Spot the difference
One absolutely brilliant thing about the DnD movie was the names!!!
Jarnathan the aarakocra!! What a name? You can just see the DM not thinking that he would have to name any of the council.
DM: Okay you're in prison, you could break out but you have a meeting tomorrow to ask the council for absolution.
Edgin: who is on the council?
DM: A dragon born, an Aarakocra, a -
Edgin: what was the aarakocra called?
DM: ... Ummm ............... Jarnathan
I just love stupid obviously thought up on the spot DnD names being represented!

If space travel doesnât involve sea shanties then I think weâll have missed an opportunity.
You see though, for sea travel you want big strong people who are capable of managing rigging. For space travel you want small low-mass people who are technically educated, as they are called, nerds. Your space shanties are going to be less booming and more squeaky.
in so far as there will be space shanties, theyâll be filk
I call shenanigans on the big strong people; sailors were young and malnourished by modern standards, and climbing around the rigging is easier if youâre small and light.
Like, I am 100% in favor of shanties in as many situations as possible, but Iâm having trouble coming up with a mode of space travel that would require multiple humans to move in concert, thus necessitating songs with a strong beat to move to. Â
Sea chanties were for providing a strong beat to move to. Â Space chanties might very well arise just because weâre bored, out there between point A and point B for so long.
(Also yes, @gdanskcityofficial up there has the right of it.)
Space shanties are for warp piloting. Under warp drive, human time perception and time as measured by crystal or atomic oscillators donât match. Starship pilots listen to a small unamplified chorus singing a careful rhythm while keeping their own eyes on a silent metronome that the chorus canât see, linked to a highly-precise atomic clock. How the chorus and metronome fall in and out of sync tells the pilot how to keep the ship safely in the warp bubble and correctly on course.
Depending on route, a typical warp jump can last anywhere from one to ten minutes, and most courses consist of five to fifteen jumps before a necessary four to six hour break to check the engines, plot the next set of jumps, and give everyone a chance to recover. A good shanty team, with reliable rhythm, a broad, versatile, and extendible repertoire, and the stamina to do 3-4 sets a day over the course of a voyage, is just as vital to space travel as a pilot, navigator, or engineering team.
@tmae3114
YESSSSS
Other reasons Shanties will experience a revival in the space age:
We will sing for any freaking reason, or no reason at all, and Shanties are FUN to sing.
Deep Space is a lonely place and recruiting people suited to long periods of isolation might be a good idea. Â People from Newfoundland/Labrador, for instance.
SPACE WHALES
THEYâRE DEFINITELY REAL I FEEL IT IN MY SOUL
âWhat Do We Do With A Drunken Sailorâ is basically a revenge fantasy against your most incompetent co-workers and if thereâs something humans love doing, itâs being petty.
@danbensen
I left my alter drifting In another quantum brane His eyes are sort of shifty But weâre otherwise the same
If the timeline branches one way Iâm alive and he is dead But if we go the other Then itâs me who croaked instead
So remember when when youâre sailing âPon the hyper spatial sea If your life you would preserve Do not trust the evil me.
^^^^^
so⌠i might have done a small recording because i love all of this.

When you think about it though the end of the world waas avoided for no other reason than Crowleyâs lovesick ass was so whipped that Aziraphale had to literally only threaten to not talk to him ever again and Crowley just. Stopped time. To pep talk Adam into telling his dad to fuck off. Because aint no asshole Lucifer gonna be the reason Crowley is sleeping on the proverbial couch for the foreseeable future, no sir.
crowley after six thousand years has all this patience and all this âyour pace, angelâ about him and he never says but itâs not out of his own self-preservation vis-a-vis the mortifying ordeal of being known (tho it is vis-a-vis his safety from hell, which weâve seen heâs willing to risk for aziraphaleâs sake - thatâs another post). he does it for aziraphaleâs. crowley is ready to be known, but he knows that aziraphale - with his faith, with his loyalties to heaven - isnât ready to know.Â
in a sense, crowley keeping quiet about the specifics of his feelings for aziraphale is another protective move in a long line of protective moves. crowleyâs silence protects aziraphaleâs status quo with regards to right and wrong v Right and Wrong as heaven denotes it, and instead crowley allows aziraphale the time and space to work up to challenging it himself. crowley lets aziraphale do it himself, he lets aziraphale come to those conclusions himself. and aziraphale does do this work! just very slowly. he agrees to the arrangement. he understands that he and crowley are in something that both heaven and hell would disapprove of. he doesnât want crowley to be able to destroy himself, and then he decides he trusts crowley enough to not destroy himself (thereby leaving aziraphale behind). he gets involved in the raising-warlock scheme and doesnât disclose every part of it to heaven. he goes slow - crowley sees that.Â
crowley allows him that. if the world werenât ending, crowley wouldâve waited even longer. but aziraphale is still clinging to heaven - he hasnât given up on that blind faith. he still wants heaven to be good. heâs giving heaven every chance to prove itself as good so he doesnât have to upset that status quo. Â
which is why it all blows up when crowley says he wants them to run off together. crowley canât give aziraphale any more time; there is no more time. crowley submits himself to the mortifying ordeal of being known in a last desperate attempt to get the reward of being loved, but aziraphale isnât ready to realign his worldview yet. he isnât ready to acknowledge all the things about heaven and about crowley that must be true for what crowley is saying to be true. aziraphale is in fact flat out startled, and because he isnât ready, he lashes out and rejects it. and actually, aziraphale in a very real sense has already betrayed crowley - he knows where the antichrist is and heâs already told heaven, and heâs lied to crowley about it. even though aziraphale wants heaven to do the same thing crowley wants - which is to stop the antichrist and the coming armageddon - he is keeping crowley out of it. heâs already put all his eggs in heavenâs basket, and then crowley shows up and submits himself, wholly and completely, to the mortifying ordeal of being known, and aziraphale basically goes, what the fuck what the fuck what the fuck what am I supposed to do with that. itâs no mistake that crowleyâs unforgivability v aziraphaleâs holiness is a part of the arc in this conversation - aziraphale is thinking about it, and crowley is deliberately telling him, you know me better than to define me by that. but how can crowley be right over heaven? only if heaven is wrong. aziraphale canât let go of that, not yet.
and for the first time really, crowley is storming away: heâs submitted himself, and aziraphale hasnât known him. heâs rejected him.
but crowley doesnât give up. he comes back: he submits again to the mortifying ordeal. aziraphale is listening to him. this is so important. aziraphale isnât rejecting him easily the second time. he tries to tell crowley - he tries to let crowley into his plan now, but it comes down to asking crowley to trust heaven, and crowley knows better. the conversation about crowleyâs forgivability comes back, and aziraphale is telling him that even if heaven wonât, i will, and thatâs what matters between them right then. but it isnât until aziraphale comes to the conclusions about heaven on his own in his conversation with the metatron that he fully understands what crowley was really telling him, and he understands. when aziraphale goes to the bar, he understands everything crowley is telling him, everything crowley has told him, and when he says âIâm sorry to hear thatâ in response to âI lost my best friend,â itâs what it says on the tin!! heâs sorry!! he didnât trust crowley and he should have!! heâs sorry for the rejection heâs sorry he didnât understand heâs sorry he betrayed crowley heâs sorry he let crowley leave.Â
and then he asks crowley for help. this isnât a skip by the apologies they need - this is direct action apology. aziraphale undoes his betrayal. he came to tell crowley where the antichrist is. he came to tell crowley how to stop him. they are back on plan-anti-antichrist. actually crowley says, âiâm not going there,â but heâs going to go where aziraphale is, and they both know it. aziraphale is saying, i believe you. i understand you. i know you. but thereâs one more step for them before they achieve the reward of being loved: they have to save the world, or it will all be over. aziraphale doesnât actually need crowley in order to do this, but he wants him there. this is aziraphaleâs alpha centauri, but we donât just save ourselves. weâre better than that. we save everyone. and crowley says, tell me where to go.Â
at that point, thereâs no longer any question that theyâre going to do whatever they have to, and theyâre going to do it together.Â
The way Michael Sheen delivers the line âto the worldâ is Too Much. Like who asked him to look at Crowley with the Softest, Warmest look before saying âto the worldâ in a voice overflowing with love because what he really means is âto usâ and âI love youâ and âIâm so glad the world didnât end and we have more time togetherâ and âyouâre my worldâ and I just. Iâm not okay.Â

Humans are Weird: Color Vision
So, I am learning about color perception in one of my classes, and it turns out the ability to see and understand color is more complex than we often think despite the limited range on the electromagnetic spectrum between 400-700 nanometers. So, I thought I would write a little story about how human color vision is weird.
The war with the Gnarâlack had reached a critical turning point. The Finnerian council was at its wits end. They were losing the war, and badly. The Unified Galactic Assembly had sent aid in the form of additional troops to supplement their own, but all efforts had been for not, and the assisting soldiers had been withdrawn home at the order of their home worlds.
The Finneri were on their own with no chance of aid left in the galaxy and their spirits broken. Soon the last transport ship would be sent off world with their children in an attempt to preserve their species.
The likelihood of which seemed slim.
General Lin-Ar was camped with what was left of his men along the southern polar border waiting for, what was likely to be, their last and final battle.
If this last ditch plan didnât work, they were doomed to extinction at the hand of their greatest enemy. The world would be overrun by the Gnarâlak and they would become only a memory in distant histories.
âGeneral?â The radio signal intercepted him on his posterior receptors, and he turned to face the speaker. Infrared and thermal sensors within his eyes picked up the spot as a glowing radiant beacon of heat.
        âCommander.â
        âAre we ready?â
        âWe have to be.â
The two turned themselves to the commandâs last interstellar communication tower and began the process.
        âWhat happens if none answer?â
âThen we give up our last hope.â There was a long silence as the two contemplated those words before
âHow do we know the stories are even true?â
General Lin-Ar paused to think about that for a moment. Truth be told he wasnât really sure if the stories were true. This far out on the border of the galaxy, stories of humans were still more myth than fact, but what other choice did he have. It he had to choose between a long shot and giving up, there was only one option.
        âSend the transmission.â
The commander gave a nod stepping up to the tower to input the message, and there they waited with bated breath. The infrared monitor on the far wall remained silent for a horrible moment before bursting into an array of blinding intensity.
The shape sitting there was so blinding, the cameras were having trouble adjusting to the signal.
âThis is Captain Vir of the USS Stabby responding to an urgent SOS from the planetâŚ. UhâŚ. GnfâŚ. I canât pronounce that.â
Relief washed over the general as he moved to the screen. The translator was working.
âSo the stories are true.â Came the static response.
âTrue and serious as a heart attack, GeneralâŚ. Anyway what can I do you for?â
The human spoke oddly. From what he heard they were supposed to be a barbaric and warlike race, but as far as he could tell the human was on the far side of nonthreatening even a little spacey. His hopes began to dwindle.
âWe are the Finneri, and we are close to extinction. For over millions of years we have been at war with the Gnarâlak. Despite all of our efforts, we have failed to hold them back. I represent what is left of my race begging you for assistance. You are our last hope.â
âWell S***, that does sound bad. I warn you, General. I represent only one ship. I donât know if there is much we can do.â
âIf all the stories I have heard are correct, than I would rather take that chance.â
âHmâŚ. Well, how could I say no to that? Give us a day.â The com went dead
General Lin-ar paused in confusion, âHe had expected a measure of resistance. Any race would have. To help a people on the brink of destruction against overwhelming odds was reason for concern, but the human had agreed almost out of hand recklessly agreeing to a suicide mission without knowing anything about the situation.
        Why would anyone do that?
What had they gotten themselves into?
Perhaps the quick agreement had just been a cultural construct. Maybe the humans would never show up, but personal discussion required that they agree in order to avoid offending. Only time would tell.
