We know Harry was abused as a kid—it glaringly obvious in the books—, but my question is what exactly did this abuse do to him in the long run?

I think for Harry it wasn’t as obvious as it could have been, but to me he seems like a wonderful example of an abuse victim in a way. When he gets angry it’s usually cold and calculated, Harry usually not being too loud as not to draw attention but to let his anger be known. He doesn’t like attention, usually avoiding it if he can and getting uncomfortable from it, I think it could be traced back to attention usually having negative consequences.

While he may go to an adult first when a problem arises (McGonagall and the Philosophers Stone) if the adult proves incompetent he will take matters into his own hands and not bother getting their help again. He also doesn’t respect them like he could and treats those who treat him badly the same, Snape a wonderful example of this. To him he is on the same level as them and thinks lowly of them at the same time.

When Ron and Hermione are bickering it annoys him and often causes him to blow if it goes on too long or he’s pulled into it. I think raised voices or arguing are a type of trigger, not one that’s very strong but can makes him feel more on edge and slightly more antsy. I also think him being treated as “less than”—or like a child—is also a slight trigger because that’s how the Dursleys would treat him.

He also usually is very unaware of the people around him that don’t make a difference in his life, failing to know the names of kids he’s gone to school with for years. To me it seems like someone that’s always only relied on themselves is too busy caring for themselves that they don’t have time to care about people that don’t matter. These people also fade to the back because they don’t pose a risk in any way nor do they bring him any joy. At the Dursleys he wouldn’t have had time to care about kids at school because he’s too busy thinking about how to escape Dudley and his gang and not get on his aunt and uncles bad side.

The sorting hat also mentioned how Harry had a thirst to prove himself, something that’s common among abused kids because they want to be treated better. His risk taking behavior could have been mixed with this because a subconscious part of his mind thought it the only way to be liked due to him being a celebrity.

I also noticed how he doesn’t really branch out when it comes to meeting people, simply going with the flow. It could be because as a kid if he went up to Petunia, Vernon or Dudley for attention it never ended well and the kids at his primary school probably shied away because he was a target for bullying. The logical decision is to let people come to him and prove they want to be around, so he let Ron and Hermione come around without really reaching out.

Emotions also make him uncomfortable, seen with Cho crying around him. He doesn’t understand them likely because he was forced to push his away because he wasn’t allowed to ever be upset or too happy. Something that’s common in emotionally neglected children, it also points to his lack of empathy. While Harry may seem to care he does not come across as very empathetic for the average person unless it’s people he’s close with.

Even when Ron & Hermione are urging him to tell someone, he refuses and continues going to detention.

I’m @iminyourbedsheets and at my last doctor’s appointment (NO HATE TO THE DOCTOR BTW SHE WAS DOING HER JOB) my doctor was examining my height and stuff and she got to my weight and just said “honey have you been getting enough exercise?”. And she also recommended some healthy food options. And that’s how I found out I’m a fat ass. AND I BROUGHT THE BOWL LOL.

I’m Corvus and I guess mine is that I’ve had to deal with so many deaths (both human and animal) that I’ve lost count but when I decided to try and do a count I almost got to fifty (I can’t remember most of them anymore) and this was a couple of years ago when I was thirteen. Honestly, not all that bad considering the stuff in this thread lol

I’m actually pretty good for the most part though my lovely horrible luck is really trying to do me in this year already and we’re only in March! I think I have a blood curse or something because my family’s bad luck needs to be studied but it does make for some good jokes. I would blame me being an ao3 author on it but I’ve had this luck my entire life so I cannot blame the legendary curse, how unfortunate.

I actually have to start taking supplements and vitamins due to my diet but I have a very “fuck it” attitude so we’ll see just how poorly this will go. It takes a lot of convincing and pain/sickness to convince me to even take pain meds so…I think I’ll need to be harassed to even take them. One of the supplements smells weird and lowkey tastes weird if I burp or something so not very willing to take it lol. It smells similar to like bugs and foliage, I don’t know how to describe it but that’s close enough.

My birthday is also coming up and that’s a terrifying thought which is weird because as a kid I couldn’t wait for my birthday and now I kinda don’t want to grow up. It’s bittersweet in a way but I’m interested to see how this year will go for me.

Also, may I say going to school in a small town in America is hell on Earth! Like bro, why are you guys trying to do so much unconstitutional shit and why are random dudes debating about women healthcare and if trans people are real or not in the middle of class? Did mommy never teach you the concept of an inside thought or were you just too busy sucking your own dick to process her words? Like damn, tell me you’re an arrogant ass who’s too busy trying to get girls with your “amazing” build instead of developing a decent personality.

Gosh, my head hurts like crazy but other than stupid people, having to take supplements and my blood curse seeming to love either injuring/killing/making people in my life suicidal/getting someone in my family sick I’m chilling pretty much. I got some new interests which is fun and occupying my time, I’ve been hanging out with my friends and family and the good times are pretty good at overshadowing the bad. I might be going to an expo with my mama over the summer so that’s fun, I also went and saw my first ever musical which was awesome!

Our schl held a state lvl sports meet nd my branch wonnnnnn!!! I've got like- 13 gold medals, 7 silver, 9 bronze, nd 5 black ones for securing 4th place. I played the Volley ball, throw ball, tho kho, kabaddi, shot put, skipping, nd participated in 50 metres, 100 metres, 150 meters nd 200 metres running! I didn't participate in basketball, football, nd badminton. We stayed in another state for a week! It was a rly amazing experience.

Hmm, I'd think I'd learn how to use a dagger! Bcz they're small nd you can use them easily.

Hm, I think what makes me interested in a person is if they don’t exactly fit into any category if that makes sense. I often find myself very drawn towards the people that “stand out” or don’t conform to everyone else’s style, standards, beliefs and don’t bend to the pressure to conform. All of my friends and people I associate with usually are the oddballs, they don’t fit in but are kind and genuine. How about you?

Even if it turns into a “nightmare” at least you had a good time at some point and it’s not like you won’t have good times later on. I say just enjoy it while you can and don’t worry too much about it ending or taking a turn because the bad is what makes the good valuable. At least that’s how I live my life lol

I’ve never really fit in so I think that’s why I’m drawn to them. Kids have always found something about me that sets me apart from them and how I act doesn’t always get taken well so eventually my friendships with “normal” people dissolve really fast. I’m often called sarcastic when I’m being genuine by people but the odd people take what I say genuinely unless I don’t want them to. I also don’t have to always talk to them to keep the friendship strong

That’s so valid, I actually rarely have similar interests to my friends and end up getting their interests by listening and then watching/reading what they love and loving it too. What type of interests usually do you share with friends irl?
