since the pyrocord loved this so much
we had been talking with @residentrodents about avid’s narrative and it spiralled into owen and avid parallels, and then just owen’s narrative
it made me think about how owen felt about avid and scott’s relationship, and then about how owen felt about scott in general
it is important to note that owen didn’t have any negative feelings about scott at the beginning of the series. in fact, he liked scott so much, that he considered turning scott before knowing he was a vampire MUCH older than him. but by the end of the series, he quite clearly dislikes scott, for reasons he never explains. i think it was a build up of things. starting with not feeling that he was treated equally, but kind of brushed it off and let it slide because well, it was the only thing. it’s not like scott ever lied to him right
well. as owen gets angrier through the series, he starts to pick apart everyone. nobody is safe from his insecure scrutiny. even if it’s not public, in his mind, he’s already shoving away anyone he feels would betray him,,, which so happens to be everyone
then avid comes along.
something important to note is that scott told owen he could have next dibs after scott had turned pyro. since scott got the first meal, clearly it was owen’s turn to have someone. now, who did he have next dibs on?
avid.
owen may have killed all of oakhurst, but just murder isn’t enough. none of the town in his time would ever know how it FEELS to be cast out and pushed around and treated like a criminal for existing.
owen knew avid was like him. owen saw how the town didn’t really like him too much, owen SAW how much of a nervous wreck and outcast avid already was. and he PREYED upon it. he did everything to keep avid in his own grasp, and maybe even had wanted to turn avid long before wanting to turn legs. owen’s background of poverty made him incredibly possessive of the few things he DOES have, or the things he perceives himself as deserving of- which is why avid was SPECIFICALLY his target. owen’s attempts to manipulate and hurt avid were partly also attempts to make him angry. he wanted a monster to unleash on the world, someone to carry on his legacy because he was tired of being angry himself, but he didn’t want to leave the world forgetting what they’d done.
but avid just, doesn’t have that fuse to light. his anger is more, fear masking as anger. and also the demon but hey we don’t talk about that
legs, however DOES have that fuse. which is why legs was essentially owen’s last ditch attempt to leave his mark on the world
so when shelby turned avid,, owen was upset, but let it slide. because it’s shelby. he likes shelby. he’s the mother gothel to her rapunzel. besides, she didn’t KNOW he had already staked claim to avid. she’s just a kid. she doesn’t know better.
on the other hand, scott knew he’d staked claim to avid, he reiterated it like twice. and still, when avid clung to scott, scott made no effort to say no. no effort to help owen. and scott is old. he SHOULD know better than to take what wasn’t his.
owen didn’t like pyro a whole lot before pyro’s apology for lying. because pyro lied to him. but after the apology? they were okay.
and thus, seeing that pyro also had reason to hate avid and scott, he essentially decided “if i can’t have avid then no one can” in an attempt to hurt scott. and we know this was to hurt scott because the second avid’s dead, owen immediately turns to pyro, scott’s only other semi willing connection that wasn’t shelby, and essentially said “you’re next” before pyro diffused the situation.
owen wanted scott severely hurt. honestly if pyro wasn’t there, he’d have probably mauled scott himself. and well, avid’s death did hurt scott, it ended up hurting shelby more. which he is sorry about [as much as he fails to sound genuine in his apology]. because he does care about shelby- in a really unhealthy way. but hey
what’s done is done.
and he gets to live every day in hell, reminded of every bad thing he’s ever done in his life :]
