What is danganronpa anyways? Danganronpa consists of Three Main games, Two less main games, Two Anime Adaptations, and a handful of Novels and Manga.

The three main games are in order: Trigger Happy Havoc, Goodbye Despair, and Ultra Despair Girls, aka Danganronpa Another Episode. The less major games are Danganronpa S, which is a fluff game where every one of the characters is on a beach vacation, and Killing Harmony, which is technically a mainline game but has no connection to the rest of the series in terms of plot, characters, or lore.

The premise of these games is that there is a school called Hopes Peak Academy, which collects the most talented students in Japan, and hones their abilities. However, the students time there goes wrong, and they end up in a killing game, the rules being they cannot escape unless they kill and get away with it.

There is an overarching story in the Hopes Peak Saga, which excludes Killing harmony.

The manga are mostly adaptations of the mainline games, with some being anthology but they are by no means essential reading. There are also a number of Light Novels, however most if not all of them are fan translations because they have no official English release.

There’s a LOT of dangaronpa, but here’s some of the more important ones:

Main Games: Trigger Happy Havoc, Goodbye Despair, Killing Harmony

Optionally, though knowing some of its lore is useful: Ultra Despair Girls. I hesitate to put it as essential simply because I haven’t played it and I know it’s tough to get through. I would recommend possibly the manga (by Kyosuke Suga) or just reading the wiki, which is what I did.

Manga: If you end up really enjoying the antagonist of Goodbye Despair, then I recommend you read his POV manga, Ultimate Luck and Hope and Despair, which is a retelling of the second game through his narration. There’s also adaptations of the games, and manga that fill in things such as the comic anthologies, 4koma KINGS, Gaiden Killer Killer, but those aren’t essential.

Novels: Danganronpa Zero is probably the number one I recommend you read because it’s got a lot of lore, I do know of a few fan translations. DR: IF is at the end of the second game I believe, and if you enjoy the cast of THH, then Kirigiri, Togami, Hagakure, all have light novels dedicated to them, again they probably don’t have official translations but I’m gonna find them eventually.

Anime: DR3 The End Of Hope Peak Academy (not to be confused with V3: Killing Harmony) is the prequel and sequel and Inbetweens of Danganronpa 1 and 2. It isn’t particularly well liked, but it is canon and holds some lore that helps fill in what all happened to cause the games. There’s also 2.5, which is another Nagito Komaeda POV.

I’m deep in the dr trenches, I have watched the Game Grumps Playthrough of Danganronpa THH, I am playing Goodbye Despair, and I got halfway through V3 playthrough. The franchise has pretty much infinite content, but you only *really* need Dr1, Dr2, Dr0, Ultra Despair Girls and Dr3 Anime to have a full grasp on the hopes peak saga.

V3 is simpler even, you literally just need the game itself, though I will say there are a lot of references in it to the other games.

Now here’s the tough part. I cannot imagine recommending this series without mentioning the content of it is not for everyone. The games are all solidly rated M for violence, moderate sexual content, mentions of drug abuse, abuse, sexual abuse, child sexual abuse, graphic violence, medical malpractice, major character death, graphic depictions of injuries, Strong Language, and so much more that I honestly can’t remember because I don’t notice these things anymore. These topics are not always handled well, with topics of mental health and sexual assault being standouts in my mind. The games frequently sexualize the characters, often distastefully.

Do NOT enter this franchise underplaying this warning. It is dark. You will likely be uncomfortable at points.

I would start with the Trigger Happy Havoc game, see how you feel. It’s the launching point of the series, and it’s imo the least hard to get past. The game grumps playthrough is on YouTube and highly enjoyable, if you can’t get the game yourself.

The games are available on Steam, but also on the mobile app store for IOS, and android I believe.
