Why I think Frieren's Vilains are inspired by V. V Argost of "The Secret Saturdays"
"Demons are simply monsters who have learned human speech. You only communicate with lies."
"Words to them are a means of deceiving humans. They do not understand the feelings behind words. That is why there is no reasoning with them."
"Just as demons deceive humankind with words, you must use your mana to deceive demons."
"The more you desire coexistence, the more people die by your hands."
It is no secret that I began to watch Frieren after seeing how many praised it without making it forceful, when I did I was mesmerized by the story, characters and worldbuilding.
Frieren cemented herself as my favorite elf of all time, Himmel is an amazing hero, Stark is what I wanted more of Zenitsu and is beautifully human, Fern is a sweetie and I enjoy every minute of watching her onscreen, Flamme is an amazing and wise mage whereas Serie is a warmonger that thinks strength alone is what keeps you going.
But what fascinated me more was how Frieren treats its villains specifically the "Demons"
Recently, the media is training us into consuming "Redemption arcs that are unfulfilling" and "evil is beautiful despite the blood they shed" and overlook it by making it they did good, when in reality they didn't face the consequences of their actions nor did they reflect on what they did, but Frieren like "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit Trilogy" does none of that and I love it because the creator and writer of Frieren knows that anything that might look harmless is actually dangerous underneath the surface so basically "A wolf in sheep's clothing" hiding in plain sight.
You might ask "what does it have to do with Argost?".
Well my friends before Frieren came, "The Secret Saturdays" warned us about Monsters who claim to be human, the writer of "TSS" were way ahead of their time and knew what they were doing with their main suave big bad.
When I was a kid watching this underrated gem of a cartoon I was terrified of Argost, unlike the other Cryptids that were with Zak, they were kind and safe to be around but only use their instincts to protect Zak and his family as they are part of it.
V. V. Argost was an enigmatic figure that enjoyed showing off in his own TV Show called "Weird World", at first glance he might look like a human with eccentric tendencies, but underneath something off lurked inside of him and we didn't know what.
So as the show keeps its plot going we discover more and more about him, that he is after absolute power, the one Zak has inside him and is constantly putting him on the spot about it and tries to strike a deal with Zak without his parents' and Uncle Doyle knowledge of it in hopes to save them from it.
After we saw the place where those curse powers were about to be extracted, we were given the two biggest plot twists that our tiny minds were never ready to process...
Argost is a Yeti and Crypitid, and the murder of Drew and Doyle's parents making him responsible for their separation at such a tender age.
We the audience through the next episode began to gather the pieces together on what made him the way he is.
Like Frieren's demons who learned to mimic human speech pattern and behaviors, Argost learned it too from the tool called "Visual Media" the same one he uses that gained him a following including the hero himself "Zak" as he said it himself "Smile for the cameras little Saturday, let them know what a big fan you are".
He knew that humans believed and consumed anything unless they realise it is wrong, but most importantly how gullible they can be when the right methods are used.
"There are two ways to be fooled:'one is to believe what it isn't true, the other is to believe what it is" - Viggo Grimborn
The Viggo quote sums up how self-aware he is of what he learned about human nature and how he can weaponize it.
Like the demons from Frieren, Argost is a predator amongst prey that managed to make his fans "lambs to slaughter" to the point that the heroes except very few who believe in them, are shunned and hated by most people because of their blind faith in Argost, but his biggest flaw was his thirst for power that made him rely on brute force instead of his cunning which ultimately led to his demise.
The same applies to the demons Solitär and Macht both learned and walked amongst humans yet they cannot fathom what it means to be human and in the end they surrendered to their base instincts, not just them... The Demon girl that Himmel spared then killed her, Lügner as he was keeping Linie and Dracht in line, Aura the Guillotine and the other members of the Seven Sages of Destructions including Quall.
In other words... Argost and the Demons are aware of what they are doing yet always surrender to their basic instincts no matter how much they learn, they are predators and they gladly embody that.
I hope you enjoyed my rant have a blessed day and take care of yourselves.
