Thinking about Martin looking at this kid when he found him and gave him that name because he found something that was lost. That he like the historical saint was found in a terrible situation but could be saved.

If Tristan picked it seeing himself in that figure because he wants to help other people who were lost like him?

Also from a narrative lens, Tristan is Garret's guide so many times. He steps in when there's no way out and is the one to save the day so many times.

Another wonderful layer of this is Tristan role in the new order of Saint George is a fantastic mirror to St Anthony. The real life Saint himself took part in the newly formed order of the Franciscans despite the violence happening in the 12th century within the catholic church at the time. Great mirror to Tristan taking Garret side despite the risk.

The knight Tristan ( sometimes of the round table, sometimes just some guy) is a prefect mirror for Talon Saga Tristan. Also another thing that supports Tristan and Garret are in love but publishers wouldn't allow it.

In the story of Tristan. The knight is ordered to guide Lady Iseult back to marry Tristan uncle Mark. Well as peer usual in medieval romances this does not work out and Tristan and Iseult fall in love. (whether this by love potion consumed on accident on on person depends on the version. But regardless of any love potion issues even after it wears off they stay in love. ) as you can imagine this would have problems. So Tristan in his knightly honor is in most version forced to flee and stay away from Iseult as to not ruin her marriage. In some version he comes back and is killed. In another version he is killed abroad and begs for Iseult saying she is the only cure but she arrives to late and seeing Tristan dead she dies of grief.

Ok enough context and onto why I think this fits Tristan. Spoilers for Tristan in Talon ahead.

1) As someome who has been in St George longer then Garret he does play a guiding role like the medieval Tristan. Additionally he is falls in love, in the Canon forms a friendship, with the person he is supposed to be looking out for and causes problems.

2) they are separated because of Garret( Iseult in this case) decides to be with someone else. We see Tristan entering a grieving arc and trying to convince Garret otherwise.

3) They do come back together but it under a public lie. In some versions of court Tristan comes back to vist Iseult in disguse and is caught. This in Talon is obviously the moment of Tristan pretending to capture Garret so he can kill the Patriarch.

4) Tristan almost dies and it is Garret that saves him like Iseult tried to save Medieval Tristan. In the church it is Garret who hears Tristans last words and the one who insists he is alive. ( Bonus in the Beroul poem Medieval Tristan almost dies in a church , aka uses a church to escape an execution)
