Here are some interesting stats on how many penalties each shark player committed/drew/served in the 2025-2026 season, in total counts, relative to each other, and normalized.
Committed: did the action (ex: tripped someone)
Drawn: victim of action (ex: got tripped)
Served: player chosen to serve bench penalties (ex: too many men, unsuccessful coach's challenge), or other types where the original guy can't serve it (ex: goalie leaving the crease, major fighting, etc), but may not have actually done anything
The normalized version allows us to fairly compare players with wildly different ice times or games played. Like Mack having twice as much average TOI as Gauds or playing 82 games versus Cardwell playing 7.
Thanks to @bluishfrog for explaining to me how to normalize! Math-wise, it's total times the player did the thing / (player's average ice time * how many games they played this season).

Yeah I could have defined that better (just updated the post for it as well). The three types categorized are:
Committed: did the action (ex: tripped someone)
Drawn: victim of action (ex: got tripped)
Served: player chosen to serve bench penalties (ex: too many men, unsuccessful coach's challenge), or other types where the original guy can't serve it (ex: goalie leaving the crease, major fighting, etc), but may not have actually done anything
So, for Mack not "serving" any, that means he never served on behalf of someone else or some situation that could call for it.

Stupid question, why would you have someone like smith take a penalty? I don't get it, I would think you'd put a less good player ? Not your no2 guy?
It's definitely a strategic move and I vaguely remember that Warso has talked about it in interviews before, like about intentionally choosing Will and why.
Coaches will usually choose a player who is weaker defensively (since they are unlikely to be needed in the penalty kill) and stronger offensively (since they have a better chance of a break-away)
