this one is fun bc baelor heals but badly and partially blind, and while delirious from pain he lets loose how Into maekar he is. and maekar is VERY repressed so the mental gymnastics he does is intriguing lol, like in the psychosxual mind games sort of way. my guy can't stand that baelor is gay for him but also refuses to let anyone else help him. the political plot of baelor trying to look like everything's fine is also great!

thicker skin || 🕑 70k

this one explores their relationship around redgrass and how it changes afterward. their wives are still alive. a 13yo valarr is actually squiring for maekar on the battlefield. the yearning is great in it. i like it a lot! author also has a prog rock band au they're just starting, so it's not on the rec list yet, but it looks promising so if u like their writing u shd check that out too.

Cut to the Bone || ✅️ 6.5k

nothing bad happens at the trial, and maekar gets arranged to be married with baelor bc daeron2 said so (ig gay marriage is fine in this lol cuz it's not omegaverse). maekar is VERY pissed at baelor abt the trial, but mostly he's self-punishing. i like this one bc maekar's angst is peak and i like the way the author describes how maekar feels he's failed his children as he watched them all leave him. some good angst with a nice ending!

racing past the point of no return || 🕑 20.5k

this is a modern no-nuance omegaverse au, but it's SO funny. idk if it'll be much your speed because it's a certain kind of funny and the omegaverse is pretty straightforward (hence my "no-nuance" tag for it) haha, but basically, baelor's dick stops spilling seed when he comes and maekar's like "i can help u fix that" but they're both SO convinced the other doesn't want them, romantically or carnally. and baelor's kind of a perv in it in that he steal maekar's underwear, but it's funny not creepy lol: baelor's just so desperate and trying to be so normal about it. it's not pwp bc there's a plot, but the plot is very thin aha. this fic made me laugh a lot reading it. :')) this fic finds them at the ages they're at in the show btw.

this one has submissive bottom baelor in it! 🙏 baelor is the king, and his lord hand maekar is annoyed that he isn't better guarded, so to make a point, maekar attacks baelor with baelor's own knife, and baelor discovers he feels Some Kinda Way about it. second chap is them roleplaying it and it's cute and domestic tbh i loved it aha.

🌟 The One Where It Was Supposed to Be a Secret (chapter 6) || ✅️ 9.5k

i'm recommending specifically chapter 6, since each chapter in this is its own contained story! it's another modern no-nuance omegaverse au, but that doesn't really come into play in the chapter; it's basically maekar's family (+ baelor & valarr) playing dnd bc egg wants to dm a campaign but has no friends. 🥲 it's SO cute, and i find the writing and dialogue really funny and charming. side pairings are dunkaerion and valaeron.

(again, aerion is kinda leather-pants-y, but he's like, sixteen here so he's less cruel twenty-something, more sharp lost teenager. tbh the dunkaerion chapter is nice too 'cuz it explores maekar's relationship with aerion, and i do think the author's dunk is a very good dunk. really, the whole fic is pretty nice, but i'm only really recommending the last chapter lol since it's sort of a grab-bag fic centred in the same modern omageverse au.)

this one is a genderbent maekar (and dyanna) in a modern au. i didn't put it in the proper list bc it's pretty removed from baekar thematically, and it hits the more traditionally (stereotypically?) scandalous incest beat, but i thought it was well-written! and the reveal was done nicely. it's just a different vibe from most hammeranvil lol; if you changed their names, the reader wouldn't lose much, ykwim? still, conceptually fun.

a prophecy, left unfulfilled || ✅️ 6.5k

this one is a mention bc it's not centred on hammeranvil. this is an omegaverse au where baelor and maekar are biological parents to all eight kids, and the fic is about how baelor in particular feels about, and deals with, daeron's dragon dreams---esp bc he's been dreaming that baelor will die since he was a kid. i have a soft spot for daeron, as u know, and this fic explores the baelor & daeron relationship in a way i really like!

this one isn't a main rec bc it's centred more on their families instead of their relationship, but i thought you'd be interested bc it's that daemon au i was talking about! baelor sees the way aerion's daemon is a meek and scared thing, and approaches maekar about it. interesting au exploration. :)

this is actually more of a stormhedge rec lol, and i must confess i mostly skimmed it bc i was specifically looking for the baekar chapter BUT it's an omegaverse daemon au where dunk's daemon is an elk named rafe, and the world-building is interesting! it also builds more of a dimensional background for lyonel that you might enjoy. and i always love a fic where the author clearly put a lot of thought, time, and effort into every single detail. but anyways, i think you might really like how it approaches the daemon stuff in conjunction with the omegaverse stuff, which is why im reccing it. :)
