i know naim has birds on his walls but guys lets be so fr he and ryan are on their own in the big city trying to build a life together u rlly think he's gonna go to ART SCHOOL?? in this economy?? Aint no fucking way im sorry 2 months out of bandee naim gets a job at the nearest coles and works every shift they'll give him until ryan's apprenticeship paycheck is decent enough for him to consider cutting back and going to uni . And even then his choice is made by googling "shortest uni degree high pay straight out of graduation" and spinning a wheel with his options. theyre a young gay couple who have rent to pay with no support system except the other broke queers they befriend, and though they love the housemates they live with so they can afford the roof over their heads, naim craves a place of their own -- intimacy not dictated by who might overhear. Pursuing your passion is for kids whose parents dont facilitate atrocities done against you bc you're queer. Naim and ryan don't have the luxury of choice.

So he spins the wheel, settles on a 4 year radiology degree that will get him a starting salary of almost 100k per year right out of uni. If a boring job is the trade off for guaranteed financial security, he can live with that.

but he still draws, sometimes. Fills cheap supermarket notebooks with sketches of frogs in snakes' mouths and powerlines and birds mid-flight. As ryan takes a sunday afternoon nap pillowed on his thighs he'll pull out a ball point and draw swirling patterns to cover the thin pink scars between his shoulder blades that are the exact width and spacing of his own hands. He chooses practicality over passion so they can have their life together, spending long days in a dark room staring at pictures of insides and the stupid things people do to them.
