One Piece has really made me appreciate how fucking good and necessary a wide age range is for an ensemble cast.
If it was a crew of 10 teenagers we’d have run out of ways to switch up character dynamics a long time ago. Things would feel same-y and far less charming than what we have now, which is a crew consisting of five way-too-ambitious dudes in their late teens and early twenties, a fifteen year old who everyone treats like a baby cause he still has a spark in his eyes, two criminals in their early-to-mid 30s who despite being more mature still let the teens do whatever they want for their own joy and entertainment, a dude in his mid-40s who doesn’t realize that quitting his current job to go on a world tour with a 19 year old he just met ABSOLUTELY counts as a midlife crisis, and an old man so old he DIED. I love you Strawhat Pirates.
the thing is sanji and zoro both have self-worth issues just in different fonts. sanji's self-worth issues are "my life is inherently less valuable and i have to always be giving in order to be worth something" and zoro's self-worth issues are "if i can't live up to (completely unrealistic expectations) then i'm not worth anything and was never worth anything to begin with." so sanji is always trying to be someone and do something for other people and zoro is always pushing himself further and further to the point where it basically becomes self-harm. and it ties into their personas. sanji performs over-the-top service and zoro performs stoicism and steadiness (and people fall for it! including large portions of the fandom!)
and then you combine that with their loyalty/devotion complexes and that's how you get the worst cocktail of self-sacrificial tendencies in the one piece world.
in shellstown zoro tells luffy 'if you stand between me and my goal i'll force you to commit harikiri'. after his fight with mihawk his dream is already starting to shift, and suddenly he doesn't just want to be world's best swordsman for himself and kuina but also for the king of the pirates. at thriller bark, he asks "what's the point of great ambition if you can't protect your captain?" closely followed by dracule mihawk looking zoro in the eyes and saying 'i see your priorities are different now.' because his dream has now become SO entangled with luffy's that he can't imagine a reality where he achieves his without the other. he tells kaido, 'i'll follow my captain to hell if i have to' because he's not going to leave luffy again, not even in death-- he will not continue without him. a far cry from his original statement when the first met, but to be loved is to be changed.
Writing and characterizing Luffy is really just trying to decide the ratios between
- Luffy pretending to be stupid to put someone at ease or make them lower their guard
- Luffy pretending to be stupid because there’s complicated political shit happening that he can’t be bothered to deal with and he wants someone else to do the thinking for him
- Luffy seemingly pretending to be stupid so he can drop some insane brilliant iconic move only what actually happened was that the genius solution to the problem seemed so obvious and straightforward to him that he didn’t bother to explain it to anybody because he honestly didn’t think he had to
- Luffy seeming stupid because he has a very clear understanding of the power scale, potential risks, and capability of his crew, and he knows for a fact they can handle just about anything so he doesn’t need to pay attention too all the warnings and the planning and the whatever. Teehee gum gum go boing because Taking Fights Seriously is for people who can’t dog walk warlords
- And Luffy genuinely sincerely just being extremely fucking stupid.

stop asking ai for advice and start asking bitches with tarot cards to read your future
I read somewhere that Luffy is so keen on being friends with Law because Law is the first person in his life to ever approach him first. In every other relationship, it was Luffy asking, or demanding, to be friends first.
And I haven't been the same ever since.
look considering oda's track record marco's full name could not have been anything else but marco polo but i respect his dedication in revealing this stupid ass pun about 500chaps since the initial setup
Garp: The system is broken and can’t be fixed, but I’m already stuck inside it, so I will dedicate my life to keeping as many people from dying in its name as I can.
Dragon: The system is rigged and must be dismantled, its foundations torn up, and its perpetuators held accountable so that something better can be built with the good of all in mind.
Luffy: The system is meaningless because free will is inherent to all living creatures and no amount of violence or suppression can take that truth away.
i love in One Piece whenever a deeply traumatized character tries to convince luffy that they're unlovable and that he's better off leaving them behind and that he shouldn't waste his time on them and luffys reaction every time is the most blunt "what the fuck are you talking about? are you stupid?"

it's probably been said multiple times already but it is so obvious that opla is made for the fans. sanji showing vulnerability so early on making us love him even more. sanji and zoro being not openly aggressive with each other but borderline flirty. not just nami being close with vivi but pretty much everyone else as well. usopp being actually praised by his crewmates for his achievements. mihawk having no actual reason to appear in season two but being there anyway because steven john ward is a fucking delight. so much robin from the get go because lera abova is just so wonderful and they knew we will want more of her. cameo of brook so early on. reference to ace. mugiwaras being kinda both platonic and romantic towards each other. i can keep going. just so much love radiating from the screen. it's a love letter to the viewer in a way.
He just wants to be like his dad.
