something i really don’t want to get lost in the conversation about wonder man is simon and his family. i loved his family and their dynamic in the show so much. there is such a deep amount of love between simon, his mom, and his brother, and the flashbacks with his dad were absolutely darling. of course, they also show how important his dad was to all of them, but specifically for where we see simon at in the present.
honestly with the few comics i’ve read featuring simon and his brother, i was nervous for any mention of his family in an adaptation. partly because their father was abusive in the comics, and they definitely came from a troubled home, but primarily because eric is so violently racist lol. like, eric williams grim reaper can and should stay on the page, that guy is horrible. and obviously i knew that would change in some way in this show with simon being Black, but i really love what they did with eric, and how they depicted his and simon’s relationship. there’s tension, but it’s really well-done in showing the kind of strain when you know your sibling can do better for themselves and you want that for them because you love them, but you’re also frustrated because a lot of their issues they have are of their own making. and then on the receiving end of that just feeling and being so berated and like you can’t do anything right. and especially in simon’s case, having barely any friends because of his secret and even his brother not wanting to be his friend in the way he could have and need is a really interesting perspective. and, of course, when it matters most you see that love again and you get to see them have a deeply meaningful relationship.
i also think it was a great idea to have his parents be haitian immigrants; it adds a nice depth to his background. i really can’t express enough how much i adore his parents, too, though. they’re so lovely!
