The Lao government has announced the suspension of imports of most fossil fuel-powered vehicles until the end of 2026 and imposed strict price controls on electric vehicles to ensure affordability.
On 12 May, the Office of the Prime Minister imposed immediate implementation of the directive.
Under the new policy, only passenger vehicles, project and production vehicles, and vehicles for specialized functions are exempt from the import ban.
Authorities have instructed the Ministry to develop a comprehensive price structure covering factory costs, transport, taxes, and profit ceilings for every class and brand of EV sold in Laos.
Companies found to exceed these limits face fines and additional penalties.
“If any company takes the opportunity to raise the price of electric vehicles unreasonably, there will be strict measures to impose fines and penalties,” the notice stated.

sure, my humble self is also prone to criticizing liberals who overfocus on blaming all systematic social ills on a few easily hateful personalities such as donald trump, jeff bezos, etc. but even while seeing the bigger picture is it not natural reaction of oppressed to AT VERY LEAST dislike those individuals? what does it say about george orwell that he couldn't bring himself to do it? if you asked any socialist during 1930s if they hated hitler they would say or feel that the answer yes. but george orwell self admitted that he did not even DISLIKE hitler. here orwell's "socialist" mask slipped and he showed where his real loyalties lie. because it's clear now this sentiment of orwell was pretty popular among british bourgeois elites.
not to mention, he didn't accidentally blurt this out during an interview, or anything. he published this in New English Weekly in March 1940. and he went out of his way to emphasize the point, to "put it on record".
this was 6 months after Britain went to war with Nazi Germany, a time during which he was vocally pro-war. but 14 months before, he had been explicitly against war with the Nazis. he was ready to engage in anti-war activities (printing anti-war pamphlets...) even against the law.
George Orwell was a British colonial cop, snitch and BBC propagandist. his ties to the CIA are the reason the CIA acquired the rights to an animated movie version of Animal Farm, and financed its production.
this is a man who saw fascism in Nazism's enemies first, and in Nazism last. this is a man who understood, in his bones, the power of words, who wrote to a large audience to justify his neutrality towards Hitler.

i know everyone says they hate being online and i understand why and i get it and its bad and everything but (whispering like i'm at a sleepover) i actually really like being online
Of course no heuristic is universally true, but I think if you're an american who considers themselves "progressive" this is a rule of thumb you should probably be considering more often: If the conversation you're currently participating in is only able to happen because someone is going out of their way to speak *your* language, that's probably not the person who's most in need of informing themselves about the other's country in this conversation.
It's just such a common pattern, how when you disagree with an american about something like e.g. the idea that it's unfair to hate members of the US military, the american will always walk into the conversation with the unshakable assumption that the only reason why you could possibly disagree with them is because *you* are not informed enough about *their* country, that you obviously are not aware of how bad veterans have it once they return home, or of the conditions of poverty and systemic inequality that might drive someone to see the military as their only chance for upward mobility, or of how aggressively military recruiters campaign, or how much propaganda they make, or how they take advantage of systemic inequality to recruit from disadvantaged populations, or a million other things which they will inherently assume you lack an understanding of and proceed to condescendingly explain to you.
All the while they refuse to entertain even for one second the possibility that it might be *them* who has something to learn about *your* country, that they might not be informed enough about the violence and terror the US military enacted upon your people, that *they* might lack some awareness or understanding of the cruelty and suffering that those poor, propagandized, systemically disenfranchised kids lied to by recruiters gladly participated in enacting which might drive even people who are fully aware of their conditions to still harbor resentment towards them. The possibility that the other person might have a better understanding of the conditions in their country than viceversa and still disagree with them will never even cross their mind.
