Inspired by the ASOIAF/Bayeux Tapestry crossover I just reblogged, let’s take a look at the historical artifact itself.

William the Conqueror’s half-brother, Odo, is centrally connected to one of the main surviving sources for the Norman Conquest: the Bayeux Tapestry. [1] While folklore often romantically associates the Tapestry with William’s wife Matilda, this connection has been thoroughly debunked. [2] Instead, secondary clues have placed the Tapestry as a work contemporary to the events it illustrates, sewn in England – likely St. Augustine’s Abbey, Kent – and completed, very probably on Odo’s commission, sometime before 1082, when he fell into disfavor with his royal brother. [3] His appearances within the Tapestry itself are rare but strategically chosen, and it will be argued herein that his internal depiction strengthens the case for his external patronage.

Odo does not physically appear in the Tapestry for some time, as it opens with the narrative concerning Harold Godwinson’s visit to Normandy. But he makes his presence known before he does, in the depiction of the crucial event of Harold’s oath-taking to William – the event that Norman justifications of the Conquest were built on. [4] The Tapestry is alone among contemporary sources in claiming the oath occurred at Bayeux itself, the seat of Odo’s bishopric, on holy relics placed before Bayeux Cathedral. [5] This creates an association between the crux of the Norman claim and Odo, as if his holdings were the place where William’s right to the English throne (so far as the Normans saw it) was formally sealed.

Harald Godwinson, the Anglo-Saxon, was the son of Gytha Thorkelsdóttir, the sister-in-law to Estrid Svendsdatter, the wife of King Cnut the Great, kind of Norway from 1028 to 1035. Harald was thus, an Anglo-Norse monarch, or, for the sake of simplicity, a Norseman

William "the Bastard" de Normandie - later "the Conqueror" - was the Duke of Normandy, and a Norman, as the redundant titles suggest. The house of de Normandie, and rulers of Normandy, descend from Rollo "the Walker", a Norse Viking who made a deal with Charles the Simple of West Francia that granted him the duchy in exchange for defense against other Viking raiders. William was, thus, a Norseman ("Norman" - "North-man", the same etymology as "Norseman")
