“It’s digestible” is pertinent!! Okay, for those of you who haven’t researched Crisco for writing fic about gay sex in the mid-late 60s:
The first-edition of The Joy of Gay Sex, published in 1977, declared, “Vegetable shortening may be the best lubricant, since it is not only greasy but also digestible”[4] Such a statement perhaps gives new meaning to the companies boastful declarations that “Its digestible” and “Crisco has been making life in the kitchen more delicious for years.” Similarly, in the 1978 sex manual The Advocate Guide to Gay Health, Crisco even earned an entry in the book’s index. Discussions of the shortening’s use as an anal lubricant indicate its popularity, with statements such as: “The lubricant, typically the cultic Crisco, must be copious.”[5] In fact, Crisco was so synonomus with gay sex that discos and bars around the world took on the name, such as Crisco Disco in New York City, which was one of the premiere clubs during the 1970s and early 1980s. Other clubs or bathhouses, such as Club Z in Seattle, even featured murals with Crisco. Thus, Crisco was conversely also one of many things that led to the formation of gay identities during the 20th century.

Love the gay history, but i just wanna correct that the “it’s digestible” in the gay stuff was a reference to crisco’s tagline it had been using since 1911, the actual meaning of its digestible is because it’s main competition came from “enhanced” lards which were rendered pig fat mixed with non food thickeners that literally did not digest and caused people to basically just shit out pig cream, since crisco was veggie based the body digested it along with the food

Like 13 years late to the party but I watched bombay talkies and omg it is a well done tribute. I have not seen this level of sincerity from bollywood in the past years. The stories and direction everything was spot on. I loved how in the 3rd short film they chose Sheila ki Jawani as the song because I remember when this song came out and I was in 1st and I remember all of us living that song like a guilty pleasure because we weren't allowed to play that. It felt like bollywood really understood its impact for a second out there. I wish we could see stories like this now instead of the commercial crap that caters to no one

The thing with Julian being so pushy with the flirting and borderline obsessive about women and yet so damn awkward around them, in the first season, that is so annoying my friend is..
Compare how he is with Garak. Genuinely interested. Genuinely engaged. Relaxed. Confident. In charge almost. Flirty in a good way!
And then given what we learn about Julian much much later
I think this season 1 Julian is a man - a young man - who doesn’t really know what he wants or what he is but knows he’s got to try to behave normal. And somehow he’s learned that’s ‘flirt with women’ and he’s internalised it and is trying so hard - too hard. And it’s not working because at no point does he actually want to be behaving like this. Not really. He’s behaving the way he thinks he’s expected to behave. He’s trying to force himself into a box other people have built for him. And he’s trying to persuade himself he’s happy in that box. But he’s not real. That not him. And he’s very young still and awkward and so bad at social interactions…
Luckily he found himself on DS9, which has been pointed out, is a very queer place. He almost immediately met Garak and I think a lot of his journey on DS9 is one of self-acceptance and self-discovery
The problem is showing S1 Julian to someone who doesn’t know anything and trying to explain ‘yes, I love this character but you’re just going to have to wait to find out why’
I imagine if you took pride in your achievements believing they were the product of hard work only to find out at 15 that all your talent was built on a lie it would take all the joy out of most victories. Like competitive tennis, for example. At least if you were a doctor, your victories would provide material benefit to other people, which would make them meaningful regardless of the honesty behind how you attained your skills.
