obeying the law will not protect you from fascism
i keep seeing people say that the reason they aren't resisting is because they don't want to go to jail and it's making me crazy.
did you know that in the us the cops can take your property and money if they think you committed a crime? they don't even have to arrest you or charge you. just ask afroman.
if your public defender sucks or doesn't care about defending you, you're fucked-- as the prairieland defendants know all too well. if cops don't have enough evidence to arrest or convict you, they'll fabricate some. hell, look at luigi mangione. you don't need to be convicted for your life to be ruined.
the us government is throwing RICO charges at people who run bail funds. they know the court of public opinion is every bit as important as the actual courts. all they have to do is say "that person is a terrorist" and people's brains switch off.
they have no qualms about making it impossible for you to find employment, get credit, or just live your life regardless of what you have or haven't done. sending you to prison for a crime you didn't commit is only one way for them to destroy you.
i say this not to induce guilt but because it's fucking dangerous to assume you'll be safer if you obey the law. generations of people before you thought the same thing, and they were wrong too. the state-- any state-- doesn't actually care about the law or morality. it cares about obedience.
all it takes is someone with a grudge to report you for unamerican activity-- excuse me, terrorism-- and the government has carte blanche to lock you up, take your stuff, and torture you. being a law abiding citizen guarantees you nothing. complying with fascism guarantees you nothing. this is not a rational system, it is a rabid dog.
the only way to protect yourself and your loved ones from fascism is to fight it. @crimethinc and @antifainternational have lots of resources about antifascism, mutual aid, and direct action. plenty of ways to fight fascism are still perfectly legal. just don't expect legality to mean anything when-- not if-- the machine gets hold of you.
