People who work within a system: okay so studies show that the normal system works 90% of the time, but because itâs very bad when it doesnât work, weâve set up a process to manage those outliers. We need six well-trained workers to run the system 100% of the time without any serious incidents.
CEOs and politicians, every time: Well i just saw it go right twice in a row which means the normal system which you say works 90% of the time actually works 100% of the time. Weâre cutting the team down to one person pulling 18 hour shifts without breaks
TRA here means "transracial adoptee" fyi, just in case you're used to seeing that in another context
[Image IDs: Series of Tweets from verified user Ida Bae Wells (@/ nHannahJones) on 1/10/19 reading: Whew. Boy. So, when I was in Ore. I started reporting a story on transracial adoption, specifically looking at w parents/ b kids. You wouldn't believe some of the things that white parents told me. Or maybe you wld. I was shook. Realized was no way I cld be objective. I killed it.
I met a woman who breastfed her adopted black children as a form of reparations for when enslaved black women had to be wet nurses for white children. She used to post photos on her web site until she got a lot of backlash.
One white couple, who like almost all these parents, did not have any black friends or relationships with any black people, would arrange "black" time for their children by inviting other white parents of black adoptees for African-themed parties.
The kids were all American-born black kids but they would parade them in kente cloth outfits and make them do drumming. Almost all the white adoptive parents I met thought African culture was legitimate but they had to protect black kids from black American cultural influence.
White parents often did not bother to learn a single thing about how to care for black children's hair, somehow believed black children did not need to wash or comb their hair for months would would get offended when a concerned black person would try to instruct them.
One white family told legitimately told me, without a hint of irony or shame, that they'd adopted a black boy because her husband always wanted a son who would be a basketball player.
They would pretend to be "colorblind" while aggressively removing their children from any and all contact with black institutions, black movies, black books or other aspects of black culture.
When I asked if it were fair to the child to constantly force the child to be the only black person at school, at church, at gatherings, they would tell me that they did not go to black churches or programs and it would feel fake and insincere if they joined just for their child.
They believed they could make the children culturally white and simply overlook their skin color and the way the whole world would see them. They were most concerned about their racial comfort and had no concern for the discomfort and isolation their children would feel.
And, yes, the thought the black people who showed concern, who offered to help them navigate the racial reality of America, or passed along info about black hair salons, or suggested black churches or cultural events were the real racists.
So, yeah, I decided I could not write the story and be fair, because being fair meant I would have trashed their entire existence.
Oh, and did you know that many private adoption agencies let you choose the acceptable percentage of blackness in the child you will accept. Part of the application lets you select if you'll take a fully black child, half black or just a quarter black.
Black children are always rated the least desirable. They often go to the white parents who are the most desperate, who haven't been able to get any of their other choices. So, yeah.
Many Asian adoptees have had similar experiences. I interviewed some as well. They were part of a group known as Angry Korean Adoptees.

white kids get to have quirky racist phases black kids dont get to be kids
black kids get their lives stolen from them if they defend themselves from white kids "going through a phase"
Bloopers are movie aftercare and itâs fucked up that we got rid of them
agnostic-atheist spectrum but with flavors
an omnipotent creator being almost certainly doesn't exist but if it does, it's a supervillain
gods shouldn't exist but we keep creating them to use as weapons. and no one knows how to defuse one
gods don't exist which is a relief bc otherwise we'd be forced to hunt them down for execution
creator god exists and we owe it nothing (DEEPLY unqualified)
god/s abandoned us and it hurt at the time but in hindsight we escaped a highly toxic relationship
the universe is a pet goldfish kept in an irresponsibly small bowl by a toddler deity whose parents are considering moving up to a hamster
not just atheist but anti-theist. a divine being descends to earth and im in the background booing
god isn't real but if it was, we'd be obligated to imprison it for crimes against humanity
do you have any advice on character design?
watch The Sopranos
i actually wanted to elaborate on this and say that i think itâs a really bad habit of a lot of artists, influenced by current media casting practices, to unconsciously or consciously make every single character they create super pretty, like everyone is just hot in that very boring, homogenous way, and this also comes as a result of people using actors and celebrities as character references or faceclaims and AI facial generation programs like Artbreeder being trained on people who are generally very pretty-looking. it results in alienating, uncanny worlds and drawings completely devoid of people who just look like regular people. it results worlds populated by mannequins fresh off the CW. I feel like whether a character is attractive or not should actually matter, be part of their character, because that kind of thing absolutely affects the way you move through the world and the way the world treats you.
so i wanted to throw in some suggestions that, whenever Iâm trying to find a character reference or otherwise draw very interesting-looking yet regular-looking people, which i usually have to do for bit characters in @ikroahâ or something, I tend to look for references in the following places. these are far from the only reliable way to get inspiration, this is just a non-exhaustive list of places iâve looked before for visual inspiration when needing to create a character, whether starring characters or background ones:
pre-2000s television (The Sopranos and Twin Peaks especially having incredible character design)
extras in comedy sketch shows
esports players
real photos (not staged stock photos) of line cooks
70s baseball players
athletes from more obscure olympic sports like the javelin toss or greco-roman wrestling, especially if youâre looking for a specific body type
ska, jazz, and blues musicians
firefighters
improv troupes
for teenagers, searching âhigh school english class projectâ on youtube and sorting by Upload Date
state senators, small-town mayors, and generally obscure local government positions like comptroller or treasurer (yes i know politicians can be bad sometimes but smaller elections especially donât really depend on looks)
people who walk by your window (if you live in a city like I do)
and again these are just, in my opinion, deep and easy wells to dive in if you want to get a good idea of what regular people look like. these suggestions arenât the limits on where you can possibly find inspiration for character design
Felliniâs movies have remarkably interesting and unique looking actors
Yes!!! Thereâs an entire book called Felliniâs Faces thatâs nothing but portraits of his actors thatâs phenomenal for this kind of thing, though itâs fairly rare to get a hold of today.
(Since I know a lot of writers/artists follow me for costume/character design ideas!)
Fellini's faces by Federico Fellini, unknown edition,

we need to bring back the phrase "what business is it of yours" in a big way i'm serious
i know you can just say "none of your business" but phrasing it as a question with a jarringly formal tone is the ideal way to shoot an overfamiliar unwelcome overture dead in its tracks and force the person making it to confront the boundaries they're taking for granted + it would really piss people off which is funny
since there is such an "english speakers who don't even try to pronounce a foreign mame correctly" epidemic, native english speakers often try to overcorrect and end up thinking they have a moral imperative to pronounce every foreign name correctly at all times. so i'm gonna hold your hand and look into your eyss as i say this: you can't. you can't pronounce every sound in a language you don't speak. and that's fine. it happens to the rest of us too. we won't be mad so long as you try your best.
âI did some research to pronounce this name correctlyâ = đ great! even if the pronunciation was still off (and learning to pronounce a foreign language correctly takes a lot of practice) people generally appreciate it when someone goes the extra mile for accuracy, and honestly, languages are cool
âIâm probably not saying that correctlyâ/âsorry for my pronunciationâ = đ understandable! foreign languages often have sounds that arenât used in English and learning to correctly pronounce unfamiliar phonemes is genuinely difficult even with help
âlol Iâm not even gonna TRY to pronounce that đâ = đ THIS is the problem, if treats languages other than English like they are inherently âweirdâ or âoverly complicatedâ just because you arenât familiar with them
âOne thousand apologies for my butchering of this beautiful effervescent tongue, I will now flagellate myself as punishment for my crimesâ = đ chill
