It does not make you a bad person if you read/write a kink. It doesn't make you a bad person for reading/writing a ship. It does NOT make you a bad person for liking a character.

Here's the thing. As far as reading/writing taboo things: Fanfiction is FICTION. People use fanfiction to explore all sorts of things- past trauma, uncomfortable feelings, experiences they're not sure how to express on their own, taking control of feelings and making them their own, or tackling them in a safe, fictional situation, rather than their own life.

For example, a person may read or write about a nonconsensual situation because they're working through having experienced something like that in the past. They may feel like they are being 'taken advantage of' in their own life. They may feel safer to work through those feelings through fanfic, rather than processing their own reality. They may also just...relate to the characters.

When it is fiction, it doesn't always directly reflect a person's moral wants or desires.

While I'm not going to get into kink too much on a blog where I know minors follow me, there's a HUGE history and a lot of research that shows that kink is NOT the same thing as actually wanting things to happen in an uncontrolled situation. If you like reading a noncon kink, it doesn't automatically mean you want someone to take advantage of you/you want to take advantage of someone. It could mean that you want someone to take control for you or YOU want to take control, in a consensual way.

Tropes are the same. If you like age gap, for example, it could mean that you just like the idea of being taken care of. It doesn't mean you want to be with someone 30 years older. And even if you like the fantasy of it, it doesn't mean you actually want it IRL. It might be that you just like reading about how it could be. The feelings behind it can be what's enticing, not the actual act, because you now IRL it wouldn't be good at all.

Reading fanfic about these taboo things isn't bad. I think the only time it would be a red flag is if you get the urge to do something IRL to/with someone that is not safe, sane, or consensual. But plenty of people read fanfics about things they would never dream of wanting irl and that's OKAY! Like, I read fanfics about Barty and Evan stabbing each other while fucking, and I'm not about to go stab anyone! I just think that idea of passion is hot. It's okay to just enjoy reading things!

It's also important to know that when people denounce kinks or ships in fanfic- ANY KINKS OR SHIPS - and call for censorship, they're travelling a slippery slope.

Sure, many people are NOT here for things like incest, and that's okay! I, myself, get the ick from things like incest. But when people ask for that to be censored, that starts setting a precedent that things considered immoral can be censored. And who's to say what's immoral? Because if it's someone like Trump, all of our gay fanfic will be gone.

Lastly, liking a character does NOT reflect a person's morality, nor does writing that character in a positive way mean anything.

I have had SO MANY PEOPLE send me hate because I like Regulus, because I write him as a decent person, because I write rosekiller together. Fanfiction doesn't reflect your morals. It's just fiction. It's a means of creative expression, not a political statement. Sure, you can make a statement with what you write, but me making Regulus hot and gay isn't me saying I'm a facist. It's just me writing fanfic. I promise, it's not that deep.
