When someone becomes invested in selling their positions to a vaugly conservative idea of "normal people", fascists hear that all they have to do to make those people support bigotry is to push the Overton window so that the average person supports it.

When someone invests in the idea of keeping the peace and treats tolerance as a sort of alliance, fascists hear that all they need to do to make those people support bigotry is to make social harmony contingent on it.
