I have such complex feelings about Lene Kostana. She repeatedly made children interact with the dark side, repeatedly put her padawan in dangerous situations, and repeatedly REFUSED to get help when her former padawan's condition grew much too severe. Instead she made these children her accomplices, begged for their silence, and continued to use her padawan even when he grew up. Like there is something to say about her guilt in accidentally opening Sifo-Dyas up to his visions, but in all honesty, he shouldnt have been in that situation in the first place! And she certainly shouldnt have been able to keep raising him after she ENCOURAGED the visions and didn't try to stop them. Her padawan actively suffered and began to lose his mind and she would NOT ask for help. Instead she lied and asked other children to lie and continued to use Sifo for his visions and powers. And I do believe she cared for Sifo! I just also think she couldn't pass up the opportunity to use him to further her research and goals. So, do I think Lene was some mastermind, deliberately engineering the accident and driving a wedge between Sifo and Dooku to isolate and manipulate him? No. But do I think she saw a child who looked up to her, and took advantage of that maleability so he would aid her on her borderline illegal missions? Do I think she loved Sifo, but also used his vulnerability to keep him around as an asset for her own goals? Yes!

#most insane part about her in the book is that you have to read between the lines to get like half of this #since its told in the perspective of someone who admires her #and someone who is a child for most the of the book #so you also here so many of her justifications for this behavior #Lene belives her work is vital to the survival of the Jedi and the Republic #no one else believes that the sith will return #so the duty falls to her to prepare #she thinks she HAS to do this because no one will #how will the jedi survive this rising threat?#how will the galaxy survive?#and what is the life of a boy in comparison to that of the whole galaxy?#and the worse part is #was she not right?#the sith returned after all #and sifo-dyas continues her work by ordering the clones #and uses the same justification #oh lene kostana the character you are #lene kostana #sifo dyas #count dooku #dooku: jedi lost #dooku jedi lost #star wars #sifo-dyas #yan dooku

I think there's something to be said for how Eli's time in the Ascendancy neatly mirrors what was likely Thrawn's experience when he first came to the empire. (Far from home, surrounded by people that are alien to you, getting dropped in an entirely new social structure and political game that you do not know the rules of, isolated from any social connection by both your own alienness and the culture gap) And following that train of thought, it's easy to see why Eli would desperately latch on to the one social connection he has (Thrawn) like it's a life raft. It's a parallel to the way Thrawn latched on to him, back when they first met.

But every once in a while he has one of his lusting-over-Thrawn moments and I just have to go jesus christ Eli please calm down
