Do you ever feel uncomfortable with people who seem to only make Black characters who are very light skinned or have some sort of pigment variation like albinism or vitiligo? I've come across a lot of non-Black artists who will have a very small pool of Black characters out of like a billion east Asian and white ones and all of them are light skinned or have Vitiligo/albisim. Or they'll only have like one Black character and they have vitiligo. I'm wondering if I'm reading too much into this but it does seem suspious to me, like you only bothered to make 3 Black characters and you needed to make them as light as possible?
Ice: If they're only lighter skinned, yeah for sure I think there's a bias. For the other part of your question, I think this might be a "better" question for @vitiligo-is-not-a-trend , but I can see what you mean, in a way. Sometimes I think what it is to me, is people trying "too hard" to have a "unique" character design. Like, they want to seem "different", but it's like... Black people with vitiligo or albinism aren't some mystery combo character you gotta unlock as Black Person+.
Like they think having vitiligo is a cool aesthetic, like elf ears or a tail, rather than just... a Black person. If that's the only Black person you got in your line up of nonblack people, or if no one's color exceeds the paper bag, I'm gonna worry if you did it because you thought it was "cool" and not because you actually cared about that rep.
☕ Mr. CBC: Honestly, as the son of a person with Vitiligo. Representation is great! However, I don't trust non-Black people. I'm not saying this is the case for everyone, but like my wife said, it feels like they're choosing it for aesthetic purposes. For me, seeing artist only have light skin characters and characters with vitiligo, feels like an innate need to put whiteness into Black people to make them "better". ☕
