So what I think is that there's this default belief in patriarchy that men are superior to women and therefore the "masculine" sphere is superior to the "feminine" sphere. And so, as feminists have fought to expand the number of allowable female activities, men (on the aggregate over generations) have retreated from those activities because they're now seen as "feminine", and so partaking in them is incommensurate with their belief in their own superiority. For me, what makes Charles compelling is that he clearly wants it so much and is incredibly tenacious. The lows can get really low but the highs hit like crack. I think living through Monza 24 changed my brain chemistry permanently when it comes to Charles. I mean this the most lovely way possible, but maybe you had to unfollow because at the end of the day they're not your "people". They're Charles fans. You're a Ferrari fan, there's a difference. It doesn't mean there's a right or wrong but when shit like this happens you're always going to find the positive because at the end of the day you care more that it's a red car winning. From a Charles fan point of view, there's barely a positive. His teammate has 40 points over him and there has been other Charles fans already switching up to him. There's everything against him at the moment. two races without points, a teammate way more comfortable in the car and that will make ferrari obviously prioritize that guy more now. It's not the end for you because it's a win win situation on your perspective. And it's okay, but don't make it into something to patronize Charles fans just because you're not one.

i think us charles fans (yes i skimmed your essay, no i do not agree thank you!) can often get caught down in eternal doom and gloom so much that we love listing the negatives and the endless bad luck in any weekend and not only does this make all of us as a collective absolutely miserable but the negativity in my head is also the absolute antithesis to being a charles fan, because being a charles fan is about the dreaming. it’s about unrelenting hope.

ultimately i want to enjoy my sports experience but im going to be real and honest about the guy i support. he didn’t have the best weekend, sigh, that’s annoying. yes his teammate won while he dnfed and sigh that’s also annoying because im going to have to be subject to the most annoying thinkpieces. and no I’m not going to negate the bad weekend by listing off achievements in his personal life like having a wife or a family or friends or material possessions because these things mean nothing in my support of him. i support and believe in him as a racing driver. he didn’t have the best weekend but i have faith in his grit and ability and tenacity to turn it all around. I’m not going to dwell on the negatives because i think frankly that will just attract more ill fortune to him, i’d rather focus on just having unrelenting faith that THIS guy is indeed the correct guy to support and the car is there so he’s going to prove me right <3
