"I know you can not hear me." He sat on the edge of the world, legs dangling off the broken asphalt and concrete that terminated into the vast emptiness of space and the cool gaze of stars. O gazed back at them, as unblinking as they were. His arms were folded across his chest, hunched forward slightly, relaxed and tense all at once. Just as he did every night, he sat here and stared off into the depths of the galaxy, waiting, hoping, begging to see the glint of an approaching spacecraft or the glow of some divine energy. Something. Anything. And each night, he was left wanting. Left sitting here, asking questions of what happened, where was she, will she come back? For a time, he thought he was being punished, but that was quickly cast aside. Something was wrong. Something had happened. But if something had happened, he needed to wait here. "It has been over sixty-three days, fourteen hours, nine minutes, and five seconds since the check in date. The day you were supposed to update us came and went, with nothing to show for it." The stars glittered like tears. "I miss you. The others ask of what happened to you. Of what happened to 'Tessa'. Eventually I will have to do something. B is too foolish to question things deeply. But T is another matter. He suspects. If not now, than surely in the future." Nothing. "I should have gone with you. I should have never let you leave without me by your side. I should have…" His hand dipped into a coat pocket and came out with something clenched in it. He sighed. "I should have asked you years ago." The pair of gold rings were tarnished and scratched from untold ages of weathering and abuse. It had taken him ages to find any. They were anything but pretty, but then, neither had either of them been when they first met. They caught the light of the stars, and for a brief moment O could believe that he was holding the galaxy itself in his palm.
