Jo’s mere presence there was reassuring, but hearing her words were more so. Reaching out Claire let her arms settle around her, taking the offered hug. She wasn’t usually much for hugging, but something about this case was really getting to her and she was glad for the comfort. 

“Just, maybe keep this between us?” she mumbled, pulling away from the hug and stepping back into the room so Jo could get inside. “I don’t care if Jody knows, I just don’t want…everyone else knowing.” 

Everyone else— sure, Jo was going to buy that line. The woman would know who she meant, who the word was thinly veiling. The thing was, they’d told her not to be stupid and hunt like a dumbass. They’d warned her about getting in too deep and as much as she didn’t want to admit that she wanted to impress the Winchester’s, she very much did. She wanted their approval in some weird twisted way and she hated that she did but there it was. 

“Umm…ok, the last kid was found last night. Whatever this thing is, it’s feeding about every three days,” she said. “That gives us some time before it can snag someone else.”

Jo smiled at the question and nodded, following Claire into the room. “Don’t worry, nobody needs to know our business,” she promised Claire. When she was Claire’s age she’d made her fair share of mistakes, and the older dickbag hunters harping on her never helped.

She listened to Claire tell her about the latest victim and nodded, moving to sit down at the small table in the dingy room. Though it wasn’t one she’d been in, it was still eerily familiar. So many crummy motel rooms were near identical.

She wanted to make sure Claire knew they were in this together. Yes, she was the more experienced hunter here, and she knew she could probably do this on her own, but helping Claire seemed like a better idea, at least as far as the girl was concerned. She could teach Claire, help her get better, so this didn’t happen again.

It was complicated, and Michael wasn’t sure where to begin answering her questions. 

“I suppose it depends on who it is and what they want,” he said, letting himself be truthful. They were partners here and feeding her some pretty lie about them not being an issue would do nothing but be a disservice to the both of them. 

“Some of the old gods don’t care anymore,” he answered, elaborating on what he knew. “Some of them checked out of dealing with Humanity centuries ago, much like Father did. Others stuck around, feeding off the worship of the pagans, especially now that the craft has taken off once more. How they feel about Father’s plans, about Heaven’s plans— I can’t answer that.” 

Without knowing who was here it was hard to know how to fight them either. 

Michael was powerful, but being here on Earth without access to the full scope of his powers and Heaven was he strong enough to take on a God? Michael didn’t think so. He wasn’t even sure he could have leading Heaven. Gods were powerful, they were made differently than he was. They were equals to his Father in all ways.

“I don’t know if we can win this,” he said finally, looking at Jo somberly. 

Jo let out a soft sigh as Micahel’s answers did little to actually answer her questions. She knew that wasn’t his fault, though, they were both in over their heads here. It was a position she didn’t like being in, though. The lack of answers only made her skin crawl. “Well, let’s not try to win, then,” she told him, which felt weird even as she said it. Fighting and winning was what she knew, but going up against a good was foolhardy at best, straight up suicidal at worst.

“We’ll calmly poke around, see what’s happening. If there are people who need help, we can try to get them out without ruffling any godly feathers, and if shit goes south you can fly us out?” she suggested, feeling a little better now that there was at least some sort of plan.

Four teens dead, their brains liquefied seemingly out of nowhere with no other symptoms ever preceding the event. Each teen had been found at home, playing video games either at the television or on their computer when it happened. They’d all been home alone, their parents coming home from work to find them, devastated by the horrible scene meeting them. 

It was the kind of awful mishap that left a town talking, even getting some national attention as a few nightly news broadcasts mentioned it. There were no leads, nothing at all— at least as far as the police were concerned. 

Claire had been in town for a week, having picked up the case when the first two teens had been found. Now on her watch two more were dead and she didn’t feel any closer to solving the damn thing than she was when she’d gotten there. 

Frustration, guilt, anger— the emotions were a tangled ball deep inside her chest, a mixture that had led to her reaching out for help. Jody had been busy and that was fine because Claire hadn’t wanted to admit to her or the Winchester’s that she’d managed to get two people killed because she couldn’t crack this one. She couldn’t stand the thought of that, it was bad enough she was going to admit it to anyone at all…but it couldn’t be them.

“Hey,” she sighed in greeting, emotion in her words as she stood in the doorway to her motel, happy to great Jo the second her car was parked out front. “I swear Jo, I…I really thought I could handle this one alone.” 

Jo had been a little surprised when she’d received the call from Claire asking for help, but the woman was more than happy to head out and assist the young hunter in any way she needed. Hell, a part of her was really happy that Claire had trusted her enough to reach out and call, she knew Claire was stubborn, and fiercely independent, just as she had been at that age, and wanted to help the young woman any way she could.

Thankfully she had been between jobs at the time, and not too far away, so it didn’t take her long to make the trip a few states over to the address Claire had sent her.

Climbing out of her truck, Jo flashed the woman a tight smile as she walked towards Claire, hearing the tightness in her voice, recognizing the emotion behind her words.

Steve had nowhere to be. Everyone would be at the charity event until the wee hours leaving him time to wander the streets of New York feeling sorry for himself. He didn’t have nothing to do. Bucky couldn’t come with them and there was this little burger joint in their old neighborhood that was still open and still owned by the same family. The burgers were nostalgia and Steve could use a little nostalgia right now. Besides that he hated leaving Bucky out of things, even events like this one that nobody really wanted to attend. Tony was right, though. They had to show up for this.

When he heard a familiar voice behind him he just so happened to be stopping at an intersection. He had to get to a parking garage because in NYC even Captain America has to pay out the nose to stow his bike for a few hours. Jo was already in sight when Steve turned around and her kind face tugged a corner of his mouth. His hands in his pockets, his shoulders rolled forward like a man battling exhaustion, but he tried to straighten up at her approach, “Jo. You’re out kinda late?”

A relieved smile spread across Jo’s face as the man finally stopped and she was able to catch up with him. “It’s really not that late,” she said with a chuckle, coming to a stop next to him. Between hunting and bartending, she was up later than this most nights doing work of some kind. As far as she was concerned it wasn’t too late if the sun wasn’t coming up.

      Harvelle… Ah, the family of hunters. Not surprising, really, given what he’s just caught her doing. He gives her hand a firm shake, before he hums quietly and releases his grip on it to incline his head in a light nod.

     “The very same.” He returns his hand to his side and offers her a smile, one brow lifting upward. “I do hope that doesn’t change the civility of this conversation? It doesn’t for me, of course, and I’d much prefer this to stay pleasant.” 

Jo scraped her upper lip through her teeth. “Well, if half the stories I’ve heard about you lot is true, I couldn’t kill you even if I wanted to, so staying pleasant sounds just peachy to me,” she said after a moment, flashing him an almost-friendly smile. Of course, she didn’t know how much truth there was to those stories, but she wasn’t about to start a fight she potentially couldn’t finish.

Girls Night Out|| Ry and Jo

It had been far too long since she had seen the woman she would call her best friend. It was convenient that Jo happened to be in New York, too, allowing them to meet and catch up with relative ease. 

Parking in the lot of the building that Jo had sent her the address to. She climbed from the Firebird, gaze shifting to the glowing neon sign as she did her routine check that she had everything she needed. This either a bar or a club; she was betting on the latter, knowing Jo.

Pulling out her phone, she pulled up her conversation with Jo.  [Text: Jo] Hey lady, I’m here. Where’s your lame ass?

Jo was more than excited to have her best friend in town. She was a familiar face in a huge city and this ridiculous situation that she had been swept up into. She had a whole lot to catch Ry up on, and she was already inside, two drinks in front of her, when her phone buzzed.

Grinning at the text, she quickly typed up a response.

“You and me both.” Sam blew out a quiet breath, relieved that it wasn’t anything more dangerous to deal with. “But that just means there’s still something in this building somewhere and I doubt it’s gonna be as easy to handle.”

All the same, he stepped close and gave her a quick hug, glad to have her there even if he was worried. “Let’s get to it, huh?”

Fight like a Girl | Bonnie and Jo

If that was not the rub of it all. Bonnie huffed out a slight laugh, nodding in agreement before walking with the blonde to the door. “We really don’t.” Her lips twitched slightly, melancholia threatening for a second to drag her under. But she was more than used to fighting past it, so she did, and instead she focused on the woman beside her.

Bonnie smiled in thanks at Jo when the other pulled the door open for her. Amusement coloured her features and she shook her head with another laugh. “What wasn’t she into?” The herbal remedies were only the tip of the iceberg. She had magic, of course, at her finger tips, but Grams had also read tarot cards for neighbours who wanted an idea on their future. “She taught the history of occult at the college a town over, so there was a lot going on in her house.”

“Oh wow, I didn’t know that was a thing in colleges,” Jo said with a grin. “If they’d taught that at my college I might not have dropped out.” She didn’t know how true that was, it was hard to go to school and pretend to be a normal person when there were people out there dying constantly. But it might have been a little easier if she had been around people who were at least a little like-minded.

“Dating is complicated for anyone, sugar,” he said lightly. “There ain’t a quick an’ easy guide. You’re always gonna be feelin’ your way through it. But if you’ve got anythin’ that you wanna get off your chest, you know I’ll sit down an’ hear you out.”

He eyed her for a few moments with a little smile, then added casually, “So when d’you figure you’re gonna be meetin’ up with him next?”

Jo smiled softly as she listened to Bobby speak. She knew he was always there for her, she never doubted that. “We’re mostly just playing things by ear right now,” she said honestly, relaxing back into the chair. “It’s all new still, you know? So until he tells Dean, we’re just going to keep things on the downlow,” she explained. It wasn’t ideal, but it was understandable.

      Elijah offers her a smile once the stake is stowed away into her pocket, before he laughs softly and glances down at the body that she nudges with her boot. “I have no intentions of doing so. So I suppose we’re all good, hm?” 

      Extending a hand toward her, Elijah cocks his head to the left a little. “Elijah Mikaelson. It’s a pleasure.” 

Jo wiped her hand on the thigh of her jeans before reaching out to shake his hand in greeting. “Jo Harvelle,” she introduced herself easily, her head cocking to one side as she mulled his name over for a moment.

“Well, at least your mother taught you enough not to mess with things that much bigger than you on y’own.” He noted, dropping his bag to the floor as he walked into the motel room. He was actually glad she’d called him versus anyone else for this. He had experience that he knew very few other hunters had. “You do any research? Or d’you decide to just jump in head first and figure out how to swim when y’started drownin’?

Jo shot her uncle an annoyed look as he questioned her. “Of course I did research,” she told him, the table covered in books and papers, her notebook open and full of notes. "You act like I haven’t been putting together case files and doing the research for hunters since I was little.”

There’s a flash of intrigue in her eyes and an amused hum off her lips at that answer. “So am I,” she says. “But not of pocket knives.” Her preferred weapon is hard to find and often lost in the heat of battle, others just won’t last more than a couple fights.

Elektra looks over the display of katanas and tanto blades with clear disapproval. “Finding something well-made, however, can be a challenge.” The vendor shoots her a dirty look and she gives a sarcastic one back. “Do you hunt?” It’s a more innocent question than it sounds; most of the people at this convention are sporting camo and hiking boots. Odds were lowering that this woman was a hired sword, but it had been known to happen.

Jo smirked at the woman as she made her thoughts of the blades by the vendor known. The woman wasn’t shy, and that was something she could respect. “I do. A few different things,” she said vaguely. Even if the woman was just talking game, Jo wouldn’t be lying. It was rare, but she’d been known to take down a deer or two... roughly twenty years ago.

One of Those Days | Sam & Jo

He took a deep breath, blew it out slowly and swung round as the door opened, his gun coming up to cover himself as he shone his flashlight into the room. An animal screech filled the room and Sam jerked round to face it, heart pounding so hard he thought it was going to burst -

A very annoyed raccoon was perched on a pile of discarded boxes, venting its displeasure at having been walked in on by two stupid humans. Sam let out a shaky laugh and lowered the pistol.

     “Mhm, ‘cept you’re forgetting one very important thing,” he mentioned in a vaguely sarcastic nonchalance, his eyes closed, hands behind his head as though he were laying in a field of stars, even though the only thing above was the clicking of the ceiling fan, the speckled ceiling.

     “We haven’t run into your mom. She may kill me yet.” His eyes opened, searching her like he was looking for some sorta answer to a question he hadn’t yet thought of.

Jo rolled her eyes, but there wasn’t any animosity in the expression. “You need to stop being afraid of my mother,” she told him, shoving a pillow behind her back as she leaned against the headboard.

      His lips tug upwards for a moment as his gaze darts between her and the bodies, before he hums softly and gestures vaguely toward the stake in her hand.

     “You’ll only be in trouble if you attempt to use that on me. Otherwise, we’re quite fine.” 

Jo arched an eyebrow, debating for a moment before flipping the stake in her hand, shoving the blunt end into her back pocket. It was still in easy reach, if necessary, but effectively stowed away.
