Flight feathers and a thing called Hope
Back again on my cloho wings kick, now with added ship :D
Some more Gathie wings!
Mordecestershire: osprey, because their wings make an M when they fly or dive, known as fish hawks
Diaz: storm petrel
Polaximus: barn owl
Dame Zaparano: alpine swift
Dame Diamante: house martin
Plus Torsewell, because I'm just throwing snippets to the wind:
Because flight is frowned upon by the upperclass, Maxwell can't actually fly that well. Body muscle can be cleverly concealed by a well-tailored suit, but flight-capable wing muscle bulk is immediately visible.
Revington Flight Club members exchanged the secret arts of aerial buffeting with grappling and take-down maneuvers, but only in short bursts. Therefore, Maxwell doesn't have the wing strength for sustained flight. This is not a problem until he's suddenly on an airship, jumping between /other/ airships and risking his life because he can't actually fly properly.
Enter Torse, who offers to help Maxwell train his wing strength by being his anchor/lift weight. Stood at the prow of the ship in a mix of the jack/rose titanic scene and httyr toothless wind resistance training in the first movie.
Torse, holding Maxwell's arms, wind at his back, looking at this human warrior with wide wings stretched to fill his field of vision, silhoutted against by the golden light of sunrise. Watching the shirtless, powerful muscles rippling with effort as astonishingly silent wings beat, sending buffets of air swirling around them.
At first, Torse keeps Maxwell grounded, keeps him from being carried away by the high atmosphere winds.
Eventually though, after weeks of hard training (around the time of looking for Mt Charuk)... powerful wings curve and flex, Maxwell's grip firms around Torse's forearms and he begins to /lift/...
Slowly, wonderously, lifting Torse into the air to greet the cresting light of dawn.
And Torse, who's wings are blades unfit for this function, who for so long has known only ash and shadow, looks to this warrior who grins with golden triumph, having worked far beyond the limits of his flesh to lift himself skyward and further still to bring his companion cloudwad ho... Torse stretches out his unwieldy wings, joints creaking from disuse, and catches the wind to glide on metal feathers, feels a swell of something bright rising within him. An ephemeral flutter, perching on his soul, singing a wordless music that could only be Hope.
Also, my man Maxwell desperately needs that protein for his gains, please help him, he needs to be able to fly off into the sunset of Zern with his cast iron boyfriend. Aioli just don't got the grams :(
Furthermore! Mechanical wingsuit supports are still cheating! Winged flight should be earned from one's own effort! So sayeth Maxwell Gotch.
Cloudward Wings
Hello, I am once again giving people bird wings! Yet another concept I'm probably never going to write :D
So the rough premise of this would be that only Gath has winged people, but the Queen's Smog limits safe breathing altitude, discouraging flight. Plus the crowded population centres and regular exercise needed for the strength and skill to fly, most kids stop flying as teenagers and then can't as adults. Slow trait loss (and gene input from biangle-displaced Zoodians) means some people don't have wing at all.
Socially, flying requires physical effort and therefore is not respectable. The upperclass do not want to sweat when they can throw around money to get a cushioned seat on a locomotive instead. Therefore no one else should want to fly either.
There's a strong push in Eisengeist/the CIR for mechanical wing supports to do the work instead of muscles... a soft launch for full mechanical wing replacement initiative- running off widow's breath of course.
(Revington has a secret Flight Club that opperates at night, in addition to the Fight Club underground fighting pits for gentleman fisting. There is a surprising overlap between people wanting to tackle each other on mats and tackle each other out of the sky. For the mutually agreed adrenaline rush, of course. Combat hugs are just grapple training.)
Zephyr Crew & Associates
Comfrey: woodpecker finch, renowned for tool use. Wings got damaged on one adventure or another, so can now barely glide. Not paticularly strong to begin with, always yearned to fly higher than they could take her.
Daisuke: peregrine falcon, speed hunter with phenomenal eyesight.
Monty: greater honeyguide. Gives Guidance *flute music*.
Van: none
Marya: crow, highly intelligent and urban adaptive, plots navigation route as the crow flies.
Olethra: kea, the only alpine parrot, renowned mischief maker.
Ludmilla: eurasian magpie, highly intelligent and social, lover of tools and shinies.
Bert: ringed plover, small coastal wading bird, highly effective forager.
Dawderdale: bat hawk, always looks worried.
Torse: inspired by Polish winged hussar armour, not actually flight capable, but can extend out to glide slightly. Bladed feathers can slot together to form stronger daggers like chainsaw teeth.
Assorted Gotch Flock
Cadswitch: great horned owl, with dramatic ear tufts and a grip strength 3-5 times stronger than human.
Longspot: acorn woodpecker, renowned for greed in gathering an endless acorn lader in home trees.
Samwell: eurasian jay, a species practicing cooperative breeding- where a grown chick helps raise their parent's next clutch instead of breeding themselves. A nest helper. Has a rebellious blue flash.
Blane/Brycewell: bullfinch, shy and stocky birds with pink-red breasts, partial to fruit bud delicacies.
Roywell: pheasant, an absolute fool.
Hatwell: shoebill stork, ugly as sin with the thickest beak alive but not skull. Presumably vulnerable to piercing damage.
Wealwell: secretary bird, the sexiest stander in the bird world. Stomps snakes to death. The only bird that hunts on foot, despite being able to fly.
Johnwell: wood pigeon, another fool. Largest UK pigeon, feathers may outweight skeleton. Flight is described as a clatter. Will run into all windows at speed at all times.
Maxwell: eagle owl, visually similar to great horned owl but larger, with dramatic ear tufts and grip strength 10 times greater than human.
Beasts & Biangles
Hi, so im on a d20 kick at the moment and the background magic of cloudward ho has me by the throat :D
So the Ramansu station crystals were yellow, blue and pink from a central green focus and as Straka energy is red and Van's Jazzy Tazzy energy was lunar-adjacent, the crystals are probably diluted power shown in lighter shades. The green energy is later assiged to Gath. There are naturally occuring high concentration flares of these energies called biangles.
So there's the biangles:
Effulgent: solar enegy, yellow/white, into Zood
Obtenebrant: lunar energy, blue/black, into Shahar
Calefactory: mechanical fire, pink/red, into Zern
Green??? Into Gath???
Now the eldritch extradimensional beasts:
Sun lion: presumably Effulgent light energy, Zood
Tazg'agwa: psychic cephalopod, Obtenebrant lunar energy, Shahar
Straka: furnace crow, Calefactory metal fire, Zern
GREEN??? GATH???
Zood and Zern share an atmosphere, but Gath has an absolute void after atmosphere, while Jazzy Tazzy swims in Shahar- a sea of stars and space-time??? Seems like an 'equal and opposite' deal for Zood-Zern and maybe Gath-Shahar. But thay're also all linked by biangles. And the sun-moon duality of the Zood-Sharah Sun lion & Squidtopus means Zern-Gath are probably linked, especially as Gath is a Steampunk/Gaslamp setting.
Which if the hints about Widow's breath and green Queen's Smog mean anything... with parallels to Zern being burnt out by trapping the 'destructive' Calefactory energy there...
Opposite of fire that's not water? Lightning. Red mechanical fire and green electricity.
Gathi biangle:
Voltaic: electrical energy
Gathi beast:
A crystal deer. Quartz is a piezoelectric crystal that produces charge under mechanical stress. Electricity arching between a huge rack of antlers like tesla coils. Maybe Gath is the only place that regularly gets lightning. Who knows.
(Probably Monty LaMontgommery. And Comfrey. Who probably did something to put the Gathi electric stag in a similar situation as Katur-Tazzy with widow's breath... to keep Straka out of Gath???... which DeadspotGotch was doing deals about and Max & Monty are onto next for fixing.)
A/B/O Wing-AU Worldbuilding
Hey-ho, some of my worldbuilding ramblings chewing up tropes for fun and intrigue! AU summary: A/B/O world with magic-assisted wings and sentinel/guide elements thrown in for flavour.
What if instead of the trope-typical wolfpack structure followed orcas: matrilineal, led by non-reproductive females to pass on experience and knowledge. Omegas are generally the ones having the kids, so they'll want to be in the centre/heart/capitol of the territory, surrounded by pack and resources for safety. The perfect position to advance learning and co-ordinate forces from.
Wings: every human has enough passive magic to 'put away' wings into a pocket dimension/different plane. Vanish them by magic. This auto-cleans and dries them to prevent foreign contaminants, but doesn't sort feathers, so preening is required. Process is hindered by injury. Bringing out/putting away wings through damaged skin will significantly worsen the injury (eg. a deep scratch into a cut needing stitches). Bleeding wounds keep wings trapped in until healed, can be forced out but worsens wound significantly and can’t return.
Magic: passive magic for wing storage and flight assistance. Potential minority of people with more active magic ability to manipulate wind currents. Boost their own flight and/or knock others out of the air. Species of bird-wing are soul-reflective, not inherited, though dynamic has a strong influence,
Societal impact: People learn to fly like swimming, running and bike riding in schools, but don't typically fly day-to-day, especially in cities. Beds/nests are banked semi-circles for wing-extension sleeping, so are luxury baths for soaking. Fashions vary about backless clothing, most people keep wings tucked away unless looking to impress others. Makeup trends for the dating scene are bold full-face designs traditionally reflective of soul-wing species.
Dynamic roles:
*A/B/O dynamics can be neatly linked with occupational sectors: primary, secondary and tertiary and split between the four scent groups.
Floral & Fresh: omega, female beta. Refreshing, relaxing, sweet, bright (eg. rose, jasmine, rosemary, citrus)
Woody & Amber: alpha, male beta. Seductive, grounding, rich, dark (eg. vetiver, sandalwood, cardamom, cinnamon)
Omega
Leader/Nurturer
Tertiary sector: service, teaching, educated, managerial.
Phenotype: small, slender, agile.
Wings: Typically bright and eye-catching colours, desirable features of iridescence, colour variety and/or patterns (eg. violet-green swallow, blue jay, european bee-eater). Regardless of soul-species, omega wings have greater shoulder joint rotation and double-jointed wing elbows, for more maneuverability in evasion and in-flight mating. No claws or spurs.
Zone-out: mild empahtic ability, passive emotional perception. Can become lost in empathy, projecting an emotion field, disassociated from body. Physical touch is best (cuddles!), with scents and sensation drawing back into body awareness. Alphas are best for it as highly physically grounded, acting as anchors, while betas or omegas risk getting swept up in psychic/emotional field.
Considered most valuable dynamic and rarest. Expected to pursue advanced education, managerial positions and form/lead groups. Social shift from having lots of kids to one blood heir and overseeing flock children.
Most scent sensitive/ empathic, social priority
Beta
Craftsmen/Caretaker
Secondary sector: manufacturers, craftsmen, textiles, resourceful,
Phenotype: tall, slender, dexterous hands. Less defined than O/A.
Wings: Betas have wing claws; two prehensile digits at each wing elbow (eg. Hoatzin chicks or extinct Microraptor).
Zone: less likely to occur, but can go either way. Less emotionally reactive than omegas ad alphas.
Considered most useful and versatile in modern society, the primary dynamic demographic. Traditionally defer to O and A, but socially rank above alphas in modern times.
Alpha
Warrior/Defender
Primary sector: labourers, advanced body strength and endurance.
Phenotype: tall, broad, developed canine teeth/fangs, enhanced senses for hunting, guarding and combat.
Wings: most commonly raptor/predatory bird wings. All alphas have wing spurs; a bone spike with keratin sheath at each wing elbow (eg. Masked Lapwing). Presumably for combat and to impress females/omegas, large wingspan desired.
Zone-in: enhanced senses (sentinel-abilities) causing hightened sensory overload, over-awareness of physical body and sensory input, can be best drawn out of it by omega scent and empathic ability (guide-abilities). Flock/trusted individuals are more effective than strangers, with Omega > Beta > Alpha. Modified falconry hoods common for alpha de-stressing.
Considered brutish, aggressive and the most disposable. Formerly the primary dynamic in a population but becoming obsolete in a civilized age. Demographic shift driven by Alpha-conscription in war decreasing selection pool for reproduction.
Pack/Flock-driven, most socially/bond dependent.
Reproduction
Traditionally/biological history/prehistoric dynamic: one omega would flock with multiple alphas and betas. Omegas would lay eggs for betas/alphas to incubate, alphas young egg and territory, betas childrearing until of age for omegas to integrate into flock function/work. A/B/O male seahorsing it.
Courtship: omegas have flashy colours to attract mates and socail power to choose to accept/reject alpha and beta courtship competition. Wing-fluttering signifies interest, dancing is also popular during courtship. Omegas flutter and flash their colours to signal interest and invite courting, social pressure against an alpha refusing omega invitation. Archaic: aerial flight-chase before mating
Eggs: No periods, regardless of gender or dynamic. No uterus lining to shed, instead specialised cells & excretions to form shell. Lay soft shelled eggs that harden on contact with oxygen, after laying.
Spring ‘breeding season’: increased fertility and horniness, individuals may experience brief Heat/Rut, 3 days average. No biological imperative to mate (or maybe just limited to extreme hormonal imbalance, for a guilty pleasure FOD scenario).
Low fertility to transient sterility in biological alpha women and omega men outside of season.
Feathers & preening
Social preening, communal activity within flocks to strengthen bonds, particularly during feather molting.
Synthetic oils used in modern times, using oil from uropygial/oil glands on wings is highly intimate (due to heavy scent concentration) and typically reserved for bonded mates.
Other feathers: when wings are out, other small downy feathers may appear on chest, nape and tops of shoulders, varying by person. Rarely large or in hair or face, sometimes on arms or legs.
Wing decoration: trend shifts of dyes, glitters and jewelry for feather decoration. eg. iridescent glitter on flight feathers, delicate hanging chains with jewels/charms (trend to court by gifting charms/crystal pendants) to emphasise omega rotation capacity, shiny rings on beta claws, spur-sheaths on alphas like ceremonial dagger sheaths, shiny metal covers to look bigger/sharper.
Most alphas wear spur-covers when wings are out to look less intimidating.

AU TLH: The Champion of Hera
Synopsis (Part 1/2)
In Jason's perspective throughout. More consciously analytical than Percy, actively evaluated body language and nuance in the people around him. Has enhanced sense of smell.
Waking up: Jason opens his eyes to empty blue sky, laid out like a corpse on rough orange stone, a pristine peacock feather held between hands folded on his chest. Getting up, he wore a rich purple tunic embroidered with an eagle and a wreath in gold thread. Jeans and leather sandal/shoes, flexible for good running grip, he notes as he rolls up into a defensive crouch, turning to face the voice that woke him. Its (Leo) a short boy with dark curly hair, oddly pointed ears and soot on his fingertips and clothes. No visible weapons or body language reaching for one, but a lump of a necklace pendant of some sort under his shirt. He says 'I'm like you' and that he just wanted to see if he was okay. Jason knows that he's lying (wolf nose/Lupa blessing, similar to Reyna's dogs lie detector ability). His eyes catch the light strangely, almost like there's fire inside them not just sunlight reflecting off them. He smells of metal and smoke, almost choked out by a cloying artificial perfume.
He warily goes with Leo on the promise of food and water, infiltrates the fieldtrip group. Led over to a girl on the edge of the group pretending to check her nails while sniping back at a clique of weak, meanly sniggering girls. She also looked like a civillian at first glance, with a jean jacket covered in sharpie scribbles, a plaid skirt and black tights with large diamond patterns like an adder's back, but her combat boots are tightly laced and she holds herself tense and ready for a fight, even as she projects nonchalance. When the group turn away, she moves towarsd them. She is beautiful, but the deliberately messy cuts in her hair and the dark liner around her eyes makes his attention slip away from her features almost before he'd registered them, drawn instead into half-lidded eyes sublty shifting colours every time he blinked. A sharp, asssessing gaze half hidden, scanning him up and down and recognising something, stopping with a shoulder half infront of Leo, subtly protecting him.
A hushed conversation, Jason has no memory. 'But you're a demigod' Leo notes and that is a familiar fact. 'You can fight' a quiet certainty from Piper, still not relaxed. 'So can you' he replied. he jolted slightly, but nodded slowly, 'I had a friend who taught me some things, but that's all'. A lie. He didn't know how he knew, but this girl had seen combat. He suddenly noticed that her clothes looked impractical typical of fashion, but they covered her skin entirely. He'd bet that she had more muscle and scars hidden away than any untried civillian should. It unsettled him, that she'd been stood right in front of him but hidden herself so well his instincts had almost been overidden by her facade. What was worse, was now that he was paying attention, he realised that without looking directly at her, he couldn't picture her face, features blurring and irises shifting into nondescipt. Fake flowers covered her entirely, so he wouldn't be able to track her by scent. A change of clothes, a different perfume and she could walk right by him and he wouldn't know her.
Leo suggests going to Coach Hedge, says he thinks he might know something, Jason notices he's distracted, keeps glancing off to the side of the Grand Canyon viewing platform, eyes flitting around, and frowning. A prey-like danger sense. Finds Coach Hedge when pointed out, who has the same expression, then notices them, darkens and begins stomping over. Storm spirit fight. Dylan & Co call a herd of horse-shaped storm spirits to kill/abduct them. Jason uses wind manipulation to control which side the coin lands for sword/spear.
Fight happens, Hedge abducted, Jason saves Piper and last remaining storm horses driven off by pegasus-drawn war chariot, driven by a sharp, hardened warrior. Annabeth. Had recieved a Iris message from Hedge on the scent of god-work when they arrived at Grand Canyon, requesting pick-up for the two demigods in his care, Leo & Piper.
Camp Half-Blood: in the middle of technological revolution from the plans on Daedalus' laptop. Reinforcing barrier-line with magi-tech hologram fortification walls, adapted from ancient greek city-state defences. Additional protection if something happens to Thalia's tree again or the Golden Fleece is damaged/stole etc.
Orientation video, updated from original after the Second Titan War and the Oath of Olympus to Claim their kids. Triggers memory of Mt. Othrys siege with demigods in purple with gold weapons, himself fighting a dark figure wearing star-armour. Recording started by Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase, handed off to different Cabin counselors of main 12 Olympian while touring CHB map and locations. The Annabeth in the video looked happier and healthier than the one stood outsie the door.
Jason claimed immediately on landing. Leo and Piper not, Jason picks up on a concealed fear/anxiety from both of them, offers for them to come burn offerings with him. Leo sacrifices more than half his meal, eyes scrunched closed, half caught murmus of please, please, then claimed as Hephaestus, to immense relief. Piper, in the distraction, throws a scuffed pink metal wrist guard in, previously hidden under long jacket sleeves, hands shaking. After a long moment is claimed as well.
After food, Jason and Chiron talk. Goddess hijacks the convo ordering his service, afterwards, he's left holding another peacock feather. As evening arrives, he goes out into the woods to get away from the crowd and uneasy sense that he doesn't belong. Woods feel like home, almost more familiar than the sword he'd used in combat. Catches scent of metal, fire and fake flowers, track it to Leo with malfunctioning Festus.
Spend a few days at Camp, finding bearings.
Quest: Rachel moving around the campfire with glowing green eyes in fugue state, selects Jason, Piper, Annabeth and Leo for quest to free chained goddess and find what they each seek. Arguments of traditon of 3 to a quest, 4 demigods too dangerous... Jason sees Leo shifting nervously. (No one knows he's not a demigod).
PART 1/2
AU SoN: The Champion of Neptune
Synopsis
In Percy's perspective throughout.
Waking up: Perseus wakes up surrounded by snarling wolves with no memory of himself, brief combat full of raw instinct, pulling out a sword he recognised not by name but in the feel of the ocean, a flash of a dark-eyed girl dressed in silver and the resolve to be better. In the momentary distraction, a wolf lands a bite on his arm, but its teeth just scate off with a scatter of pale golden sparks like struck metal and a faint sensation of pressure.
Going to Camp: Skip forward and he's on the move to New Rome, having completed Lupa's training and earned her begrudging respect. Tires quickly from the 'Cursed Styx-water' Lupa said he'd been doused in, consumed ambrosia and drinks nectar in equal parts as water to stay awake and moving. It also keeps him thrumming with almost-feverish warmth.
Parallels to Thalia being chased to CHB, picks up a horde of unkillable mosters in pursuit. Gorgon sisters, a lost of snakes (such as Jaculus, Prester and Haemorrhois), Alecto/Mrs Dodds (who blames him for Hades/Pluto incapacitation by mixing Camps into conflict) & cyclopses, wich causes memory-headaches.
Juno gives the same ultimatum of running to the sea for safety or going to Rome and sacrificing, suffering and regaining memory. Instead of River Tiber washing away the Curse it errodes away his mortality, Juno making white water lilies grow and tangle around his legs while she gets increasingly heavier. Cross between her sacred white lilies & lotus and water-association indicating Neptune. Leaves Percy with more grey in his hair and wearing a wreath of white flowers, a mark of favour and a warning in one.
(Dichotomy between Percy and Frank: both of sea-blooded with white hair marking mortal life lost, but bringing Percy closer to godhood and Frank closer to death. A product of willing sacrifice and a hereditary curse framed like a gift.)
Following cannon with recommendation fiasco, but additional powerplay of Frank trying to use his family/social standing to support Hazel's position only to be undermined by Octavian. If Gwen had not stepped in, alternative route for outsider-intake is the lower social caste of 'Servitor', a servant/labourer for the Legion rather than a soldier.
Camp Percy-ception: wary & fearfully respectful. Neptune is a bad omen, but too powerful to dare disrespect, especially to a first-gen demigod. Immediately induct him as a priest to Neptune, gives understanding of Octavian's power as Augur. After War Games, rumours stir of Perseus being a sea-god turned mortal, sent as a Test for CJ and to complete a Task. Blessed by Neptune with iron skin like Caeneus of myth.
(Dichotomy between Percy and Jason. Percy a 'Flamen Neptunalis', a minor priest/ flamen, head of his temple by default. While Jason was a 'Flamen Dialis', the most prestigious of all priests and one of three flamines maiores, who were of patrician rank, who then became a pontifex rather than lead the temple. Both 'Big Three' gods but one of an abandonned, avoided, near-disrepair temple while the other the largest and most esteemed, visited and worshiped in Rome. The position helped Jason become Praetor, but Octavian may use the same to hinder Percy being legitmised after being raised on shields.)
Quest: Lets say about 2 months after Percy arrival? Quest is given, Octavian social power on full display, plays on rumours of Perseus-divinity to give no aid. Reyna beats him to it and claims the service of Perseus to assist Frank in returning the Eagle Standard to the Legion as his Task, even though she knows he's not a god.
Travel: Fight monsters to point of ruthless destruction, Percy can disperse dust in water, Hazel can crush underground, Frank feeling inadequate. Traveling through a town, encounter Lemures (restless spirits, cause nightmares). Percy, Hazel and Frank get pulled collectively into watching their worst memories together.
Percy: Battle of Manhattan, the point where Pandora's Pythos appeared and he almost gave up hope, surrounded by evidence of war, Annabeth poisoned, warriors in orange with bronze swords like his wounded and exhausted behind him while he alone remained untouched.
Hazel: dying in her mother's arms to prevent the rise of Gaia, being shown the life she lost, smiling in a wedding dress marrying a blurred-faced man and her best friend Sammy on her other side as her bridesman, choosing Asphodel over Elysium to save her mother from Punishment, Nico pulling her out though he was looking for a different sister.
Frank: Hearing the news of his mother's death, his last memory of her with hair more grey than black despite her age, worry lines around her eyes as she left to try restoring their family honour to lift the curse. She left to war for his sake and was killed for it. Being sent to the Wolf House and almost being eaten by Lupa for the weaknesses from being too mortal. Shapeshifting for the first time, desperate to prove himself, turning into a wolf. A thin streak of grey in his hair when he turned back scaring him to his core.
From priest training, knows a rite to perform to appease them/send them on, Hazel and Frank help.
Alaska: follows mostly the same, but Percy exhausts himself much easier so the others guard him while asleep, Frank knows how to shapeshift but it burns his stick-life force each time and puts white streaks in his hair, so he has to uses it sparingly/strategically. Hazel has no flashbacks, but has phobia of cold water from drowning and disassociates from her living body from having spent so long dead.
Thanatos: The Styx-ice chains almost rip Hazel's soul out and freezes her to them, Frank burns life to free her and melt the chains, breaking them and Hazel's Curse.
From temple training, Percy gains understanding of Roman-Greek god divide, so after Thanatos is freed from chains he deliberately invokes his Roman for Letus as a more warlike god, using the tribute of the Ghost Legion souls to ask for aid with killing the Giant Alceonyus.
Return to Legion bearing gold, defeat Polybotes, Percy is raised on shields to become Praetor. Two weeks later, message comes from CHB, one month deliberation delay between that and Argo II arrival. End Book 2.
Class in New Rome & 12th Legion
So this is a mix of scattered research and artistic license, because I am not a historian, but want more complexity to New Rome, Camp Jupiter and especially the Roman Legion.
Gods & demigods
Gods: The Roman gods are much more absent than the Greek. The chose champions and give blessings rather than walking the mortal plane and having kids, so first-gen demigods are extremely rare.
Greek-Roman strength divide: Greek demigods are typically first-gen, so individually much more powerful combatants, but Romans have numbers and cohesive strategy to exploit that.
First gen demigod perception: fear and awe of inhuman baseline abilities in strength, endurance and reflexes. Considered more savage than sophisticated due to raw combat abilities, ADHD and dyslexia/reading problems.
Worship
Worship: In ancient Rome, priests were trained through Colleges: Pontiffs, Augurs, Quindecimviri Sacris Faciundis and Epulones. Individuals could be members of multiple colleges.
College of Pontiffs (Collegium Pontificum): This was the most important priesthood in Rome, headed by the Pontifex Maximus, the 'bridge-builder' between mortal and divine. The pontiffs were responsible for state religion, overseeing rituals, maintaining religious law, and advising the state on religious matters.Â
College of Augurs (Collegium Augurum): Interpreting omens.
College of Quindecimviri Sacris Faciundis: Interpreting the Sibylline Books, supervising outsider cults and religious practices.
College of Epulones: organizing and overseeing public banquets (epulum) held in honor of the gods.Â
Pontiff Priests: Flamines are priests dedicated to the service of a specific god. A specific category of flamines are: the flamines maiores (major priests) and flamines mainores (minor priests). The Flamen across deities were overseen by the pontifex, who were headed by the Pontifex Maximus. A pontifex could temporarily fill in for a flamen, but only the Pontifex Maximus could fill in for the Flamen Dialis in Jupiter's temple. The Pontifex Maximus can also only be chosen by other priests through vote.
Political sabotage: The flamen was a sacred position within Roman society; however, certain people could be appointed as flamines to stop them from gaining power. They were sometimes not permitted to run or hold a political office. For the purpose of New Rome, this is limited to heads of temples, with exceptions made for being raised on shields in battle for praetor. Jason became a pontifex instead of temple head to avoid being pigeonholed by Octavian.
Flamines maiores: Jupiter (Flamen Dialis), Mars (Flamen Martialis), Quirinus (Flamen Quirinalis).
Flamines minores: The twelve flamines were dedicated to Carmenta, Ceres, Falacer, Flora, Furrina, Palatua, Pomona, Portunus, Vulcan, Volturnus and two unkown deities.
Priests dedicated to other gods were also called flamens, but not held within maiores or minores titles and therefore of lesser prestige.
Ritual prohibition: F.Dialis had the most extensive and strict probihitions, but others are more common and widespread, such as prohibition from touching a horse, goat or foods such as leavened bread, all of which are associated with the Underworld. (A Percy-specific exception could be the pegasus, as a creature created by Neptune, which would allow a Blackjack appearance, or just extend that to Arion as a demigod horse-child of Neptune and Ceres).
Class
Social classes: Patrician (upper class, lineage, political power, wealth), Equite (middle class, 'knights', militry men, merchants, some political influence), Plebian (commoner, artisans, merchants), Servitor (historically slaves and freedmen, but I've made up a different term and pretended like a thousand odd years would bring about some social development. Farmers and labourers shifted from plebian to here socially).
First gen demigods often afforded equite class to not offend their divine parent, opportunity to amass wealth/influence enough to pass the rank down to children.
Fawns
In cannon, have terrible social tanding. This could be explored as a combination of things, like social stigma/perception of 'unclean' and 'Underworld' affiliation relating to flamens prohibition from touching goats. Roman priority on urbanisation and loss of wild spaces making fawns outcasts and deemed unnecessary (where at CHB integrated into camp function on strawberry fields). Without local purpose (no searching for Pan or demigods due to Roamn isolationism and Lupa's Wolf House, or guarding/growing the wild spaces), many fawns have faded and the population diminished. Especially after Pan faded.
Improve situation by unionising the fawns (similar to Council of Cloven Elders), relearnign nature magic and applying it to the agriculture and horticulture of New Rome. Crop fields, orchards, fruit and flower gardens, improve river ecology of the Little Tiber and any nearby lakes/water sources to improve water quality in the aquaducts and the sewage treatment system. So I've been having a lot of thoughts about HoO characters that I'm never going to get around to Actually Writing, so here we go:
The 7 demigods of prophecy being an uneven mix of Greek and Roman annoyed me, so here we have:
Greek: Percy, Annabeth, Piper
Roman: Jason, Hazel, Frank
Nonhuman: Leo
GREEK
PERCY
The Ascendant Godling.
His character arc is him unknowingly becoming a god, slowly drifting away from the mortal perspective, burning up his mortality faster and faster, sacrificing the last of it to strike the finishing blow to Gaea.
Keeps the Achilles Curse and we get to see it acting as a curse, how it cripples his stamina outside of active combat with adrenaline to keep him going. Needs so much more sleep and food, but while on the streets takes ambrosia/nectar to keep awake and moving. Amounts that would kill any other demigod, that he would never take if he had his memories.
Starts ending fights faster becauase he can't afford to draw them out with talking or negotiation, so falls into lethal intensity survival mode very quickly.
Arrives at Camp Jupiter earlier (timelines are messy anyways, but he should spend more time at Camp Jupiter before the Quest). I just want actual description of the bathhouse, the infrastructure, the routines and attitudes. I want to know what makes the Greeks and Romans different!
Goes by Perseus, because that's what monsters and gods know him as. Also for fun omens about being The Destroyer.
Camp Jupiter assumes they're being tested at first, but then assume that he's a god made mortal so Reyna claims his service for the Legion. She sends him on the Quest under Frank as his Task.
Becaue he's Greek, a very powerful unknown demigod older than the usual initiative and unknowingly becoming a god, he's uncomfortable with the crowds of Roman demigods and legacies, so spends a lot of time in the Temples and quiet places talking to naiads and fawns. Put into trainign as a priest for Neptune, to appease the god and keep Percy out of the way. Builds the understanding of Octavian's huge political power as Augur.
ANNABETH
The Powerless Demigod, the Strategist.
The only one without a clearly divine power, but she's spent her life training to make up the difference. Athena Cabin pours over battle plans and mythology books, anything to get an edge. She doesn't get magic weaving powers, but they all learn and practise weaving to honour their Mother's domain. Big ephasis in Athena Cabin of Athena always being the best and the wisest and Right and that whould never be questioned (which drove initial conflict with Percy in first series over parent's rivalry). Put a lot of stock in making Athena proud of her.
Character arc: after being disowned, forced onto a suicide quest that's killed countless siblings before her while on a world-saving deadlined Great Prophecy Quest, with her only magic support disenchanted... Annabeth becomes disillusioned with Athena as a goddess and a mother (because love and respect are earned, not entitled by blood... and with the example of Sally during interactions while searcing for Percy...). She disavows herself as a Child of Athena.
After Gaea: maybe she becomes a priestess to Percy after designing him a temple. Joins Jason as architect to his Potifex Maximus duties, eventually made Immortal as Architect of Olympus (because there's no way she finished redesigning Olympus in the months between the Titan War ending and Percy disappearing).
Tartarus: during the fall, she blindly sews together some of Arachne's tapasteries in the pitch blakcness to make them a parachute to halp survive the landing.
PIPER
The Titan Army Traitor.
Maybe she never got taken to Camp, maybe she did and immediately ran away from it that night or the next day rather than stay at the Hermes Distaster Relief Shelter Cabin. Either way, she gets picked up by the Titan Army cause. People who help her, train her, sympathise with feeling abandoned by the gods to the mercy of monsters. They don't have much, but they're fighting for a better world. They're family. Then things start to change; Luke becomes more Kronos and demigods start to go missing, some on Missions, some to shadowy corners and the satisfied grins of the monsters who were also angry at the gods and should be their allies. Maybe she even met Selena a few times for Charmspeak training and listened to her sister share her worries and doubts about the Cause... then the Princess Andromeda blows up and she realises the other side are aiming to kill opposing demigods just the same as monsters. She'll find no mercy with them or their gods. She runs before the Battle of Manhattan.
In Lost Hero, she doesn't get immediately Claimed at Camp and knows exactly why. While no one is looking, sacrifices something precious to her to Aphrodite, one of two metal WonderWoman-style bracelets/cuffs, the first and only gift from Silena. She is very, very afraid of the gods.
Character alteration: Janis type Mean Girl. She puts on a defensive mask of snide nastiness, learned for the cameras and honed under the expectations of the Aphrodite Child stereotype. Knows how to act and use body language to sell a lie as well as Charm. Runs cons with Leo as the face of the opperation, uses perfumes to hide their demigod scents.
Arc: learning to let down her walls and trust the team to have her back. Also, an earned (on both sides) reconicilliation with Aphrodite.
Embodies Aphrodite Areia, the war aspect of her mother's domain. Uses a spear and wears her cabin's enchanted pink armour. Maybe she also gets Katoptris, but parallels of Selena by training with Clarisse with a spear. Received enchated metal bracelets (Wonder Woman style), pink from Aphrodite cabin secret technique for enchanting protections on it. Learns to fight with her remaining one as a small, localised shield.
Abilities: Charmspeak, empath & emotional manipulation, voice mimicry and minor visual shapeshifting ability (ie. also noted in Silena) for physical features (semi-involuntary with emotional surges, anger makes her teeth sharpen and nails grow points etc.). Innate sailing affinity as part of Aphrodite's ocean heritage, a way to connect with Percy.
ROMAN
JASON
The Olymian Champion.
A messy mix of feral wolf and absolute rule stickler. Was raised by Lupa and then learned how to be in human society through the Legion, through the lense of that being human pack dynamics. Human: polite, controlled, often wearing a small smile with no teeth, opperates by strict rules with Reyna offering the more flexible alernative. More than a bit OCD.
Puts the expectations of others above his personal desires and is pushed to be a puppet of the gods. Hera's Champion, Eagle Child of the God King Jupiter, Wolf Cub of Lupa (claimed as her child like Romulus and Remus, calls her mother). Blesing of Lupa gives him slightly pointed ears and teeth.
Appearance: platinum blonde hair that's almost like white lightning, electric blue eyes that glow when using powers, always carries glasses in a special armoured case and is farsighted (because he focuses too much on the bigger picture to see the immediate),
Arc: learning to live life outside of the rulebook. Letting out more wolfish behaviour and being comfortable in himself.
Conflict with Percy as caught between human knowledge of 'powerful stranger of a foreign pantheon' as a threat to protect the Pack against... and wolf instinct subconsciously recognising Baby God with Roman conditioning to kneel in deference.
HAZEL
The Living Ghost.
She came back to life, but spent decades dead and in Asphodel, so different from two-second deaths of Gwen and Jason. Hazel is a dead soul in a living body.
Physical: cold to the touch and always absolutely silent. Someone next to her hears her take a breath before speaking and is unsettled to realise they heard it because it's almost like he wan't breathing before (she was, but less than a normal human and completely inaudibly). She watches others with an like a owl-like unblinking stillness, a dark form with glowing eyes like an inverse of her father's sacred barn owl. I kind of also want her skin to be cracked through with veins of immortal gold, because her body was remade to return to life, not just resiscitated, so she would have early practice with manipulating the Mist to look normal.
Emotional: Quiet and kind but ruthless, strongly justice-oriented. Visciousness is its own mercy, especially in combat. Makes a judgement and cannot be swayed from her ruling, but is fair in learning all the contextual information before making decisions about people. A step out of rhythm with the rest of the living.
Hazel's Curse: Thanatos' chains are made out of Stygian Iron and Stygian Ice (frozen Styx water), which tries to rip her dead soul from her living body, freezes her hand to the chain. Frank sacrifices some of his life to her (via stick) to melt her hand off the chain, lighting up her gold-veins with blinding light and breaking her Curse (I just want them holding hands and glowing the gold of gods, this couple of a mortal and a ghost).
Abilities: Pluto domains over earth riches, death and agriculture. Cannon abilities, but after SoN wears cuff bracelets inlaid with gem shards that she can pull out and whip around like a deadly ribbon of shrapnel. Being semi/formerly dead, Hazel has a heightened sense for living things, extending to something agricultural (idk, but would be useful against Gaea, yeah?).
Weapon: Scythe, weapon of Proserpina (Persephony) and death connotations. Would just be cool to have her on Arion with a scythe like a golden Grim Reaper and it diversifies the weapons in the 7.
FRANK
The Cursed Legacy.
Frank is a 4th gen Legacy whose paternal Great Grandfather was a demigod son of Mars, but also secretly Legacy of Neptune by his ancestor marrying Neptune-demigod Shen Lun. Each generation has strived to earn patronage of Mars, but the blessings passed by blood have gotten weaker every generation, indicating losing divine favour. Family blames it on the dishonour of Shen Lun and his Neptune-blood sullying the bloodline.
Frank is essentially mortal, but high social class from heritage of Mars-bloodline-favour and lineage service to Legion.
He can't have any amborsia or nectar, but can carefully use the Roman alternative cures like unicorn draught.
Frank has been trained since childhood to be able to keep up with first-gen demigods in combat and uphold (secretly, to regain) the honour of Mars to the Legion. Would not be an outcast if he wasn't friends with Hazel, but he chose friendship with her over social standing/reputation.
Ended up in 5th Cohort through Octavian's machinations to 'improve the cohort standard', actually a subtle blackmail message that he knows about the fading Favour.
The stick: since Shen Lun (and his dishonourable Legion discharge), every member of his line has been born with one. Using the shapeshifting ability directly correlates to it 'burning' by dissolving in golden light. It also turns strands of hair white like the effect of holding the Sky.
There's not enough divinity in his body to handle the power in his blood. Every use kills him a little bit more, but is it dishonourable to prioritise selfish survival over the safety of his comrades? The survival of the Quest?
NONHUMAN
LEO
The Fading Spirit, the Healer.
Leo is a daimon (immortal spirit with power varying from satyr to minor god like Thanatos), a rustic fire spirit called a Dactyl (insert dinosaur jokes here). Predate satyrs and oreads, male counterpart to Hekaterides and often conflated with Kouretes. Species has almost entirely Faded into extinction.
Dactyls are ancient smiths and healing magicians, mostly associated with Hephaestus like satyrs are with Dionysus, but some individuals with others (like Paionios with Asclepius) always in a supporting role. Children of Anchiale, titanness of the warming heat of fire.
Over the centuries, he quietly protects demigods, finding them and leading them to a satyr/camp. Due to Fading, a lot of memories are hazy, difficutly monitoring the flow of time.
Pretends to be a demigod, disguised by Piper's perfume from Coach Hedge, after praying to Hephaeustus gets Claimed by him as a patron. Leo is Sammy and knew Hazel, protected her from monsters, left Alaska after her death, still has the diamond she gave him.
Abilities: metalworking, fire, maths, cannon abilities, healing and wild dancing.
Role: support role and essentially non-combatant, as no natural fighting ability/instinct like demigods. Engineer on the Argo II and team healer
Calypso: Leo has a lot of life experience all around the world, remebers Olympus being in different places and can catch her up of the world she's missed. By the end of the Quest, Leo is no longer in danger of Fading, Calypso is still immortal and their being together is a more equal deal.
Epilogue:
List of Immortals by the end of the series:
Percy (god), Annabeth (similar to Ariadne), Leo (daimon, but partnering with Calypso would become more level with minor god than satyr).
Other characters: Calypso, Grover (Lord of the Wild), Thalia (Huntress), Tyson, Bob and Damasen eventually.
Possibly Hazel and Frank, acting as soul guides/ psychopomps, otherwise Elysium. Possibly Jason for services as Pontifex Maximus in reviving belief of minor and/or Fading gods and daimons, but he'd probably prefer going to Elysium than staying with the Gods forever. Piper... I can't think of a significant divine link, so probably to Elysium. The immortal among the 7 would visit the Underworld souls, of course.
Camp development:
Romans: Become more inclusive, social development. Opening to trade with Greeks and through them also the Egyptians etc.
Greeks: Become more stablished, societal development. Colonize Ogygia (Calypso tethered it to Long Island) as a safe haven to live in full-time, start building a full Greek society.
