xichen is so impossible to balance writing. guy who loves and fully trusts his brother but also allowed him to be beaten almost to death for breaking rules which he himself follows less than his brother does and also he is in charge of his brother and both of them act like it but there is no resentment or blame on either side. guy who is gay but will be closeted forever to protect his brother and his sect but also to protect himself even though it doesn't protect him at all and also because he is deeply ashamed of it but would never talk to his also-gay brother about it because he can't be encouraging his brother even though he Does encourage his brother and tolerates an undead war criminal on his behalf. guy who isn't a real person and is in love with two other people who aren't real people in opposite directions from each other. guy in charge of the child abuse factory who prioritizes the survival of the child abuse factory above all else even though it hollowed him out and almost killed his brother and imprisoned his mother. guy who refuses to make a choice except that he does make choices and they're always the wrong ones. guy who is proven fundamentally wrong and it ruins his life but will not change it.

Lan Qiren is interesting as the sole named main sect member of his generation left alive at the end of the story. all other parents have long since died for their sins but his punishment is to live to see the sect he sacrificed so much for either end or change when his gay nephews don't continue the Cycles

to pretend that horrible people cannot make good art is another way to conflate beauty and talent with integrity and morality. the works of monsters are best examined with knowledge of the author in mind but art is not inherently reflective. human beings are creative, and habitual liars- it'd be stupid to pretend art must always be a portrait of its creator

maybe this is not my place to say because I am monolingual, and I'm sure it's part of a larger, more nuanced discussion about visibility and accessibility on the internet, but I think it'd be cool if people posted in their native languages more instead of in english. I see people do it way more on other platforms than on tumblr which is almost exclusively in english

One thing that Twitter did really great is allow for automatic translation in one click. It's not perfect, but it's better than nothing, and you see people having conversations in different languages thanks to that. Maybe tumblr could add something like that?
