not that i dont like solar power bc i do but........ if lorde really wanted to bless us with the ultimate summer banger her team could re-release no better and put it on spotify
no im not 'queer and getting a masters degree in environmental studies' because i like school or whatever it's because i read percy jackson at an impressionable age and never moved on from a hyperfixation with the hunters of artemis
personally the lattice method of multiplication is the reason i hate math
youre telling me that i can make some boxes with lines through them
solve the multiplication equation for each pair of individual digits and arrange them in the boxes just so
AND THEN ADD UP ALL THE NUMBERS IN EACH COLUMN AND GET THE RIGHT ANSWER????
this post taught me that not everyone learned the lattice method in elementary school
In grade school we learned the normal way to do multiplication one day and then the lattice way the next, except I was sick the day we learned the normal way and they never went back and reviewed it and neither did I and so to this day I only know how to use the lattice method
They literally never taught us the lattice method i have no idea what the fuck I'm looking at they just... fuckin taught us how to do multiplication omfg.
IM SO MAD THIS WOULD HAVE HELPED ME IMMENSELY IN MATH CLASS CUZ I AM VERY VISUAL
I couldnāt figure out the steps on that third pic so I looked it up AND NOW IM YELLING BC I NEVER LEARNED THIS AND ITS SO USEFUL FOR VISUAL LEARNERS

20.04.21 / found an antique shop on my way to the bookstore yesterday. everything that needed to get done most certainly did not get done but I still made progress, and that still holds as much merit regardless of pace or outcome. i just have to try again today. hope you have a lovely week ahead. take care ā”
Do you think those cat/dogs learning to talk with buttons thing is actually accurate? I know even primates apparently dont know how to parse human words (with regards to sign language) so i struggle to understand why dogs or cats suddenly understand complex english
They donāt actually understand what the buttons mean. These animals arenāt capable of processing language like we humans do and they tend to react more to your tone and visual cues then the actual words youāre saying.Ā
The buttons are just very basic operant conditioning. I very basic form of cognition in animals. They press the buttons because they are rewarded for doing so, not because they actually understand the meaning behind the buttons.
You can see in those videos (they do usually edit it out, but sometimes the creator of these videos just outright admits it) that it can take their pet something like 15 - 20 minutes to respond via the buttons.
Claims that the pets are asking questions ect. feel very staged / trained (like the below for example). Remember these videos are all coming from people on tiktok and people will do anything for a bit of internet fame. Scientific research has shown that dogs do not pass theĀ āmirror testā but the mirror test is a very outdated way to show self-recognition in animals.
You compare this to the language studies done by Pepperberg with African Grey Parrots like Alex; in which they were able to ask questions they werenāt already trained to ask, form sentences they werenāt previously trained to do, display self-recognition (via asking what colour they were), could understand syntax and form their own words eg. Alex called applesĀ ābanerriesā,Ā a combination of "banana" and "cherry", two fruits he was more familiar with.
I prefer not to touch on koko the gorilla because that research is already pretty widely criticised with a lack of actual data, and there was evidence of theĀ Clever Hans effect (her trainers' unconscious cues were prompting her to display specific signs).Ā
My personal theory is that what's actually going on is somewhere between "these dogs use language" and "these dogs are demonstrating their operant conditioning." Do I think these dogs are using language the way people do and actually forming sentences with syntax? No. But domestic cats and dogs very much want to communicate with us, to the point that they create entire sets of vocalizations solely for communicating with humans.. Pressing a button that says "outside" when they want to go outside is not actually different from my mom's dog going to the door and ringing a bell, nor is pressing a button that says "come" when they want to show you something any different from my cat running up, meowing, and then walking away to show me the bug he found in the living room.
Thatās all literally operant conditioning. You just gave examples of operant conditioningĀ š©š©š©š©

i have very fond memories of this drafty attic library. it's filled with books about fairy tales and peasant rituals and the roof creaks in the wind. i spent a lot of time there working on my ma thesis.
