Charlie Chaplin is a famous comedian. Apparently he's a man of many talents but I know more about his comedy routines. Due to his rise in popularity his signature mustache had become popular known as the "toothbrush mustache".

His signature mustache was used by many men especially in Germany. Even used by another well known man that isn't exactly popular or well liked.

After 1945 the toothbrush mustache quickly fell out of style and was never used again.

Do you want to reclaim the toothbrush mustache, call it the Chaplin mustache, and wear it around?

Or have you suddenly realized that just because symbols had innocent origins doesn't mean that the symbols don't trigger certain negative responses in 2023?

Nazis have built their entire ideology on stealing from literally all cultures worldwide and turning the sacred symbolics into the symbols of hatred. If we condemn our sacred symbols, that means that the Nazi scum won.

Reclaim, and batter every single fucking Nazi piece of shit who tries to spoil it.

And have researched into the original use of runes.

And has mourned at the loss of the indigenous practices of Europe because of Christian colonization.

Runes were originally the ancient Germanic alphabet, and it's often cited that they were used in Germanic and Norse practices, there's little proof of that. There is some speculation that they were used in divination by the volva (Norse Seers that practiced seidr. A tradition usually held by women. Odin learned it from Lady Freyja.)

That's not to say that you can't use runes in your modern practice. But to say "Runes are sacred symbols of my ancestors" is... do you consider our modern alphabet sacred?

There is history of certain Nordic symbols being associated with gods and ideas alike such as the valknut being found on graves especially next to other symbols of Odin.

But in those cases there's other symbols that can be used to represent these gods such as the triple horns of Odin.

And idk. I don't think my ancestors would find it super cool if I wore shit that made minorities attacked by Christians feel uncomfortable given their own religion was destroyed by Christianity. Think they prefer I wear shit that made minorities feel safe around me.

Just like I consider hieroglyphs sacred for while I am not of Egyptian descent, I incorporate religion of ancient Egypt into my religious system.

Speaking of Valknut, it's the one that is actually not historically founded in actual Norse culture and is deemed to be created during the romantic reconstruction period. But that's a story for another day, for valknut can be very well implemented into Norse and Germanic heathen reconstructionism.

You know, runes don't make you frightened if you know the basics. Wary, indeed. But you need to get the complex picture. It's like saying that everyone who wears kolovrat is a Nazi. It's just another bit of my ancestors' culture that the Nazis try to steal. The answer is simple- make your actions speak louder than words, help your local community with focus on minorities and beat your local Nazi.

Denouncing our ancestors in favour of the Nazi scum is not the solution. It's making the problem even worse.

But this belief of entitlement for minorities to feel safe around you wearing Norse runes is so Christo-centric. As a person that grew up Christian. I 100% hands down believe that there's some Christians out there that are "the good ones". Care about indigenous beliefs and indigenous lands. Love queer people. Celebrate their queer family. I know that because I know them.

But all the same queer and indigenous people have a right to their feelings and Christians are not entitled to having them feel safe.

All the same. Norse Pagans aren't entitled to minorities impacted by white supremacists and Nazis feeling safe around us.

And this belief that you can keep wearing your symbols and prove you're one of "The Good Ones" when the people harmed by others wearing your symbols aren't gonna feel safe enough to get close and figure it out is so incredibly ignorant.

It's no different than the bottle blond liberal Christian wearing her cross and carrying her Bible everywhere then fucking SOBBING when a queer person doesn't feel safe around her.

I grew up Christian. I chose Christianity. I believed I could continue being Christian and prove we're not all bad. And when queer people (my people) were like "Yeah, I don't feel safe around Christians because I was kicked out as a child because of Christianity. I didn't get it."

But I listened and I've had my own life experiences that makes me jump away when I hear someone say Christian. Just like I have my own experiences that make my flinch when I see people wear Norse runes.

We're not entitled to people feeling safe around us if we wear Norse symbols. And chances are if we wear these symbols there's gonna be people that were hurt by white supremacists that'll never feel safe enough to get close and find out if we're like that.

They have a lot more to lose for trusting someone with Norse runes and being proven wrong than they have for not trusting us and being proven wrong.

So no. I'm not denouncing my ancestors by making a choice that'll make minorities feel safe. I'm honoring the minorities that wouldn't feel safe if I tried to reclaim the runes. This is why the Norse Pagan to alt-right pipeline is so fucking dangerous.

Fuck. I don't feel safe around people wearing Norse symbols any more than I feel safe about Christians.

As a person who grew up Christian and now honors their Viking ancestry. By all means. Wear your runes. But I can guarantee you that you're not changing the opinions about modern Vikings because I can guarantee you that the minorities most hurt by white supremacy and neo-nazis aren't going to feel safe enough to get close and figure out if you're one of the good ones.

People will not feel threatened around you because you wear runes. People will feel threatened around you if you give them a reason to. Eventually, they will feel threatened around you whether you're wearing runes or not.

The point is that giving up on retaining our history, our ancestors', and their beliefs, to the Nazis is not the safety you claim it to be. It is the exact opposite. If you let Nazis have the futhark to the point it's out of use beyond Nazi circles, they have won. And they won't stop until they take over every aspect of your life.

Hypothetical situation: Nazis claim * insert your name * as a historic heritage of the great German nation or some pathetic bullshit like this. They start naming their Nazi kids with * your name * What are you gonna do? Are you gonna go to the office and change your name to not offend anybody? Are you gonna let the Nazi scum rob you of your identity? Or you stand up, reclaim your name and beat up every Nazi motherfucker who tries to steal it from you?

Liberal ways of the world don't work. Neonazis are marching the streets of the US in broad daylight because liberal centrists has spent the last two decades playing this game of let's let the fascists put blame. Far-right hatemongering is surging through Europe. And the mindset you present is allowing it.

If you don't fight back when Nazis are stealing your culture, they see you as a defeatist coward who will never stand up against them, even as they're robbing your house and poisoning your dog. If you don't fight back when the Nazis are robbing you of your identity, they see you as already defeated.

When I pointed out that the average gadjo (and, honestly, most Roma) cannot identify a Romani person by appearance, that really pissed some of you off. Message received. You don't like that I brought this up. So, let me clarify what I mean:

All of the people in the above image are Romani. Do you see the same eye shapes? The same nose shapes? The same eyebrow shape, hair texture, skin tone, ect? How many of these participants could pass for another race in the United States? How many could pass for white?

The photos are all lit with very warm light (you can tell by the color of the white shirts), but there is A LOT of variation here. And these are activists! None of these people are trying to pass. Still not sure?

The people in this image are Romani, too, and at least three of them are related. They're visiting a memorial to the Romani victims of World War II. Note the variation in skin tone, nose shape, eye shape, hair color and texture.

This family is Romani. Specifically, they're Finnish Kale.

These are the faces of Romanian Romani living in the same village. They're likely related, at least distantly. Can you choose which nose is the "Romani nose?" Which eye shape says "Romani" to you? Is the child with light, straight hair representative, or the child with black, curly hair?

Or maybe these two people look Romani? They're Brazilian Roma, and they make up 4% of the Brazilian population. (For reference, the Romani population in Romania makes up about 8%.)

Is this family representative of our race? They're Roma from Italy.

Both Tayo Awususi-Onutor and Dotschy Reinhardt are Romani musicians and activists. Which one is representative? Whose features are Romani?

Why are we still pretending this exists?

I see people above who look like my brother, my mother, my aunts and uncles. But I also see lots of people that look nothing like us. Personally, I think that's wonderful! We are bigger than hair texture, more enduring than a nose shape or a skin tone.

There's a time and place to share a traumatic story with a friend.

I am a transgender, autistic, DID system suspected of having dysautonomia and fibromyalgia. I currently live with my partner who is also a transgender, autistic, DID system who cannot work.

We only have my income to work off of, and I don’t make much hourly. I’ve also had to take an extra day off work per week (three days total, so I only work four days) just so I don’t overwork myself.

We are working on figuring out if what I have really is dysautonomia and fibromyalgia, but in the meantime, I need to skip meals just to afford transportation to work. Skipping meals = I can’t take my meds = more and worsening pain and other symptoms.
