just watched Obsession (2026) in theaters and GIRL that movie had me actually scared, horror movies rarely get to me like that, Inde Navarette better win some awards for that role cause she was fucking terrifying. I love the obvious inspiration the director took from Kairo (2001), they used the staging and lighting so fucking well.
my only regret is that I didn't check doesthedogdie beforehand, because there is an upsetting animal death in it.
but hell, I wanted to get scared and I did, a lot, so easy 9/10. goddam.
riso print inspired by the southern reach series in light lime, green, and purple ink :]
Another mini illustration to go with the rowlet one.
Experimented with black and white but decided to go with the colour one.
“If I have one message to give to the secular American people, it’s that the world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don’t know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same.”
― Marjane Satrapi, Iranian graphic novelist
Goodnight, and rest in peace, Marjane Satrapi. Thank you for your work and your voice. May we hear you.
the way prehistoric animal documentaries will talk about extinction like it happens because of “a failure to evolve” as though evolution is a meritocracy is so funny and so scary
this species persisted over the eons because of its Protestant work ethic to produce more of a specific kind of digestive enzyme that allowed it to extract 4% more nutrients from the dominant plant species in the area
I have worked in scicomm for a decade, some of that at a paleontology. I would ask you to trust me that evolution is popularly mischaracterized like a kind of smart investment rather than a game of chance and circumstance and that every day I had to find ways to delicately correct guests’ misunderstandings, but you can literally just watch almost any dinosaur or prehistoric animal documentary with an ear for the language and framing around it. You could probably make a drinking game out of it but I think you might die if you took a shot every time a dinosaur documentary invoked the concept of monarchy alone.
The language used in communicating scientific concepts is not neutral—just look at how the concept of evolutionary “fitness” has been warped in popular understanding to justify eugenics and ableism. There are some really good papers out there on stuff like the rhetoric of invasive species and how it reflects and reinforces xenophobic and nationalistic sentiments—to the point that some of it just reads like find-and-replace Yellow Peril propaganda.
This reminds me of how Walking With Dinosaurs would always try to be like "the dinosaurs stopped being as adaptable" as if that's what wiped them out and not a Chicago-sized asteroid dropping into the Gulf of Mexico, and even as a little kid watching my dinosaur shows I was just like "yeah, I don't think we'd do so hot if someone dropped a giant space rock on us either"
You can't evolve around air that's suddenly unbreathable (Great Oxygenation Event), sudden onset climate change (Ordovician, current), big space rock (Devonian, Cretaceous), or the floor suddenly becoming lava (Permian-Triassic, Triassic-Jurassic): sometimes you're on a great roll with natural selection and the universe still decides "you know what? Fuck you: gamma ray burst, motherfucker!" (Pleistocene Exinction Event)
Okay now I really wanna hear Spider-Rex's "one more time from the top" Spider-verse intro lmao

I was so scared they were heading for a romance subplot but congrats to Project Hail Mary for going for the far funnier option of 'Trolley Operator' and 'Guy She Is Actively Tying To The Tracks'. What a dynamic. Movie of the year.
when you’re a gay lion and you accidentally tried to introduce your lesbian lioness friend to one of her own exes at a gay bar and she goes into the bathroom and bitches you out for not being able to tell her endlessly rotating cast of girlfriends apart which isn’t really fair because first of all they all keep dyeing their hair different colors and second of all she keeps getting back together with different ones at different times and meanwhile you’ve been “single” for like 8 months but are spending a lot of time with one specific guy who works at your old co-op and were going to excitedly tell her about it tonight but now you’ve ruined the whole subject of dating by trying to introduce her to her own ex at a gay bar (which is a watering hole. because you’re lions.)Â
if you read about any biology you can quickly lose touch with what is astonishing and miraculous vs what is mundane, from animals that steal chloroplasts to become photosynthetic, to cloning technology being old hat, to trees that didn’t biodegrade for tens of millions of years, to naturally occurring lateral gene transfer between vastly different species, to the creation of gametes from adult cells, to the ability of some cancers to induce blood vessel growth, to desert shrimp that lie dormant for years, to the sensitivity of human touch receptors, to the fact that human hardware has a latent ability to see UV but their corneas block those wavelengths, to birds that echolocate and live in caves, to human skin being covered in enzymes that destroy RNA, to individual trees becoming genetic tapestries branch by branch, to life forms that gain energy from the electron potential of metals in their environments, to plants that recognize their siblings and adjust their behavior accordingly when growing next to them, to metamorphosis
which is to say. All of it is miraculous. and all of it is mundane. biology is Chaos vs. Order locking horns forever
