idk man when i was a kid i remember a lot of adults saying "if you can read and follow directions, you can cook" so i was like yes i can do these two things. doesn't seem that hard. and it wasn't! so it just always surprises me when i see people of any age who are capable of reading and following directions bemoaning how impossibly hard cooking is. like i know i'm always on this hobbyhorse but it just seems like a lot of people have never developed basic life skills and instead of going "oh wow that's embarrassing, i should learn and catch up" they instead get defensive and turn it into a learned-helplessness thing where they CAN'T POSSIBLY be expected to learn something that's SOOOO HARD. and suddenly somehow we're the oppressors for thinking it's weird that a grown adult can't grill themselves a cheese.
At some point the gaps in your knowledge/abilities become your responsibility. Someone may have neglected to teach you or let you practice a skill, but when you are a grown adult the initiative to learn is on you. Keeping yourself stuck in a state of helplessness over the discomfort of making up a deficit becomes a choice you're making, and it's one that hurts you in the long run.
Shout out to the phrase βIβm going to become the jokerβ for capturing a very specific and real emotion
common advice for social anxiety is to tell yourself "people aren't going to think less of you just because you said something a bit daft" but the thing is. sometimes they will. and you just have to learn to be cool with that and to treat it as a dnd random encounter rather than letting it ruin your whole day
Genuine question: Why aren't people in the U.S. calling the massive influx of homelessness and encampments Trumptowns like they called shanty towns and encampments Hoovervilles during the Great Depression? Why aren't we trying to embarrass him for HIS policy failures in 2020 that lead to spikes in homelessness? Why aren't we actively talking about them more and reminding everyone who cut federal funds for non-profits, local governments, and other groups doing the work to support and help people experiencing homelessness?

we don't hate J.J. Abrams enough
Branson Reese, whoever you are, I keep your words in my heart all the time.
"branson reese, whoever you are" put some respect on the smooth sharks one fear man's name
we should learn to speak in a language that rich people who don't dream can't comprehend
What helped me write trauma better is remembering that the nervous system learns predictions. If danger used to come after quiet, calm can feel threatening. If kindness used to come with a price, kindness can feel suspicious. So healing is not just βthey know theyβre safe now.β Healing is the slow, annoying, deeply unfair process of teaching the body that the old prediction is not always the present truth.

If Hadestown has a moral, she says, then itβs βyou have to try, you have to have hope, not because success is a given β itβs not. Orpheus fails. We heroiciseβ β here she breaks off to apologise that jet lag has led to her making up words β βwe heroicise Orpheus not because he succeeds but because he tries, and that endeavour alone is worthwhile. How to live, and not merely survive, is to believe things could change.β

you must break the pattern today or the loop will repeat tomorrow
i was training a young person at work, and she referred to sexual assault as "SA" out loud, and i immediately was like, "no, it's sexual assault, call it what it is," bc idgaf if the algorithm overlords have taught y'all that you should fear direct language, how tf do any of you expect to ever address real issues with any amount of seriousness if you can't even say the words? imagine an advocate looking a sexual assault survivor in the eyes and asking "did he grape you?" it's absolutely fucking absurd, but these young interns and new hires are coming into an environment where we deal with survivors of all different kinds of abuse, and they're coming with the mindset that the words are as bad as the actions, and that makes them shitty at the job and look juvenile af
i HATE self-censorship for a lot of reasons, but being in crisis work makes it even more frustrating. who are you censoring for? like i am being so fr, WHO are you censoring for? have you even thought it through? people who have been raped know that they have been raped. if someone attempts suicide or is grieving someone who did, saying "sewer slide" isn't going to protect them from any of the feelings. a murder victim's family isn't going to feel better bc you said "unalived" instead of murdered. if anything, it's just extremely invalidating and othering. it's saying "what happened to you is so bad that i won't even say the word," which is NOT trauma-informed care. you are not protecting survivors/victims when you self-censor. the ONLY things you protect when you self-censor are the puritanical ideologies that are being encouraged by rich fascists who want your money and obedience
say the fucking words, guys. just say the goddamn words before i go insane!!!
