The goblin shark had only previously been seen when caught by fishermen and they died shortly afterward.
So this is what a Goblin Shark actually looks likeβ¦
I love it
here's a secret: whatever you're doing, you have to root for your peers with all your heart because it forces you to root for yourself too. I've seen people in various spheres of my life (workplaces, education, art, activism) fall into the trap of envy and resentment when they see others succeed while they struggle, and it always always goes hand in hand with them pulling back and giving up and stagnating.
when you let yourself get sour grapes about shit, you tacitly give up on yourself. when you sit around hoping other people will flop and fail so you can catch up to them, you stop trying. it's a fantasy of mediocrity, the vain wish that other people would walk so you could take the gold medal at a jog. wouldn't you rather come last place at 27mph?
Iβve been kicking around a thought lately that when it comes to SFF we could probably bypass some of the perennial political vs. apolitical vs. everything-is-political-apolitical-storytelling-doesnβt-exist by instead formulating a spectrum from politically coherent to politically incoherent
Essentially, politically coherent works are works where the political message of the story is supported by all (or at least most) of the major story elements, and a politically incoherent work is a story where the political messages of different elements are seemingly all shooting off on different vectors.
The nice thing about this is it can bypass authorial intent (and the discussion of whether intent matters). This is about the text.
Like, politically incoherent works that had no authorial thought behind them are a dime a dozen of course, and politically coherent works that clearly had a lot of authorial thought are if not equally common than at least easy to spot. But there are also plenty of works that are politically coherent without the author intending them that wayβlike, whatever faults there are with Project Hail Mary, the overall opinion the book has about the nature of humanity & of science is consistent throughout. Likewise there are stories where the authors clearly meant a coherent political point and totally wiffed it. (The works @specialagentartemis has collectively termed βcozy colonialismβ come to mind)
So thereβs a utility in replacing the question βis this story political?β (Yes, always, but if the answer is always yes the question becomes kinda useless) with βIs this story politically coherent?β Because a yes or no there will tell a prospective reader something about what to expect.

theres a reason u associate east asians with femininity and black people with masculinity and it has nothing to do with actual masculine or feminine βbehaviorβ and everything to do with race science π u have been taught race science, u havenβt unlearned race science ππππ READ A BOOK ABOUT RACISMMMM
my philosophy on βcozyβ is that true coziness requires juxtaposition. sitting around a fire in the winter is cozy because the outside is cold, right? if thereβs no hardship to take shelter from, peace quickly becomes unremarkable. now, i do think we should strive for peace being unremarkable in real life, but if youβre making a work of fiction thatβs supposed to inspire feelings of βcoziness,β you need to strike a balance. if part of the game is βcustomize your house!β i need to feel some sense of relief from returning home. i stand by my previous statement that night in the woods is the coziest game ive ever played, and it doesnβt even market itself as a βcozy game.β it feels cozy because itβs a game about how our friendships give us reasons to keep holding on even under systems that are apathetic (at best) to our suffering. night in the woods says, βyes, you are a small, insignificant speck in a vast sea that will eventually drown you, but thereβs a forest on the outskirts in town where you can do dumb shit with your friend, and a lake you can sit by while you talk about your struggles.β and thatβs beautiful to me. thatβs what peace actually feels like.
hi, unfortunately i have to make a new dono post... rent is due soon, and i have other expenses coming up as well, including my doctors appointment to renew all my prescriptions, and the meds themselves. the heatwave here is over now and i've finally been able to start making up for the time it took out of my life, but i'm still very much behind on my work. as much as i'd love to not have to ask for help once again, it is what it is... my disability continues to hold me back significantly in my sincere efforts to get back into a sustainable rhythm and no longer be in this sort of permacrisis.
to pay for my rent this month i need $560. any amount helps, of course, and i very much appreciate sharing this post.

If you're a new writer and you're asking yourself "is this too personal, is this too much, will people think this is weird" that feeling is the exact location of your actual voice. The stuff that makes you want to close the laptop is the stuff nobody else could write. The safe version is always worse. Always. I have never once read something and thought "this would have been better if it was a little less honest." go further. It's always go further.

my favorite Trent Reznor pics in the world, heβs straight Flooping it
Something that tilts me about the way online culture has developed is that it feels like no one knows how to be a proper fucking provocateur anymore. Like people have been making "edgy" art for as long as the written word has existed but there is a certain social contract that comes with putting something out into the world that you know will offend people, which is that the offense is to be expected. It annoys me to no end when someone puts something out into the world that is so obviously offensive in some way shape or form and then spends all day complaining about people trying to "cancel" them or that no one respects "free expression" or that their critics are being "puritanical" or whatever. Like I'm sorry if you're going to say something obviously provocative I don't wanna hear you whining like a little bitch baby when people are provoked. Cause like no shit my guy what did you think was going to happen????
This is what so many people sound like to me
I cannot recommend bringing your heritage and culture into how you view media enough.
It is important to consider the culture of the person who created the piece, absolutely; but the different perspectives offered by the viewers is fascinating in and of itself and does not always detract from the message.
As an example, when I was younger, I watched Schindler's List. This movie is famously shot in black and white except for one section, concerning a little girl in a red coat. The camera follows her until her eventual death.
I am Turtle Island Indigenous and I was always taught that the only color spirits could see was red, because it is the color of life and blood.
So the second the girl in the red jacket came on screen, something inside me chilled with fear.
The only color in the movie was that red. At some point, I, the viewer, had died.
I remember sobbing at the sight of the burning human piles that were shown, convinced I was buried in there somewhere. The reason I had only seen red on the girl was that my death was recent. I was the ash in the air mistaken for snow. I had died before her and had followed her, helplessly, until she followed me.
The message I got for that was maybe not what the creator had intended: that there was no "being clever enough" or "good enough" or "kind enough" that would shield or protect you from such a massive tidal wave of evil.
You are not exempt from tragedy, that red jacket whispered. You are not special.
When I told some of my white friends about my experience with viewing Schindler's List, some were shocked and the rest just out-and-out mocked me for my "media illiteracy".
"it was just a filming trick to make you feel something," I remember one saying, which terrified me. How had he not felt anything even before she showed up?
However, when I repeated my viewing to a college class, they were fascinated. The implications of what I had seen and felt made the film all the more terrifying and solemn. It encouraged a lot of people to try to ask themselves what media meant from a cultural perspective, where they hadn't done that before.
