it physically hurts my brain to watch this video clip and not hear the dramatic music sting from young frankenstein
We should make a list of all the things White people have falsely attributed to Native American mysticism but its actually bullshit
I'll go first
"Two Wolves inside of you" thing: started by a White priest in the 70s iirc and he would switch up which alleged "tribe" said this to him. Also doesn't fit in with any of the spiritual or mythological beliefs of any of the cited tribes. Would use it against ndns who were mad about colonization
Dead man walking Tornado thing: attributed to a Cherokee beliefs about a tornado formation that can sometimes look like walking legs at a certain angle. Also bullshit. I don't know where the "dead man walking" thing came from, but it's definitely not Cherokee
Indian Burial Ground (and specifically Amityville horror): The Amityville house where those murders occurred wasn't haunted. The author who wrote the book "the Amityville horror" (which the films are based off of) kicked off this trope into supersonic mode because she said that this house was on an area where the Shinnecock Natives would abandon their mentally ill and dying. But that was complete bullshit because 1. The Shinnecock didn't treat their mentally ill that way & called her out on that, and 2. That wasn't even on Shinnecock land, that was Montauk land, and they didn't do that either. She just made that up so there was an excuse for why the house was allegedly evil.
"Ice Cannibals can mimick humans to lure them in to kill them": this is purely a Stephen King thing that he made up for Pet Cemetary. Ice Cannibals can't speak and can't mimic anything.
More:
"Bottom of the Totem Pole" expression to refer to someone's low importance: this is a colonizers misunderstanding of how totem poles work, what they're for, and what they mean. It's not insulting or bad for the figure depicted at the bottom of the pole to be at the bottom & it doesn't have less importance than the other figures on the pole. It can depend on the tribe & the specific totem pole, but sometimes it's actually the opposite where the figure at the bottom is deemed the most important because it bears the weight of the rest of the pole.
"Chippewa is an Indian Word that means Orphan": this is some random bullshit from The Addams family that they added to be edgy, but Chippewa is a bastardization of either the Cree exonym for the Ojibwe, Ocipwêw, which means "they stutter", OR it's from the Ojibwe's own word for themselves, O'chepe'wag, which refers to the way they make moccasins.
Fake "Warriors of the Rainbow" Indian prophecy: There's this story that's allegedly an "Ancient Indian prophecy" (usually attributed to either the Hopi or Crees) where everyone on earth will reincarnate with the souls of dead Native Americans and teach everyone how to live with nature or whatever. This was made up by a White Evangelical Christian in 1962 to Evangelize among Native Americans with antisemitic propaganda throughout, and is still pushed by essentially a White Hippie cult and they use this as an excuse as to why it's okay for them to appropriate & steal Native American traditions & cultures.
Spirit Animals... TO AN EXTENT...: what most people THINK of Spirit Animals & how they describe them as a concept is kind of a White amalgamation & misconception of multiple tribes' concepts of Spirit helpers, & what those ACTUALLY are & how they work will differ between tribes, but I won't get into that. Yes it is still appropriation if you say "x is my spirit animal" & no you do not have a Native American Spirit Guide if you are not Native American. & we can tell when Moniyaws don't know what the fuck they're talking about when they try to explain what they think a 'Spirit Animal' is.
I wanted to answer the question in the tags here, but I didnt include the ice cannibal (one proper name I can use without saying the w word out loud, as it's not good in my tribe to say it) as a whole because that IS a genuine spirit that I didn't need to address as a whole, just that the specific thing I mentioned earlier in the post that was made up by Stephen King. There's other general misconceptions about Native Americans that we could sit here all day for, but I wanted to try stay on topic, and the topic is that these are things people who aren't Native genuinely believe are REAL Native American beliefs and from Native spirituality/ideology, but the mentioned ones were all inventions of White people who just make shit up about us. And because most people know almost nothing about Native Americans, that's how most people end up believing & spreading the bullshit.
Back to the question, info regarding the ice cannibal:
It is not antlered, and it does not resemble deer, or an antlered creature. or have any association with deer in any way, as far as I can find this is also the invention of Stephen King.
White people very frequently get this Spirit & the Navajo sk*walker mixed up & will use the terms & mythology interchangeably. They are not the same and are incredibly different.
Not every single Native tribe believes in it, there isn't one thing that every single tribe believes in. It is primarily found in & originated from the beliefs of several Algonquian speaking tribes & Great Lakes tribes. Variations of the Spirit, its name, & legends surrounding it will vary, including whether or not one should say it's name. To those unaware: to be safe & courteous & polite, try not to say it's name in front of people from the tribes I've mentioned and as the user has done in the tags (I appreciate it!).
Yes it is appropriation for White people to use it. Moniyawak never get it right anyway and it's just disrespectful. Our spirituality is not your plaything.
Not native but the ice cannibal being a mimic did NOT come from Stephen King. It came from Algernon Blackwood's novella the W(not saying the rest) which is from the 1910s. Most people know his novella from the abridged version that was included in the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark trilogy.
The W by Algernon Blackwood's Wikipedia page gives a good synopsis of the story.
While the whole deer skull thing may have come from King, the mimicry came from another white man. Most W stories are actually variations on the misinterpretation by Blackwood, including Stephen King's, particularly in the pre-millenium.
I do not mean to over step, and will delete this if it's not wanted.
InB4 people call me white, I'm romani and have various issues of my own with the takes horror has on my own culture (G*psy curses are not real, we don't fuck with anything to do with death OR magic etc).
Ohhh thank you!!

what the fuck
Don’t let anyone silence your voice or steal your power, which is your vote.
Your vote is private. Your vote is your own.
Vote accordingly.
How many "Trump votes" are abusive MAGA husbands or boyfriends who essentially got two votes, while their wife or girlfriend got none?
To be clear: abusive men may think their wife or girlfriend belongs to them, including their vote. But legally, this is voter fraud.
Report these criminals.
Legally, this is voter intimidation.
IF YOU WITNESS OR ARE A VICTIM OF VOTER INTIMIDATION (like what Tom Cox is confessing to in the OP) or other violations of voting rights laws in the US:
Alert a poll worker, if you're at a polling place
Report that shit to the Department of Justice via phone (1-800-253-3931 or 202-307-2767), fax (202-307-3961), email ([email protected]), or their online form.
Contact your state or local elections board.
Your vote is your own. You don't have to tell anyone who you voted for. You can lie about who you voted for. Keep yourself safe out there.
You can also call or text the Election Protection Hotline
English call or text: 866-OUR-VOTE
Spanish call: 866-VE-Y-VOTA
Arabic call: 844-YALLA-US
Asian Languages call: 888-API-VOTE
And if you are in a situation where a spouse or partner is the one doing the voter intimidation to you, like Tom up there is, there are intimate partner violence orgs in your state and many towns who are there to help you. Because what Tom is doing is not okay, and you don't have to live like that.
