It’s 2026. The bear flag is 31 years old. The leather flag turned 37 last month. If you’re including the toothpaste, ace, aro, and intersex flags that have been around for about a decade and a half at most but not the leather or bear flags, I can only assume it’s a deliberate statement of your beliefs about which body types and behaviors should be visible and which should be invisible.

If I see just the rainbow or progress flag, or if I see just the rainbow/progress flag and trans flag, I don’t take that as “this person or organization hates fat gay guys and the kinksters who have been marching at the front of our parades longer than I’ve been alive,” I take it as “Yeah this person or organization is phoning it in with the two flags by which the broadest swaths of the community feel included.” If an individual or an organization has a dozen flags and the bear and leather flags are absent, that seems like a deliberate statement of exclusion instead of a low-effort way to cover all the bases.
