not to be overtly religious but thank god for things like washing machines. driers. microwaves. refrigerators. dishwashers. thank god as in thank god for the capable hands and incredible minds that created them.
nonsense words such as "blorbo" and "skibidi" are outliers and a minuscule minority and thus do not invalidate that statement
Aro and ace activism is housing reform, is well-funded public housing, is an expansion of affordable housing, is allowing single people to get affordable and public housing, is rent controls to make it possible for single people to be able to afford to live alone on a single salary.
Aro and ace activism is healthcare reform, so that no one needs to rely on a spouse for health insurance, so that healthcare is available to everybody regardless of income, so that no oneâs lived experiences or basic dignity are dismissed or overridden by doctors
Aro and ace activism is well-funded and expansive public transit, so that you donât need to have someone on hand to drive you places if you are incapacitated, so that you donât have to pay for an ambulance if you need to get to the hospital quickly
Aro and ace activism is disability and elder care services, so that no one needs a spouse to care for them, so that no one needs children to care for them, so that marriage is not a bind for disabled people, so that people on disability who want to and can live alone can
Aro and ace activism is community-building, itâs public events, itâs free social activities, itâs mutual aid, itâs activities that bring community members together without socializing relying on just a romantic partner
Aro and ace activism is developing a culture of believing when people tell you who they are and what they want rather than assuming you know them better than they know themselves
Aro and ace activism means a better world for people without ânormativeâ desires or ânormativeâ social support, which means a better world for everybody
#isn't this just aro activism? like op is right but this is like. about relationships
Quick question do you think ace people donât have a complicated relationship to relationships. Do you think ace people donât have a significant incentive to not tie basic quality of life things to having a partner and children. Do you think ace people are respected by doctors or society.
#fighting amatonormativity is primarily an aro thing but there is overlap because even alloromantic aces are affected by it!
Amatonormativity affects everyone.
Fighting amatonormativity is an everyone thing.
Making sure everyone can get healthcare regardless of if they have a family member (expected to be a spouse, if you are an adult) who can care for you when youâre ill or injured, can drive you to your doctorsâ appointments, who can pay for your medication and medical care when you canât work, is disability activism. The fact that we have woefully inadequate infrastructure for most of that because your spouse or romantic partner is expected to provide it is, among other thing, amatonormativity.
Untying basic rights in finances, healthcare, housing, immigration, and hospital visitation from marriage so that those tights canât be taken away if gay marriage is restricted is gay activism. The fact that these rights are tied to marriage in the first place is amatonormativity.
Untying these things from marriage is also polyamorous activism, so in a poly relationship youâre not left with one partner who gets full rights and another partner who does not. It is activism for anyone with any kind of intimate relationship with more than one non-blood-related person. (Hell, itâs activism for people who have a spouse and a sibling all part of the same household.) The fact that marriage, the only taken-seriously relationship you can legally form between individuals as adults, is between two non-blood-related people in a romantic relationship and no other options, is amatonormativity.
Making it easier to survive on your own without a familial support system is queer activism, for all the queer people who donât have those support systems! And the fact that your spouse is supposed to be your entire support system as an adult is amatonormativity.
Making it so elderly people who donât have a spouse or children can still get care when they can no longer take care of themselves is elder activism. The fact that your spouse and children are supposed to be the ones who handle that and if you donât have any then fuck you I guess, is amatonormativity.
Making it possible for a woman to leave her abusive husband, and not lose everything, to live on her own, maybe with her children, and have a place to live and money to live on and infrastructure to support her living without a spouse, is just about the most basic feminist activism that there is. And the fact that society is structured such that staying in an abusive relationship can look like a better option than trying to leave is because ofâimagine it!âamatonormativity!
You also just⌠donât need to be aro to be single. Plenty of single people are not aromantic and they deserve to have a house and healthcare too.
I really, really wish people would stop acting like amatonormativity is a niche aro issue that doesnât really matter because it only affects aros. (Also wish people would stop acting like aros are not ace and aces are not aro and ace people have no reason to have an opinion on amatonormativity because it just doesnât affect them.)(Amatonormativity affects everybody.)
how do you pronounce the honourific "Ms." in english
"miss"
"miz"
other
unsure/see results
really good "shocking number of people are confidently objectively demonstrably completely wrong" poll
i am losing my fucking mind
#we dont use honorifics in my first language so whenever i have to select options (usually for flights) im always so confused#like what is actually the difference between miss and ms#i like miss bc it sounds more historical and im a historian so
"Miss" means an unmarried woman. "Mrs." means a married woman. (both of these have origins in the word "mistress" as in "mistress of the house".)
"Ms." - prounounced MIZ, btw - is a third option popularized by gloria steinem in the 70s - mainly through her feminist magazine Ms. - which is meant to be a neutral term, usable for any and all women regardless of marital status (hence the soul destroying irony of the tags above). it gained wider general acceptance when geraldine ferraro, the first woman to be nominated as VP on a national major party ticket, started using it widely to avoid confusion, since she was married but used her maiden name professionally. eventually over the years it came into common use though i do think the brits are a little more critical of it than americans (as far as i'm aware lol)
"obscure facts only a tumblr user would know" and it's one of the most influential institutions of second wave american feminism. PLEASE open the schools
Hi. I'm an unmarried woman in her forties. I use Ms. and pronounce it "miz", though I don't correct people who accidentally use a soft S. I use Ms. because it's no one's business but my own whether I'm married, to a man or anyone else, and that's what Ms. means. It means fuck off, my marital status is irrelevant, just as it is for every man who uses Mr.
I've had people (usually children) ask me at work if I'm a missus or a miss. I have replied that I am a miz, full stop. And when they pressed for which one I was REALLY, I have replied, "Why? Are you going to treat me differently depending on whether there's a ring somewhere?"
That's what Ms. is for. That is its linguistic function. It says, "This is an adult woman," and nothing else. Nothing else is necessary, and in my case, nothing else is desired.
I also use miz for other women unless and until they express a preference for something else because I don't magically know everyone else's marital status when I meet them. That's a courtesyâI'm declining to assume marital status and allowing them to decide whether they wish to declare it.
Also, I've taught English and worked as an editor for twenty years. I am quite literally the grammar police. This use of Ms. is a standard construction. If you didn't learn it in school, someone failed you.
âObscure factsâ Boo boo I was taught it in elementary school. One with a state standardized curriculum.
Ms. is marriage-neutral and itâs pronounced Miz. It is deliberately different from Miss.
Since I started work in the late 80's (and as admin on the HR side of a large company, I saw a lot of people's names) "Ms." (always pronounced Mz) has been in common usage in the UK too.
My baby Qais will die because his surgery is delayed. As an oppressed mother in Gaza, I am forced to postpone his surgical procedure ânot by choice, but because this post is ignored and not shared.
I will not forgive anyone who watches my child fade and scrolls past without mercy. One share delays his deathâbut one donation can end this waiting and bring his surgery closer today.
Every minute without a donation steals something from Qaisâhis strength, his breath, his chance to live. I beg you as a mother: please donate now. Your donation is the difference between life and loss.
Please donate now Gofundme
While we wait for a surgery we cannot afford, my baby Qais continues to suffer every day. Time is not standing still for him. Please donate now and help us reach treatment before it becomes too late.
My baby Qais has run out of medicine, and I urgently need to buy a new supply, but I simply do not have the money. To everyone who helped us before, I am begging you from my heartâplease consider supporting Qais again today. Your kindness has kept him going, and he still desperately needs your help.
Please don't leave Qais alone. Donate today and save him.

when i was a tiny baby queer (aka a 24-year-old), i went to my first pride festival probably three months after i kicked ex-gay therapy to the curb and came out to my parents. being the people they are, my parents came with me. they werenât really sure about this whole gay thing, but they loved me and wanted me to be safe and happy and wanted to be involved in what was important to me, so they came along. (i also think my mother still might have thought i might get drugged or murdered or beaten by a protester of which there were plenty.)
anyway i wanted a memento of my first pride, you know, and this one vendor was selling keyrings, and i liked it, so i bought one. do you remember those italian charm bracelets that were all the rage like 10-15 years ago? it was a keychain like that, and it had a rainbow rooster, a rainbow cat, and then just a rainbow, and so I bought it.
i run into my mom a couple of vendors over and she goes oh you bought something? whatâd you get? so i showed her, and i was like, âIâm not sure why itâs a rooster and a cat. Seems kind of random. But I liked the rainbows.â
and my mom, who was some form of ministerâs wife for most of my childhood and teenagerhood, stares at me like she thinks iâm joking.
âWhat?â i say.
ââŚitâs a cock and a pussy, Jules,â she says flatly, and that is the story of how i died at the age of 24 while attending my first pride festival.
I love how every June this one gets dug up and passed around again, lmao.
