When I was diagnosed my therapist told me I have “ADHD plus” which meant to him ADHD and comorbid Depression. I don’t know if it’s an official term but I liked it better than “ADHD and Depression”.

Die Diagnostik zahlt sowohl die Krankenkasse (GKV) als auch die PKV (Außer wenn man bei der privaten Versicherung psychotherapeutische Leistungen von vornherein im Tarif ausgeschlossen hat).

Die längste Wartezeit ist tatsächlich bis man überhaupt einen freien Platz in einer Klinik oder bei einem Therapeuten zur Diagnostik bekommt. Wenn es sich nicht um einen Notfall handelt kann das manchmal Monate (!) dauern. Im Zweifelsfall würde ich empfehlen zuerst zum Hausarzt zu gehen, der kann eine Überweisung schreiben, was das Ganze beschleunigt. Dann kommt die Dauer der Diagnostik auf die Einzelperson und den Therapeuten an. Wie oft bekommt man einen Termin, wieviele Tests müssen gemacht werden, wie kompliziert ist die Symptomatik (Komorbide Störungen etc.). Bei ADHS ist das in der Regel nicht mit einer Sitzung getan sondern es braucht einige Termine, ich würde mich da auf zwei Wochen bis einen Monat einstellen.

First of all if you’re 18 you don’t have to worry about a psychiatrist telling your parents anything. In Germany you are legally an adult and without your consent doctors (and therapists) can’t tell anyone anything. Especially considering the new data protection regulations. The only problem might be, if you’re still living together with your family, that they could find a doctor‘s letter (you’ll typically get one, after your diagnosis is finished). But I’m hoping that they respect your privacy and won’t open it.

Just do a little research and call psychiatrists and therapists in you area. Also think about psychiatric wards, because they are specialists and very good for a diagnosis.

But since I’m actually getting many asks on that topic (“I think I might have ADHD, how do I consult a psychiatrist without my parents finding out”) here are some general thoughts on that:

I know that it’s very hard to speak with your parents about mental health stuff. They might worry about you, they might not believe you (at first), etc.. But as long as they are not abusive, I’d still recommend to do it. Remember: Jour mental health “journey” is hard for them too.

If you still absolutely don’t want your parents to find out and your minor there are - depending on where you’re from - ways to get diagnosed. I’d recommend speaking to your school psychologyst (if you have one): You don’t have to make an appointment anywhere else and he/she might help you and will give you professional advice (unlike me).

Nevertheless it’s problematic: you can’t get a prescription for meds without their consent. If you’re at risk (for example suicidal) they are obligated to tell your parents. Which could cause you to not tell the professional about it.

TLDR: No, it’s not an ADHD thing but it could be a symptom of OCD.

So, earworms are actually pretty common. 98% percent of the western population experience one at least once. However it’s not an ADHD thing, according to current research.

What I didn’t know but found out, researching this topic: Unwanted, reoccurring and intrusive earworms („stuck song syndrome“) are apparently related to OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). So, if this happens frequently and bothers you, I would speak to a therapist about it.

Many of my ADHD-friends had similar problems with their parents. What contributes to problem is that the majority of our society is misinformed about ADHD and it’s symptoms. It even starts with the name itself and the cliches spreaded by the media for sure don’t help.

You could try talking to your parents and explain them what ADHD really is and that you don’t have to be “hyper” to have it. Mabe buy a referent-book or print out an article from a credible source (I can suggest some, if you want) and give it to them. You could also just tell them that since you’re struggling you need professional help to find the cause. It might be ADHD but it could be something else and you want to find out what it is. A professional will find out if you’re really completely “healthy”/“neurotypical”.
