Maybe Abigail hadn't planned on keeping on living. Maybe this attempt at escaping was a last desperate act of defiance, of rebellion against her seemingly immutable fate. Maybe she was too scared of killing herself because slitting her throat would make her too much like her father. She was probably hoping that nature would claim her, and Abigail Hobbs would disappear. And she did.

Dennis Whitaker was brought into this world at 21 years old.

Hiding multiple years in the Midwest did him some good. Helping out an old woman on her farm brought Dennis a sense of redemption, as if taking care of the lambs and calves would make up for the young girls he led to slaughter.

Despite not being religious, his mother was. Dennis started praying, almost falling into a full psychosis, getting desperate to be forgiven for his sins, ranging from the girls' murders to his unholy feelings.

Becoming a doctor felt like the only option for Dennis to redeem his bloodied soul. However, he promised himself to stay away from the psychiatric field, refusing to become even remotely similar to the man he left behind. Only by saving innocent people would he be able to fix what he and his father did, since giving up his own life felt more like mercy than justice, even though he keeps contemplating the idea.

Pittsburgh wasn't the obvious choice or a divine decision; it was simply the only place that would allow him to start anew. And even though Dennis would have preferred a city more farther away from the east coast, the city grew on him (like a mushroom, he would sometimes think ironically. Or maybe it was him who latched onto the city like a parasite).

Inserting himself back into society wasn't exactly smooth, and the lingering awkwardness surrounding him seems almost chronic at this point. His professors looked down upon him with pity, which he hated, but pity was always better than disgust. His lack of close friends didn't necessarily bother him, but he would lie if he stated that he wasn't feeling lonely. Fortunately, everything changed when Dennis started his rotation at PTMC's ED.

If you asked Dennis' coworkers, they would answer that the most noticeable thing about the man is his ever sad eyes. Less compassionate people would tell you it is the huge scar across his throat.
