the idea that every summer will be as hot if not hotter than this for the rest of my life is unbearable i need to (remembers suicide jokes are bad for my mental health) murder an oil executive
A couple of years ago we were all terribly concerned about the fact that a lot of American high schools are assigning such crushing homework loads that some kids literally don't have enough time to eat or sleep (and all this in spite of the fact that there's no good evidence that assigning homework actually improves academic outcomes at the pre-university level), but now we're hearing stories about those same schools struggling to stop kids from using ChatGPT to write their essays and suddenly It's The Children Who Are Wrong. Like, do you think maybe there's a certain level of cause and effect in play here?
i keep trying to explain to people that teenagers are making mostly rational decisions based on the information they have, and no one seems to believe me
you probably won't be surprised at the pushback I've gotten from teachers at the college level (who by and large don't have to worry about NCLB guidelines and tests) at suggesting that if critical thinking is the problem being lost, maybe we should change our testing and assessment styles to directly measure critical thinking on the fly rather than throwing up our hands and blaming TECHNOLOGY
the trick is that these assessment styles often require more work to think about and construct assessments for and that is work that college instructors are typically compensated very poorly if at all for, so like, I get it. but that's how you fix this shit. and I think if you are invested in the project of education for its own sake, you have to consider the ways in which incentivizing your students not to rely on chatgpt involves changing the structure of your shared activities together such that failing to learn and digest material is routinely boring or unpleasant and that knowing it is the only way to feel that one is succeeding in class in small, low-stakes, frequent interactions rather than single high-stakes ones.

Tonight on Game Changer:
The world's most insane game of telephone featuring six comedians, three artists, and a PA with the temperament of a shaking chihuahua being held at gunpoint

See no evil, hear no evil, smell no evil.
looking at my search history in the morning after being high as hell the night before
The Noise Boys all crowded in that phone booth and attempting to relay prompts has the same energy as a bunch of middle-school boys attempting to prank-call their friends at a sleepover and none of them can keep a straight face
I needed to make a moodboard of Kaylin the PA and I needed to make it immediately. someone called her a shaken chihuahua. she's amazing.

some favorite moments from last night, in no particular order:
noise boys not even making it through their FIRST telephone prompt squished in the booth
everyone working on a drawing of sam and him being delighted
“brennan read that to me like he had my child held hostage”
the artists sticking their greedy hands out for the drawing like some labyrinth-esque monster puppet
butt or boner? who knows
BONG BONG BONG BONG BONG BONG BONG BONG
tiny canvas, giant pencil
they’re like children who need to be on opposite ends of the classroom

Dont blame yourself for not having known a lesson only time could teach
in hindsight, growing up as an aromantic person who didn't know aromanticism was a thing...it woulda been really easy for me to assume that something was wrong with me, that I was "broken" or "missing" some piece of humanity.
luckily I was autistic, oblivious, and had a huge ego. it literally never occurred to me to frame it as a "me" problem. i just thought every single person i knew was a dumbass
