Will’s always been scary as fuck, even if he covers it up with introversion and wit and average social graces most of the time. When we’re introduced to him in episode one, he’s already popping aspirin, having night sweats and vivid nightmares, and seeming overstimulated and raw, even when he’s alone at home. He already has the beginnings of the encephalitis that Hannibal will exacerbate. What we know about Will— the clear-minded Will with his usual sense of self— before season two is only what bits and pieces we’ve heard through dialogue. And the dialogue is very telling. Jack tells Hannibal that Will “is the kind of man who knows exactly what’s going on in his head, that’s why he doesn’t want anyone else up there.” Alana tells Jack that she’s always avoided being in a room alone with Will, and I agree with her there— even when he cloaks himself in civility, Will’s proclivities towards stranger, crueler things can show through in his expression or his words. And Will calls Alana on this later in season one, saying he’s noticed it. It’s lighthearted enough, but there’s a harsher undertone that makes her wariness as a single woman even more understandable— he’s letting her know that he’s noticed that, that him noticing that gives him the higher ground. It’s the kind of thing that makes your neck prickle. His blatant threats to Pazzi that he clearly has fun making are really just par to the course for him now that he’s discarded his “person suit” other than when it’s convenient.
