Air fryer quail for dinner... we're getting better at it. The younger birds processed and cooked immediately (well "immediately," it took me a bit to pluck them but we cooked them once I was done with that).

These boys were SUCH a pain in the ASS to pluck though, they're going through molt so there were pinfeathers everywhere. Lesson learned about processing them too young!

My personal experience with being asked this question and then given that line, is that the neurotypical person expected you to feel shame. I have some slightly less anecdotal evidence to back up this anecdotal experience. I took substitute teacher training once, and we were told that the best thing to do with middle schoolers "acting up," was to shame them, to figure out how to draw attention to them and this negative attention in front of their peers would shame them into good behaviour, or at least silence. I raised my hand, having already distinguished myself as the "weirdo" of the group, and said, "Is this the reason I spent a lot of time in the principal's office for truthfully, loudly, and clearly answering questions like, 'would you care to share your thoughts with the class?'" And was told yes, that was a perfect example, but I was the rare case where it backfires.

Since then, I have responded to that type of question with, "Do you want an explanation, or was your intent simply to indicate that I need to feel inferior, right now?" and it does tend to turn the tables a little bit.

in theory the difference between reason and excuse is "this is why it happened" vs "this is why it doesn't count"

but nobody really uses it like that, they just mean "you need to feel inferior"

Had some arguments with my girlfriend when I said stuff like "my phone slipped off the pile I was holding and fell down the stairwell". Because she thought it was me somehow deflecting psychological blame for dropping my phone. And that was *wild* to me. Because "if I'd been holding it correctly, it wouldn't have been in a position to slip out of my hands" was basically implicit. But, I didn't "drop" it because that is a different mechanical phenomenon.

But just in general [beyond GF], it is incredibly annoying to be doing a mea culpa of "I fucked up, and here is how" and be told you are making excuses. Like, my man, I am laying my shame bare to you, not trying to escape it.

Screaming into the void what the fuck is my life? Why does she have to be so damn dramatic? She can do this shit herself wtf? And not important enough to bother a married man at near midnight WTF? Can the drama stay in the reddit stories I listen to please?

The Most Tumblr Punchline

I've noted before that my favorite punchline on Tumblr is "hang on, gotta look something up/okay that's funny."

Let me explain why:

It is a way to say "I don't get it" without blaming the joke or the teller.

It is a tacit admission of ignorance without shame or judgement.

It assumes responsibility for acquiring the knowledge the respondent doesn't already have.

It cues other people who Don't Get It to do the look-up themselves, allowing them to get that full impact of Getting It without derailing the post with explanations.

It gives subsequent readers, whether or not THEY got the joke, a little frisson of good feelings when they realize that someone else is now In On The Joke.

It not only makes the original joke funnier, it gets funnier the more often it's used.

She told me that this style is what Navajo women wear.

Apparently one type of deer hunting practiced in the Middle Ages was using “stalking horses” which involves crouching behind horse in a forest and slowly guiding it towards a deer that’s been tracked because deer are not frightened by the sight of other tall quadrupeds and I like how “horses as a form of camouflage” is belongs to the list of uses for domestic horses
