wronging them, and demanded that the Lan burn Cloud Recesses themselves… and unlike the Jiang, the Lan did so.

It seems only Lan Wangji spoke out against the burning - getting his leg broken as consequence. As for Qingheng-Jun… we’re never TOLD he fought the Wen or the Wen attacked him. It’s entirely possible the building he was in was just set on fire and he couldn’t escape in time.

That’s probably why the Sects were able to continue to delude themselves regarding the true state of affairs, and are still able to pretend that war wasn’t on the horizon - the Cloud Recesses wasn’t massacred, it was “disciplined”, and by it’s own people, no less

I wonder if that was the plan at Lotus Pier, too - if, like the Recesses, the Pier was simply supposed to be burned - before Wang Lingjiao overstepped by demanding personal, petty, revenge against Wei Wuxian, and then misspoke again, prompting an attack from Madame Yu that blew the entire operation’s cover.

Maybe Wen Zhuliu was lying in wait just below the Cloud Recesses with an army of his own, like the one that took the Pier, waiting for the Lan to make any attempt at resistance.

I wonder if that was the plan for all the Sects, with the Nie being saved for last, because Wen Ruohan knew that the Wen-hating Nie Mingjue would refuse any attempts at “discipline” out of hand, prompting an attack that would set off a war against a much, much, weaker foe, with three of the four sects weakened by “Wen discipline”, and the fourth hopefully massacred

Because sure, Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian were being shamelessly cuddly, but Jin Guangyao—the man who was revealing his supervillain masterplot bit by bit throughout this altercation—spent a portion of that time on his knees in front of Lan Xichen with a tearful, "it's not true baby let me explain," routine—during which you can physically see Lan Xichen yo-yo in real-time between fully buying into jiggy's excuses, then snapping himself out of it with a colorful spectrum of emotions that are definitely in contrast with the Lan family precepts.

What's worse, not only are Jin Guangyao and Lan Xichen essentially two of the biggest celebrities of the cultivation world, but most of the cultivators present actively work for Jin Guangyao. That is their boss ugly crying on the floor trying not to fumble the man they are actively holding as their prisoner.

Can WWX solo stans stay away from Lan wangji ? All they do is spread misinformation regarding lwj and infantilise wwx . No one was starving in burial moulds they were throwing party and having money to buy alcohol.

On the other hand, neither Lan Zhan nor Jiang Cheng were in any position to help because PUBLIC OPINION and POLITICAL POWER had decided that *all* the Wen were irredeemable dogs who deserved no rights. Imagine trying to convince 🍊 and his people to receive trans immigrants in the White House. It was the same level of impossible. Lan Zhan was only a second heir to a sect that had been burned down and was still recovering. By himself he didn't have the money to fully help and nobody with the power to do so would be willing to listen to him. Jiang Cheng's sect was barely a seedling of what it once was, he had zero political power and was still rebuilding their fortune. Strategically, every penny Yunmeng could spare would be dedicated to his sister's wedding because they NEEDED the political protection of the Jin, they were at a disadvantage, and allying with whom the Jin had deemed sworn enemies would, at best, throw the marriage treaty down the drain. At worst, paint a target on the Jiang sect.

On top of that, they were SO FUCKING YOUNG. All of them were barely 20. We are used to stories written by adults that have kids and young people acting with the wisdom of a middle-aged person but at 20 you're still inexperienced and kinda dumb. They had just lived through a war and so much loss, they were not on a position to make sound strategical decisions.

The Wen and Wei Wuxian were sentenced to death the second they stopped aligning with the opinions and wants of the highest power. There was nothing anyone but the Jin themselves could have done to change that.

The Wen are up to slightly different shenanigans and war mongering attempts than in cannon and how the Sunshot campaign gets kicked off is wildly different. Read it, i don’t want to spoil anything but it’s fantastically written like everything else KizuKatana finishes.

The most dangerous thing is to love by KatAnni (E, 113k, WangXian, Golden Core Reveal, Fix-It, Everybody Lives, Angst with a Happy Ending, Hurt/Comfort, Canon Divergence, Hurt!WWX, Found Family, Implied/Referenced Torture, POV Multiple, Implied/Referenced Cannibalism, Panic Attacks, PTSD, Golden Core Transfer, Golden Core Transfer Fix-it, Medical Procedures, Fainting, Major Character Injury, Blood and Injury, WWX Has a New Golden Core, Asexual JC, homophobia doesn’t exist here, Marriage Proposal, Marriage, Wedding Night, Whump) It’s another angsty golden core transfer fix-it fic. With wangxian, ofc. This one takes place entirely during the sunshot campaign and it’s immediate aftermath, it only starts to diverge when WWX, JC, and LWJ meet up again. Jiang Yanli also plays a much more active role in this doc as well.

I've read so many amazing fics in this fandom, and I have so many favorites, but I have one fic that just never leaves my mind. It's been years since I've read it (I'm definitely due for a reread), but I don't think I've ever gone more than a week without thinking about it. I honestly feel like it became a part of me, and it's just permanently in my mind now.

I know there must be a lot of incredible fics that I've missed over the years, and I know this community always has great recommendations, so right now "I'm In The Mood For" WangXian focused fics, any time, canon or not, that just stick in your mind. The world building set the story after this one shot to potentially be amazing. And then it’s the last fic they wrote for this fandom. By the way, it’s exactly what’s on the tin, the best description is the title.
