OP: my granddaughter loves martial arts and the jianghu (wuxia world), so I craft many sets of Hanfu in wuxia style for her. (cr čåæ)
highly recommend wearing your Edwardian underthings to the beach to feel like a seaside muse at the turn of the century
Hello! I made a dress from scratch for the Renaissance Faire. It took me six months to make the chemise, hoop skirt, under skirt, over skirts, French knot embroidered bodice, crown and jewelry. I am very excited to wear it this year despite how serious I look in the photos!
Edit: still a work in progress! I will post a final video once I finish it!!
Witches' Follies~~ Look for Saturday! Heavily historical inspired coord for this event! I have handmade this look. Also it says on the ribbon "head of staff" as I was the volunteer manager. And the lil' flower corsage was made byĀ violetharlequin

so, I saw this post yesterday
The tailors at Colonial Williamsburg made a suit for their cat
which means I obviously got immediately obsessed with it, and being in possession of a puss and some 18th century sewing skills, most obviously had to perpetuate the mischief for myself. and so, without further ado, have a little 18th century lady in quilted jumps:
Has anyone tagged @vincentbriggs in this? I'm not seeing it in the notes.
Aww, no I hadn't seen this, thank you for tagging me! She looks ready for a busy day of selling vegetables at the market!
(also I must once again add that I made a slight error in my original addition to that post - it wasn't a diary entry, the event happened when the kid was 12 but he wrote that account of it in a memoir a bit later in his life.)
I showed this to my friend, the master tailor at Colonial Williamsburg, and he said "I'm glad we've inspired the torture of cats around the world."

Heads up if you're a sewing hobbyist...
Buy those patterns you've been thinking about while you still can.
The legacy sewing pattern brands Simplicity, Butterick, McCalls, and Vogue, commonly referred to as the Big 4, have been sold to a liquidato
SIXTEENTH-CENTURY BASQUE WHALER'S CAP
Are you from the 16th century? Are you a whaler? Are you a Basque whaler? Yeah, me neither. But would you like to look like one?
Saw this post. Thought, I want that hat. Made it. Wrote the pattern. Bon appetit.

@surikane and I had a joint medievalcore birthday party this year ! I made this little jester costume very loosely based on various 15th century illustrations, with some appliquƩs and quilting that are not quite of the period.... We chose the colours based on the heraldry of our hometowns. The little boar bell is for the eastern zodiac sign we share.
Here it is from mockup to party !

@1kittynoir1 replied to your post:
What did it get used for? š
It's not done yet, but it's the facing, collar, and cuffs for the patchwork dressing gown I'm working on! It was less than half a metre of silk/rayon velvet that I dyed in college because the sample we did of that colour was so nice I wanted a bigger piece. (It was PRO MX fibre reactive dye in the colour Marine, and I don't have my dye sample book with me right now but I think it was at 4%. It shows up more green on some fibres and more blue on others, but is always gorgeous.)
I had no specific plans for it at the time, but eventually the perfect project came along, and there was just enough!
I've been working on this thing (intermittently, in short busts) for a few years now, and am finally done the patchwork and on to the construction. I've posted occasional updates on @vincentbriggs and will post photos there when I'm done.
I've also been filming the whole process, so I'll have a video about it up on my youtube channel eventually, but that'll be a while after it's finished because I have so so so many clips and it's going to take a horrifyingly large amount of editing.
It's based on this c. 1835 original, which is a good 50-100 years later than what I usually sew, but I like it and I wanted one.
If anyone's wondering how many triangles mine has, it's 6,957.
Since I've got the time consuming part out of the way I'm hoping I can get the construction done before winter officially ends.
Edit: Why does everyone think I had a bad time working on the triangles?? I loved working on them, it was so satisfying to put lots of little bits of colour together. The reason I worked on it intermittently is because I could not put it down once I got working on it, and would work on it all day for several days straight until I was very tired and sore, and then I had to put it away to stop myself, and then I'd forget about it for a few months.
Also, they're machine sewn. Most of the actual garment construction will be by hand, but the patchwork is all by machine.
I finished my dressing gown.
And besides the velvet, it of course used up a lot of other little bits of fabric!
(Once again, my sewing and other non-dinosaur works are mainly posted on @vincentbriggs)
Video finished :)
It's an hour and 13 minutes long and I say 11,785 words in it.
i want to build up my skill set to one day be able to make something like this!!!! #op this is 1) absolutely gorgeous & 2) so much helpful information! thank u for sharing š„° #all the shots of twirling in the finished garment made me so so happy i got a little teary-eyed??? #āit looks very nice. it reminds me of ā you know when people have extra nipples?ā #absolutely Took Me Out i hollered #like that comment toward the end of such an earnest video? so unexpected. so fucking hilarious
Thank you!! Good luck on your sewing! And I'm glad my Very Correct nipple observations were appreciated
This post is getting notes again, and I just wanna add some pictures of other things I've made videos of.
Stripey painted leather gloves.
Velvet mite brooch.
Leaf for head.
Leaf for torso, a leaf sequel, now with added slime mould beading.
Very very long and detailed shirt tutorial, which I also did a written version of. You should make one, it's all rectangles.
and Normal Fabric Waistcoat.
I am very slow at making youtube videos but I post monthly updates on the video stuff I've been working on over on patreon, along with 4 extra dinosaurs a month. (and aaghh I know I've been really really sparse with the dinosaurs here lately, I'm sorry!! It's not intentional, there are just a lot of other things to do and also it's been over 9 years and every year I get a little more tired of drawing dinosaurs!)
Right now I'm editing a video for a thing I finished sewing almost 2 months ago, and it's not even one of my longer videos, I've just been doing other things and stuff.
I turned 20 today š havenāt posted any of my sewing here yet but Iām a historical costumer!
I made the bonnet, dress, and reticule. The necklace and earrings are vintage and were the closest things I had in my wardrobe for regency jewelry lol..
Also I know the shoes and fan arenāt 100% historically accurate but yesterday I wore my only pair of long white socks I use for historical costuming so. Yeah
The shoes I borrowed from my sibling š
This weekend was Balticon 59 and I entered my second ever Masquerade. The field of competitors was fierceand I entered as a journeyman.
My entry was the Spite Ensemble I've been working on. I titled it "In Memory of Black Suffragettes".
The script I had for the moderator to read as I modeled:
On August 19, 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified, stating āThe right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.ā
That should have meant that ALL women had the right to vote, but in reality, Black women, who had long been part of the suffrage movement, and Indigenous women, who inspired it, were once again left behind by their white peers.
Even now, protections once offered by enforcement of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 have been rolled back and we are hurtling backwards to a time where literacy tests and poll taxes kept all but ārespectableā people from casting their ballots.
This ensemble was made with turn of the century patterns and an Ankara print the style of would have been available at the time. White was chosen to emulate the outfits worn by Suffragettes of all backgrounds.
After literal hours of deliberation the judges made their decision: I was named Best in Class Journeyman for Presentation and Best in Class _*Master*_ for Workmanship! Usually you have to win 3 awards as Journeyman to move up to Master
All in all, Balticon was a blast and I'm already planning next year's entry. Maybe a big fantasy ball gown...
The ehlers danlos syndrome person to historical costumer pipeline is or will be a thing and I shall explain why.
At some point one discovers that some sort of supportive structure around your torso feels incredibly comfortable and gives your tired muscles a rest. Whatās the coolest and most non obtrusive torso bracing garment? A corset. Believe me when I say that when your torso has the structural integrity of a wet sack of jello, a tightly laced corset makes you feel like a god.
And because historical corsets tend to be more comfortable and are usually made with regular wear in mind, they are the natural choice.
Then you have the shoes. What shoes is someone with unstable ankles supposed to wear, you ask?Lace up boots, for stability. And due to their middle of the heel heel placement, historical lace up boots tend to be way more comfortable than the modern variety.Even the non healed ones, really. Couple that with the fact that Edwardian and Victorian boots are really really prettyā¦
And after the boots and the corset, itās a very slippery slope.
Pretty soon youāll be wondering how to hide your corset under your clothes for when an outer corset is not the vibe, and youāll be buying yourself a corset cover. Or making one yourself. Theyāre a great starter project. But that looks weird with a fitted top so cool flowy blouse it is.
Then you realize wearing this with a skirt makes you feel intensely powerful but you donāt want to keep tripping over it so you add petticoats.
And then you realize your neck isnāt so great at holding up your head so you really need to find a hairstyle where your hair sits on top of your head instead of to the sides or to the back so that itās balanced and you donāt get a neck ache. A high bun it is. Not too tightly, because your scalp is sensitive, but a high bun still works if you bobby-pin it in place.
And then one day, you look in the mirror and youāre dressed like Anne of Green Gables.
And youāve never looked cooler.
Area dumbass when her corset cover prevents the hard line at the top of her corset from showing through her summer blouse; AKA its literal purpose:
