much of my frustration with the idea that fanwork and porn are above criticism is that i find that behavior only ever reinforces the idea that fanwork and porn are not real art forms and are a "lower" form of creative work, if a creative work at all

there's many layers here. why are fetishes not able to be analyzed like motifs and themes in works are? what is the aim of using a fetish with this work and what is it saying? by using x character from y series, what is the transformative change being made and how does the fanwork engage (or chooses not to engage) with the original work? what do the writing choices say about the implicit biases of the fan author, and what analysis could you make out of that? how does the fan author position themselves in relation to the original author, why might being too overly positive, or overly negative, affect the way they have reinterpreted these themes?

For me a big part of “sex work is work” is that sex work should be socially viewed as totally legitimate work. I should be able to put sex work on my resume. I should be able to lean on the skills and knowledge I gain in this field and have that experience be respected. Right now I have a gap in my resume. But I’m also consistently doing advertising, social media management, inventory, merchandising, customer service, upselling!!! I’m working self directed, I’m solely responsible for every aspect of my business. I deserve respect, fuck.
