Casual reminder that working off the clock is illegal. Unless you’re salaried or authorized for overtime there is no reason for you to stay late. None. Your employers know this, too.

That’s the thing: it’s literally just a job to us. We’re getting paid for our jobs. We’re not getting paid to pretend we’re over the moon about the work itself. That’s honestly nonsense. If you love your job, great. But even if you do, you should still get paid for exactly however long you worked.

not to mention that, in many jobs, working overtime is unpaid, and many of us *literally cannot afford to stay* either because they have a second job to get to or other necessary obligation.

A few helpful sentences in cases where people wanna get up your ass about this: “I have met all my deadlines. If there comes a point when I am not meeting my deadlines, we can discuss my work habits.” “Can you tell me what it is about my work that you think requires spending extra time at work?” “I have no issue staying late if there’s an emergency or coming in early for a meeting if necessary, but otherwise, I am going to do my work well and go home on time.” From experience, I can tell you middle-aged white men do not like hearing this, especially from women, so prepare for some blowback but stand your ground.
