nothing super new (to me, avid luke prokop news watcher) in The Hockey Player except:

the general severity of his relationship with his dad. he had talked about his extremely rocky coming out to his dad in a now deleted podcast. and i feel like they don't even mention in the documentary that after he finds out his dad knows, he leaves home and doesn't come back or speak to his dad for a week or two. but the discussion of the coach-father relationship, sleepovers with teammates to avoid his dad yelling at him, etc. i feel like he's only lightly implied before.

this was a super brief and out of context clip, so there could definitely definitely be more to the story, but it was interesting to me that lucas ciona guessed rather than/before being come out to. i feel like a lot of straight guys would simply never consider their friend could be gay, and especially not for something as easy-to-make-other-excuses-in-your-mind-for as not hooking up with a girl

anyway. really not much new.

also kinda wild the whole documentary is about trailblazing/the loneliness of pioneering and then when they talk about the pride tape ban/unban they say the nhl reversed their decision due to "feedback from players, fans, and advocacy groups", while notably one player acted in defiance of the ban alone. would've been a great opportunity to highlight the ways allies have created and can create change in the culture by rejecting the status quo of conformity. feels like a massive oversight from both a documentary and storytelling perspective

He wasn’t tagged. He didn’t like the post. The photo of him and Jamie was THIRTEENTH in a carousel of nineteen photos. Within an hour of the post going up, Trevor Zegras swiped twelve times and then hit Add to Story on main so we would all have to look at him and the boybestfriend he scored his first goal with and then almost lost forever and then got back and played meaningful hockey with in the playoffs together being celebrated by the NHL on National Best Friends Day. I fucking hate this man what the fuck.
