This week I f-ed up at work. Nothing career ending but a human mistake that caused a lot of frustration for people. I was feeling incredibly down about myself. In the middle of it all my phone buzzed for an incoming email. An AO3 comment. The comment was, “<3”. And I’m not gonna be melodramatic and say that <3 saved my life but it may very well have saved my soul, knowing that something I’d put out into the world brought someone joy, when all around me it seemed like all I could do was bring people down. COMMENTS. MEAN. SO. MUCH.

I only hate certain types of fic the same way I hate mosquitos and ticks. Like get these nasty little buggers away from me but also I respect their place in the ecosystem.

Listen and sometimes? To enjoy running through a beautiful field of grass and flowers (ao3) you have to tolerate the fact that bugs (fics you don’t like) are there and maybe you will even encounter one, but you can use bugspray (filtered tags) to reduce the likelihood of that. Because the alternative is not getting to experience the beautiful field of grass and flowers.

Writer confidence is not a thing you build and then have. It's a thing you have for about eleven minutes after writing something good and then it evaporates and you have to make more. There is no reservoir. There is no saving it up. You produce it fresh each time from scratch like some kind of emotional artisan bread and if you don't write for a few days you run out and have to start the whole process over again from flour.

honestly one of my favorite things about fanfic is when you can see the canon influences come out in really subtle ways. like a canon line thats mentioned once as a throwaway is suddenly the entire premise for a fic or it influences the characterization or something. its just so cool to see how people weave their ideas around a source material, especially if its not a detail i'd thought about before
