one thing that does often actually genuinely break my heart about aromanticism is that it opens so many ontological pathways to methodologies that would unilaterally improve people's lives but most people can't even be bothered to learn about aromanticism much less apply those lessons to themselves
being aromantic (and being aspec in general) prompts you to unlearn the thought that a romantic relationship is going to fulfill you in a way that nothing else can. to unlearn that your worth is tied to your desirability. to unlearn that your life is defined by love. it prompts you to restructure your relationships. to reevaluate the ways in which the people around you contribute to your life and the ways in which you want to engage with them. it shows you that everything we know about relationships is defined by social constructs that don't need to be heeded. it opens you to a life of such blissful freedom and i feel such a sense of grief for the way that this information never seems to get beyond us
An age-old question aroaces get both from the outside and from personal doubts is “how can being aroace be about anything other than a lack? sure you have platonic bonds but allo people can have those too”
I used to compare this to how black and white photography has its own beauty you can appreciate on its own terms, but I’m feeling that less these days. It’s more like being able to see the stars without light pollution.
The stars are still there, but if you’re caught up in society’s amatonormativity and suffocating relationship structures you may never experience their full beauty. City lights have their own beauty, but they can choke out things you’re starved for beyond them.

One of the key reasons I think about Kemutai Hanashi SO MUCH is because I genially cannot comprehend it actually EXISTS.
Like what do you mean there is a slice of life manga which is both comforting and gut-wrenching. It's also so freaking thought-out, like everything means something. Space means something, flowers mean something, no line is wasted, every scene or thought or dialogue connects to some overarcing theme, so many metaphors...
Also did I mention it's the most aroace thing I've ever read? Like what do you mean it's not said upright in a "I've never fallen in love lol" way but rather in a "mom no I don't like guys and I don't know if he does but either way it's literally not important!!!!!!!!! why are you making such a deal out of it" way.
And what do you mean not just the central relationship is weird and unfit and cannot be put into neat little box people will like(which is already huge), actually EVERY relationship here is like that?? These high school girl best friends have something weird gong on. Oh, this straight couple? People don't get them either!! And these other straight people too - that's their deal?
Also the author just said "oh by the way these two are not going to be normal about each other ever", so we have "you turn my world upside down" and "you are the only person who can understand me" and "you are the one I want to spent the entirety of my life with" and "I don't want it and I don't like it but I will do it if that's for you" which flabbergasts me because most of time these kinds of sentiments are reserved for romance, BUT NOT HERE. Like YESSSS FINALLY I CAN TEAR MY HAIR OUT AND PACE AROUND THE ROOM BECAUSE OF A NOT ROMANTIC NOT PLATONIC BUT A THIRD THING KIND OF RELATIONSHIP!!!!!!!

Sakuko is aroace fearlessness. I love watching how happily she connects with people and enjoys life and delights in things big and small. The whole world is her friend and she brings joy to everything. Her heart is so big.

i am rewatching koisenu futari right now, and i'm on episode two, struck again by how effortlessly this episode swings between a comedy of errors and an emotional gut-punch.
one thing i didn't quite register consciously before is that, when sakuko's family are very cheerfully telling her and takahashi that now they can start a "normal" family together, this isn't just in reference to the romance aspect; this is also directly after takahashi explains to them that he does not have parents.
they're extremely troubled by that fact, and yes, it is sort of a sad thing to bring up, and as a repeat viewer i know that takahashi has very complicated feelings on family in part because of that abandonment; but he assures them that it wasn't actually all that painful because his grandmother raised him with love, so he was happy.
that's when sakuko walks in, and they start waxing poetic about how finally they can have a Normal Family together, implying that not only would their actual arrangement as platonic housemates be abnormal, but takahashi's childhood and his entire life up to this point wasn't normal either. it paints having been raised by his grandmother instead of in a nuclear family unit with two parents as inherently tragic, broken, inferior, or strange, even though he was quite happy with just her.
the way this show neatly weaves together all of these complicated issues of family and values, all while this crab-centric aro comedy is playing out as the basic plot of the episode, is fantastic.
"At first, I didn't think we could be family without involving romantic feelings. But now, I feel like I can do it. So I don't want to feel lonely anymore."
