Hey, Jessica, thanks so much for chatting. I got your letter of resignation and I just wanted to call. I guess I was a little surprised ’cause, you know, you just got promoted to partner and you worked so hard for that. You mentioned a Christmas tree farm in this letter, and I’m just wondering, you know, what did they offer you? ’Cause I’m sure we could counter–

The speaker pauses, as though the person on the other side of the call is speaking.

Oh, you’re not gonna work at the farm. You are marrying the guy who owns it. Okay. I thought you were engaged to David over in Finance. Weren’t you guys together for a long time?

Brief pause.

Oh, you dated this guy in high school for three weeks. Okay, um, anyways, moving on. But, you know, you have just worked so hard for so long for this partner role, and I really hate to see you go.

Brief pause.

He made you believe in Christmas again? Is that a euphemism for something? Sorry, that was weird. That was inappropriate. I shouldn’t have asked you that. Anyways, you seem pretty set in this decision. So I jut wanna say, you know, we wish you the best in this next chapter. And the door’s always open if you change your mind. If you’d like to come back to the firm, we would welcome you. So please just keep in touch.

The clip cuts to the woman holding her cell phone, presumably now speaking with a superior.

Hey, yeah, I talked to her. She’s not gonna come back. But maybe just keep the job open for a couple weeks. Like, don’t post it yet, cause I’m really not sure how this Christmas tree farm thing is gonna pan out. I mean, she mentioned something about opening a year-round hot chocolate shop, but, like, what is that? That makes no sense.
