I realized I'm spending an increasing amount of time at work explaining signs to customers.
"But it said 70% off!"
"No it said 'up to 70% off'."
"It said 20% off everything."
"No it said '20% off everything for military and first responders'."
Or people who pull stuff from the clearance rack and want to know how much it is when there's a sticker on it. A majority of the time they're confused that it's not an additional 70% off the clearance price when the sign clearly says "Clearance - Price as marked." (I mean, they really expected a shirt that was $30 marked down to $9.98 is going to ring up at $3.)
Or people just asking me how much something is while we're standing where it is on the sales floor. I just point to the sign with the price point on it and they invariably ask 'there isn't an additional discount?' (It's hard to hide my derision at this point. It's hard marked at $60, we're selling it for $19.99. That seems like a pretty good deal to me.)
I'm sure that a lot of it is due to poor reading comprehension. People just see one part and ignore the rest. It's just so exhausting. I've gotten to the point when people start walking toward me with the tag out I answer their question in a world weary tone of voice before they even ask it.
