Watching TNG and VOY in tandem while I draw really puts it all in perspective...Voyager's my first Star Trek so I couldn't truly appreciate what a miserable, terrifying situation these poor bastards are in on the daily upon first watch. Wesley has a doomed crush and Deanna's encouraging a deaf diplomat to have confidence in himself while B'Elanna's being operated on by an alien wearing her murdered crewmate's skinned face.

voyager episode where the a-plot is janeway, chakotay, and tuvok maneuvering through some diplomatically delicate philosophically ponderous negotiations while the b-plot is tom, harry, b’elanna, and seven doing the hangover but in space

the thematic throughline between these two plots is the difficulty in finding the “truth” when you only have biased/incomplete/contradictory information, so the a-plot has also got to involve some sort of imperfect reconstruction of events. maybe this particular civilization’s language doesn’t play well with the universal translator and they have to keep finding ways to work around that. a blend of the classic courtroom trek episode and tng’s darmok, with parallels to voy’s own living witness as well.

and of course this all comes full circle when the negotiations are this close to falling through but tom, harry, b’elanna, and seven barge into the room with some key piece of information that they learned while trying to reconstruct their wild night out, saving the day

b-plot gang hacks into seven’s cortical node in hopes it will shed some light on what happened but the only thing it has stored in its critical information only black box log from the previous night is memories of hot ladies dancing at the club. also a few of b’elanna herself looking cute and hot which seven very quickly brushes over

I don't know what is it exactly that Brent Spiner did or maybe it's just my interpretation of his acting, but he really makes Data feel like an android. From the future.

Even if he didn't have any makeup on or contact lenses, I'd be like "yeah that's Brent Spiner and that's an android." Maybe it's because his facial expressions are preset and even Data says the wildest things it's passable.

I'm in awe everytime he appears on screen, literally a test to one's acting chops.

I’ve actually thought about this a lot because I’ve had non-Trek friends roll their eyes when they see a picture of Data like, really? They painted a dude gold? That’s it? That’s supposed to make us think he’s a robot? But then they see Brent act and the instant suspension of disbelief that man creates pistol-whips them into the 24th century whether they want to be there or not.

I do think it comes down to Brent’s impeccable consistency. The facial expressions, mannerisms, movement, intonations, etc. In conjunction with the writers, he “found” Data very fast and honed that essence into a precision cut character.

That’s why it’s always so delightfully shocking when we see a “Data gets possessed” or “oh no! It’s Lore!” episode. We witness the pristine Data persona shatter into something unrecognizable even though the actor and his silly gold paint doesn’t change. Absolutely remarkable.

I think he has, as the industry folk say, catastrophic chops.

had a dream last night that the hot new trek ship taking over tumblr was Julian/Janeway. 90% of the fan works were epistolary fic where Julian gets really into the idea of the doomed mission of voyager and sends Janeway fanmail once they re-establish contact, which rapidly turns into a steamy long-distance romance that brings them both much needed distraction from their respective spirals into depression and gives fans free reign to write Janeway going full cougar. and it was so hugely popular in my dream like every third post on the dash was about them
