Not enough people talk about the fact that itâs entirely possible that the Emperor doesnât know that Omegon even exists
The twin primarchs of the Alpha Legion, Alpharius and Omegon
Iâm probably not going to draw any of the others but I wanted to do these two because I wanted to visualize the differences between them
Idea: The Emperor emits a constant low level psychic compulsion that makes anyone who speaks with him want to agree with him and follow his orders. He is unaware that it exists because itâs just sort of always been âonâ It does affect primarchs but to a lesser extent than other humans, though theoretically anyone could resist it given a strong enough will or conviction
Anarky fanart that I spent like an entire day that I should have been doing schoolwork on

I think I finally understand why people write fanfiction. itâs so aggravating when a piece of media doesnât engage with its premise - like maybe the implications were too dark, maybe if we followed it to its logical conclusion the main character would be irredeemable, maybe itâs too complicated, maybe itâs too flavourful (weird, horny, unflattering) so we only get a liiiitle bit of it sprinkled on top of an otherwise generic story
whatever the reason, we end up with a diet lite homogenized version of what the initial story promised us. it makes me pace around my house biting at my thumb, going ânoâŚ..no it couldâve been betterâŚ..I couldâve made it betterâŚ..â
Jokerâs pre-acid vat past: Part 1
I swear, Jokerâs gotta be one of the most interesting characters out there, for a shitload of reasons. But a huge part of the appeal is the shroud of mystery around him â no one 100% knows his past, and itâs the way most fans prefer it, Joker included. Him fully remembering who he was prior to the acid bath feels like peeking behind a magicianâs curtain, somehow. And it certainly doesnât help that over the years, Joker himself has told so many different versions of his past, with comics, movies and animated series going from psychopathic hitman to failed comedian to mobster and then back again.
But if The Killing Joke (and to an extent, The Three Jokers, but ugh â thatâs a whole different can of worms) have established one thing, itâs that Joker remembers something, he just always recounts it unreliably. He makes up stories around the broken pieces of memory he does have, reinventing his past again and again, but if one keeps in mind that there is a kernel of truth at the center of his lies⌠it perhaps becomes feasible to stitch together an idea of Jokerâs background.
This is me exorcising the Thoughts TM about Jokerâs pre-acid past, Part 1. Fair warning, this gets loooong. Joker likely had a very shitty childhood â in a twisted mirror to Batmanâs (and once again, the way these two are constantly inverted makes me foam at the mouth). Full rambles under the cut, and with appropriate warnings: discussions and depictions of physical and sexual abuse, rape, and murder. Spoilers too, I guess, for a lot of gratuitous comic book panels from more than one source.

JOKER NICKNAMES FOR BATMAN. PART TWO.âĄ
Iâm making a list of all of Jokerâs nicknames that he uses, this will be great reference material
A while ago I got under someone's skin for referencing Joker's surprising delayed reaction to killing Jason Todd, and since then I've been thinking it's worth digging into as an interesting element of Joker's characterization.
Of course, first thing's first: Jason's murder in Batman (1940) #427, as originally presented in 1988.
#this is so good!! so excited it's out#to me there'll always be this meta component to it too#Joker's been shown to break the fourth wall multiple times. and be much more aware of... the audience and the fact he might be fictional#and how would a character like that feel about essentially being forced by a poll to commit murder?#'cause that's the thing right. it wasn't Joker's choice. no writer out there went 'hey this would make narrative sense for him to do'#like Moore did in TKJ. it's awful what he did to Barbara but there was reasoning behind it#in DitF it's just. they ran a poll if to kill Robin or not and Joker had to do it as the designated 'Batman's worst villain'#so my headcanon is that his discomfort towards what he did to Jason is partly due to this too#he HAS to double down on it. tell himself HE wanted to do it and it wasn't a mistake or external forces playing him#because the alternative is much worse#joker#jason todd#joker meta (distort-opia)
Bring back Joker's meta-awareness! Been slim pickings in the last decade or so. TMWSL sort of referenced it, and Azzarello did that Cuckoo's Nest pastiche, but it's not the same. :(
Has there been moments when Joker had been eluded to knowing he's a fictional character, at least in some part and/or breaking the fourth wall? I didn't know about that so I'm curious
Oh yes, plenty!
He does it a couple of times in Superman: Emperor Joker, the comic in which Joker gets Mr. Mxyzptlk's powers. For instance, he talks to the audience:
God, this story though... It has so much commentary on Joker's meta-awareness. He becomes a God who can shape reality, but deep down he senses it's not actually reality (because it's all fictional). No matter what he does to escape the narrative, he cannot. Batman is still essential to him as a character; he can't ever erase Batman from the Universe, he's beholden to him. And that's what Clark uses to defeat Joker. A fascinating story, and if you haven't read it, I fully recommend it.
Moving on, another entertaining case of Joker breaking the fourth wall is the comic series Joker's Asylum (2008), in which Joker talks directly to the audience, presenting us with stories about each of the Gotham Rogues. For example, in Two-Face's one-shot, he tells you to turn the page:
Another classic example of interfering with page-turning is from The Sign of the Joker, or Detective Comics (1937) #476:
Although, regarding this topic, I most dearly recommend Batman's 80-Page Giant 2010 -- Reality Check, since it's literally about Joker's meta-awareness. The short story tackles Joker's partial knowledge of being a fictional character who senses that there is an audience, a narrative around him...
Hah. But the fascinating thing with Joker is, as this comic later shows, Joker isn't sure. He's not entirely certain that he isn't real (keeping in theme with Superman: Emperor Joker, too).
Joker's status as a cosmic trickster, a super-sane mad genius, affords him some insight into his existence that other characters don't get. However, he still doesn't fully know he's just a comic book character. One could even argue that Joker's perception of being fictional is part of what is driving him mad within Universe. On some level, he knows that the world around him doesn't really matter, doesn't really exist, so he obviously feels that he can do anything he wants -- but no one else can sense what he does, so he can't be sure.
Thus, he tells himself, "I must be crazy." I talked about this before, about Joker (and Bruce's) need to believe that Joker is insane, even though... well, he isn't. Not in the classical sense. He's clearly mentally ill, but he is in control of his own actions and fully capable of reason. Which is also what the doctor who's been assessing Joker's mental state in this comic says; that Joker is something they don't have words for, but he isn't crazy. And after he kills him, this is Joker's reaction:
He doubts it. He doubts his perception of our existence as the readers; he's not sure of himself, and he needs to believe he's crazy. Because the alternative is that he's right. The alternative is that the world he lives in has zero meaning -- it's all made-up, and no one has any control over what they do. This is also one of the main reasons Joker needs Batman; deep down, he needs Bruce to prove him wrong. There's a part of him that wishes that Batman would prove to him that the world isn't absurd and meaningless, that there is a point to being alive, that there is something out there to live for.
Of course, the tragedy is that Joker is right. Joker senses that their world isn't real, but Batman never will.
I do love Joker's meta awareness, it allows for a satisfying interpretation of his character that takes into account all of his... peculiarities. Because really Joker is an analyst nightmare, full of contradictions, and the fact that he's been written by multiple writers over the span of 83 years isn't helping.
Taking into consideration that he's at least to some degree aware of how the narrative works makes his character come together and paints a whole picture that makes some kind of sense.

Joker and Martha
A friend of mine said that DC should have made Martha Wayne Catwoman instead of the Joker in Flashpoint because, it made more sense to parallel Thomas and Martha with Bruce and Selina because, of them being romantic partners but, I disagree. Martha even prior to Flashpoint had a lot of things in common with the Joker, both suffered from mental illness at a young age and were admitted to Arkham. As shown in âthe Batman 2022â and âthe Further Adventures of the Jokerâ, both completely lost their minds when they lost their child, Martha in Flashpoint and Joker in âGotham Knights #54â,
they both love their respective Batman and constantly hurt them due to this warped sense of love Martha in âFlashpointâ and Joker in âEuropaâ, both self harmed themselves to prove a point to their Batman Martha in âFlashpointâ and Joker in âA Death of the Familyâ
both were jealous of Catwoman and shot her. Martha in âFlashpointâ and Joker in âPrelude to the Weddingâ.
The only person who could make them cry was their respective Batman Martha in âFlashpointâ Joker in âJoker Warâ the similarities between them donât stop there.
Both like reading in their spare time, both like purple, both have a set of pearls for special occasions, Bruce is the most important person in both of their lives, both dabble in art, both play the piano, both speak French, both had curly hair, both like to dance, both loved to go see plays, sadly both shared the same bleak philosophy of life after their childâs death.
Not only this but, the few times they met in comics the two instantly bonded. In âI am a Gunâ Martha is very sympathetic with the Joker and consoles him by stating her son will help him, then encourages Bruce to do so. In âStreets of Gothamâ Martha instantly takes a liking to a young Joker. She cares for him and keeps him with her at the clinic. The young Joker is so found of Martha that he risks his own life to save her and, ends up suffering a faith worse than death for doing so. As for Martha and Catwoman the only thing they have in common are the pearls Catwoman stole from Wayne Manor were originally Marthaâs as seen in âCatwoman New 52â.
