There’s something to be said about Caspar getting the second chance he was looking for with David, but in the monkey’s paw/genie wish way where it’s not his David. It’s kind of emblematic of how, when you’re a bad person in some way, you deserve the chance to grow and can even get it, but that doesn’t mean the people you hurt before you grew have to be the ones to give you that second chance. You’ll always have to live with the consequences of your actions — Caspar will always have to live with the fact that his actions caused his son to run away. But… love still finds a way to cross impossible gaps. Maybe not in this universe, but the next.
